There are some general rules that you can apply when using the comma.
However, you will find that in English there are many other ways to use the
comma to add to the meaning of a sentence or to emphasise an item, point or
meaning.
You must use a comma when writing a list. The comma separates the items in the list.
e.g. The meal consisted of soup, fish, chicken, dessert and coffee.
You should use a comma when adding extra details to your sentences.
e.g. China has a huge population.
China, which is one of the most powerful nations on earth,
has a huge population.
Here we have added extra detail to the sentence with the use of the comma.
If the extra detail comes at the end of the sentence, its final
comma is replaced with a full stop.
e.g. We arrived at HACA, one of the best schools in Yorkshire.
This makes
complete
sense on its
own.

Year 10 Task
Look at the passage below. Insert commas in the correct places.
Starting year 10 has been amazing so far. I’ve found myself in Team Prior and there are
some lovely tutors! There’s Mrs Penn Ms Richardson Miss Yeadon Mr Melton Mr Booker
and many more. You have to get things right especially basic expectations. Bringing a
pen pencil ruler and your planner every day will get you in your tutor’s good books.
Uniform is also important in Team Prior; black trousers black shoes and your tie worn in
the correct way is essential. Chinos which are currently in fashion are certainly a big no!
Don’t even try to wear canvas shoes the ones like pumps you will get a detention.
