October 7, 2014, Gamma Upsilon Program Planning Update Meeting October 11, 2014, Gamma Upsilon partnered with Inner City Night for their 1st Annual Walk for Homelessness October 15, 2014, Gamma Upsilon Pillow Talk Program October 19, 2014, Gamma Upsilon Chapter Meeting October 20, 2014, Gamma Upsilon donated back packs to Myers Middle School October 25, 2014, Gamma Upsilon Think Green Scavenger Hunt Program October 29, 2014, Gamma Upsilon Self Defense – Earn Your Pink Belt Program PROGRAM INITIATIVES II. HEALTH INITIATIVE: None. B. Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability: On October 25, 2014, a Think Green Scavenger Hunt was held by members of Gamma Upsilon in partnership with the Environmental Science Club of Savannah State University. There were over 45 students to attend this program where clues were placed strategically on buildings around the Circle of Savannah State Campus. These clues were given to 9 teams teaching them on how to become more environmentally friendly and more knowledgeable of how we can Think Green and help to save our planet earth. 5 Zaxb’s Gift Cards were awarded to the team who had the highest number of correct answers. III. GLOBAL PROVERTY: On October 6, 2014, Gamma Upsilon members served dinner at Old Savannah City Mission. IV. ECONOMIC SECURITY INITIATIVE None. V. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS INITIATIVE: On October 11, 2014, the following Sorors of Gamma Sigma participated on behalf of Gamma Upsilon since they were on their Fall Break for Inner City Night Shelters 1st Annual Walk for Homelessness: Soror Mary Coleman, Soror Sharon Watson, Soror LaTonya Thompson, Soror Terri Lewis and Soror Dorothy Wilson. Kudos to those Sorors for stepping in! On October 17, 2014, members of Gamma Upsilon participated in facilitating the Bingo Games at the Senior Citizens Complex in Thunderbolt. Kudos to Soror Dorothy B. Wilson for attending this program event with the Sorors of Gamma Upsilon. On October 28, 2014, Gamma Upsilon hosted an Earn Your Pink Belt Self Defense Class on Savannah State University’s campus in honor of Domestic Violence Prevention. VI. INTERNAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR EXTERNAL SERVICE INITIATIVE: On October 19, 2014, Soror Dorothy B. Wilson talked to the Sorors of Gamma Upsilon on the importance of having their documents with them at their Chapter Meetings and all other Alpha Kappa Alpha meetings. Two (2) Sorors were acknowledged and awarded gifts for having all of their documents with them. New Target Programs: 1. Educational Enrichment Target: A. One million backpacks – Gamma Upsilon donated 31 backpacks to Myers Middle School. To date, Gamma Upsilon has donated 43 backpacks. B. Pillow Talk – On October 16, 2014, Gamma Upsilon hosted a workshop that was opened to the woman of Savannah State University. Questions were posed by those in attendance regarding issues that college age women face on campus and in the community. Can goods were given in support in conjunction with the Child Hunger Awareness which is listed under the Family Strengthening Target. The can goods will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank during the Thanksgiving Season. C. THINK HBCU – On October 19, 2014, Gamma Upsilon participated in THINK HBCU by wearing Savannah State University paraphernalia and donating $72.00 to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in care of Savannah State University. SISTERLY ACTIVITY: None. Upcoming Activities: Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will host the first ever “Anti-Hazing Awareness Week” at Savannah State University, Monday, November 3 through Friday, November 7, 2014. These events are free and open to the public. The purpose of the “Anti-Hazing Awareness Week” is to acknowledge the impact hazing has on everyone, not just those within the Greek community.
