Occasion/Position Topic Sentences
• An Occasion/Position Statement uses a sentence structure called a complex
sentence with an adverbial clause.
• Think of Occasion/Position Statements as sentences with two parts. The
occasion gives your reason for writing. The position shows what you plan to
prove or explain.
• Occasion/Position Statements start with words from a special list of words
called subordinating conjunctions—the starter words.
