Thanks for all of your support over the summer months. You answered the call to service on several occasions. We must now look ahead as we plan for a very busy year. We had an awesome Southwest Regional Conference in Fort Worth and are now energized to do bigger and better things in the name of Delta Sigma Theta. Once again, NDSA was recognized for the many programs and activities done over the past Sorority year. We received several awards and certificates of recognition. Kudos to Soror Demia Dupuch who led the Decorations Committee for the Social Action Luncheon and Soror Tracey Harris who led the After Glow event after the closing banquet. And to the many, many Sorors who work with them to make these projects part of the success of the conference. Our National President, Soror Cynthia ButlerMcIntyre is challenging us with a full platform of National Programs and Current Initiatives. This is a challenge that I know NDSA will do well; as we have done in the past. Sorors, I look forward to working with each of you and know that you will step up to answer the call to serve. chapter programs and activities. We are excited to look forward to our first Wingtip and Stiletto Strut event on October 10th which is being planned with you in mind. And we are thrilled to be hosting our bi-annual Jabberwock program in December and working with the young ladies as they receive scholarships for higher education. My vision for NDSA is that we make a greater impact through strategic program implementation with a viable effect to the community. Harris The Award Winning Committee — Committed to Servant Leadership My Sorors The Membership Services Committee started the new year hosting the New Member Orientation and Regional Preparation session held on July 18th and we have not stopped since! Over the summer, chapter members attended the 42nd Regional Conference (August 13– 16, 2009) in great numbers and were energized to continue with work of Delta on the local level. We reconnected with old friends and line sisters and bonded as a chapter at various events including our chapter dinner held at Risckys in Sundance Square on Friday, August 14th. The highlight of the conference occurred for me when the chapter was acknowledged for its reclamation activities! As I have said before, “everyone is a member of Membership Services,” and we ALL should be proud of the work we have done to reclaim and retain Sorors! We reclaimed 30 Sorors in the 2008-2009 Sorority Year, and we are well on the way to reclaiming even more Sorors in 20092010. Our time together this summer continued as many of us participated in the Chapter’s Leadership retreat on August 22nd and a special thanks to the committee chairs for meeting during the summer months to make sure we have a great Sorority year. Our final activity of the summer was our chapter retreat! Kudos to all of the presenters — Sorors Carolyn Matthews, Jennifer Stimpson, Rev. Ouida Lee, Tiffany O’Banner, and a special thanks to Soror Whitney Breaux who did not get a chance to be present but put together a great presentation which will be distributed at the September Chapter meeting. At the retreat we learned our coping styles (Are you a red, green or blue?) This is a great tool to remember when we are working in committees. Additionally, our sister, Rev. Ouida Lee blessed our hearts with a sincere message and challenged us all to take the journey within! Soror Lee’s message was a wonderful segue into our discussion on Sisterhood. I wish we would have video taped the responses and thank you Soror Stimpson for facilitating both the Coping Styles and Sisterhood segments. Another highlight of the retreat was our Strut time! We needed a videotape for this segment too! Lastly, thanks to the committee chairs for presenting memorable and entertaining committee commercials and for a great Membership Services committee! All of your hard work and efforts paid off in the communities we serve. Now our vacation is over and it is time to prepare our hearts and minds for our 2009-2010 Sorority year. It’s that time again to GET WITH THE PROGRAMS. After attending our informative Regional Conference, our enthralled Chapter Leadership Retreat and our heart warming Chapter Retreat, we can’t help but be invigorated, anxious, excited and eager to do the business of Delta. This year our Focused, Organized, Resilient and Energized sorors have been tasked to include some additional National Initiatives to support our communities better. They include the following programs: ∆ Financial Fortitude will be continued by Empowering Communities Economically, through the Delta Homeownership Initiative and Entrepreneurship. ∆ PEACE- a Parent Empowered Active in Children Education ∆ EMBODI – Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence which will address the plight of the African-American male ∆ Delta will strategically impact the plight of people in Africa through International awareness and involvement. ∆ Healthy Lifestyles for the Family: Preserving the Mind, Body and Spirit, focusing on raising awareness on chronic illnesses in African American families, Implementing a Weight and Nutrition Challenge and to elevate awareness of mental health disorders that African American families face. Many of these programs will be combined with some of our existing programs to make sure we are able to support the direction of our National president and the changes that are taking place in the community. All committee chairs are asked to please meet with your committees and plan your yearly calendar. I am very pleased to see the efforts of many of our committees and the fast start you have taken. Please plan to support the upcoming kickoffs of Delta Academy, RAFT and Project ESI and to immediately sign up for Race for the Cure under the leadership of our Physical and Mental Health Committee. Volunteer opportunities are available for each of us to support the Women’s Museum at the State Fair of Texas. A sign up sheet is located in the back of the room, if you are available to support this activity. Please be reminded that the President and I are asking each member to please signup for a minimum of two committees. The signup sheets are at the back tables. PAGE 7 PAGE NDSA IN ACTION Willie B. Johnson Recreation Center impacted by City of Dallas budget cuts! Soror, on Tuesday, September 1, 2009, several of the chapter members attended a 2nd Town Hall meeting at Aikin Elementary School. This was a much smaller audience than the 1st Town Hall meeting. We were informed at this meeting that Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert is looking into more funds to support additional hours at the recreation centers. On Friday, September 4, 2009, along with Thomas Jefferson, Hamilton Park Civic League President, I met with Councilman Jerry Allen. During this meeting, we came up with an option to include Willie B Johnson to stay open late on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday. This option will be submitted and will have to be approved by city-council. The proposed budget is scheduled to be adopted on September 23rd; however, they may vote a week earlier on September 16th. Over the weekend, Dallas Morning News reported that a new amendment to the budget will spare some of the cuts for recreation centers and libraries. The plan is to increase the fees at these centers to restore the hours. At this time, I do not know what the additional fees are or how it will impact NDSA. Hamilton Park Community Leaders with NDSA Sorors This amendment is based on the input from the town hall meetings. Sorors, thanks again for attending these meetings. Our presence made a difference!
