Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. Introduction: The students were assigned to read through chapter two in the book The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. They were supposed to write out three questions or comments and to underline words they do not understand as they read. Objectives: The students will be able to understand the basic plot, identify the characters and define new vocabulary terms from the first two chapters. They should be able to work in groups, focusing on certain topics and themes thus far in the book. Lesson: Write on the board “What would you do if you were in the position of Katniss when her sister was submitted to the Capitol? And why would you make this decision?” •
Have the students journal about this for 5-‐7 minutes We will gather back together as a class and begin to dive into the book. I will ask the students to pull out their questions they wrote the night before. I will then ask students to share some of the questions they had from the book. (Write down questions/comments/new vocabulary for 10 minutes in a brainstorming fashion). •

I will write their questions up on the board so everyone can see them. I will also walk around and check to make sure everyone wrote questions for a completion grade. I will also ask that they share their vocabulary words that they underlined. I will make a list on the board for them to also copy down. We will have a class discussion about the questions on the board. (15-‐20 minutes) •

I will get a feel for who is struggling with the book, with the plot, with the language, or any other issues they are having with the book. We will answer and discuss each question on the board, and I will probe more questions to keep the discussion going. I will also try to try the beginning pre-‐writing activity into the discussion by talking of what each student would have done in Katniss position. Wrap-‐up with the homework for tomorrow •
Read chapters 3-‐6. Underline any new vocabulary words. Also, look-‐up the vocabulary words that we listed in class to compile a list of new vocabulary from The Hunger Games. For the rest of the class time students may: 1. Begin their reading for homework in The Hunger Games 2. Read a book from the class library 3. Begin to look up the new vocabulary with the classroom dictionary
