This gesture survives as today’s hand salute, which is the traditional greeting among soldiers of all nations. UNCLASSIFIED SALUTING Individuals entitled to a salute: • Officers senior to you in any service or friendly foreign government • Appointed and elected officials • Foreign government officials • Note: Medal of Honor recipients may be saluted, but not required. Do not interrupt until recognized. • Salute and hold the salute until it is returned or acknowledged. • Report “Good morning, Sir or Ma’am,” state your rank and name, and reporting as ordered. • When you receive the command “dismissed,” say “aye, aye, Sir/Ma’am,” take one step back, salute and give proper greeting of the day, then execute an about face. UNCLASSIFIED REPORTING TO AN OFFICER INDOORS • Center yourself six inches from the front of the officer’s desk. • If under arms, render a salute. Under arms means that you are neither armed with a weapon, or are wearing a duty belt. • Report in the same manner as outdoors. When not under arms, you will follow the same procedure except you will not salute.
