FRANK BORMAN:

Well, I’ve always loved to fly since when I was 15. I flew with my father when I was very young, as a passenger in an open cockpit bi-plane, Waco. And then, when I was in high school, I worked several jobs to get enough money to learn to fly.

Flying in NASA was a job and I enjoyed and it was a thrill. But, for some reason, flying this little airplane I get just as great a thrill.

The sense of freedom that you have is really remarkable. It’s a wonderful time for reflection.

SUSAN BORMAN: Frank won’t talk about Apollo 8. I’m the one who tells the story.

He’s scared to death; I think that people are going to think he’s bragging. Well, I am bragging.

FRANK BORMAN: She has a kind of an idealized story about Apollo 8. So, I’ll tell you t he truth later on. (to Susan) You’re my buddy.

I’ve been very fortunate because Susan was 15 years when I had my first date with her.

And I have been in love with her and mesmerized by her ever since. And she’s just been a tremendous support system.

Marrying Susan was the most fortunate thing that ever happened to me.

SUSAN BORMAN: I really didn’t worry about Frank on all of his missions, because he knew exactly what he was doing.

FRANK BORMAN: Well, when I was flying in NASA and the Air Force, I understood the risk. And I always felt that I had a great handle on the risk. You know, I honestly thought that I could handle anything that came my way. I knew that wasn’t true but, maybe every pilot feels that way.

I’ve finally decided that we probably won’t live forever. And having people that are

Financial Advisors that you trust is extremely important to me.

FA, CRAIG ANDERSON: He defines to me what a patriot is. His whole focus early on in his years was to beat the Russians to the moon. He’s got a focus about philanthropy.

It’s not about him. It’s about helping others. He had a real focus of saying, if something happens to Susan and I, I don’t want a big mess for my kids. So, it’s never about him.

Isn’t that amazing?

FRANK BORMAN: We went from NASA to Eastern Airlines in Miami. We were down there for 16 years.

Selling it was not a very popular thing to do. But, you get to the point where you have to do something for the shareholders.

After we left Eastern Airlines… Eastern was sold. We came to Las Cruces and started a little business with a friend restoring old airplanes… and we ah, mostly old World War

II airplanes.

Making money wasn’t the focus of our lives. It really wasn’t. I know some people, that are wonderful peo ple, that was the biggest deal in their life. That’s how they keep score, am I making more money… I can honestly tell you, I never even thought about that and

(turning to Susan) you, you didn’t give a damn, about how much money we made. That was just the way it was.

FRANK BORMAN: Bill Anders took that picture of the EarthRise. It’s such a peaceful planet. And ah, everything that was dear to us was back there, not with us. It made me appreciate this country and this globe.

This country is the pedestal for freedom. And, i n the final analysis, that’s the most important possession humans can have is their freedom. That’s one of the things I enjoy flying around here, because it’s absolute freedom.
