FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NEWS 500190 • Volume 7 • Number 49 • October 7, 2011 NEED A MUSICAL HUG? There will be plenty of “musical hugs” to go around at the Hugworks Family Concert following the Children’s Sabbath Worship Service on October 16. Hugworks is a nonprofit organization that has pursued its mission of “bringing the healing power of music to kids everywhere.” For over 30 years, Jim Newton (Founder and President) and Paul Hill (Executive Producer) have been sharing their messages of healing and hope to hospitalized children and their families through live therapeutic music entertainment. These sessions have been shared throughout DFW area hospitals and the world. In fact, during a recent stay at a local hospital, our own John Gorman received a visit from Jim and Paul. According to John’s mother, April, “Jim and Paul. . . played the most beautiful song, it was the highlight of our stay. John was unable to see at this point and it was obvious that he found much comfort in the music.” The Hugworks songs repertoire is comprised primarily of original songs which address themes like encouragement, self-esteem, diversity, relaxation and fun. These are themes that are relevant and meaningful regardless of one’s age, so everyone is invited to hear Jim and Paul share both their music and their inspirational story. Please plan to join us for the Hugworks Family Concert in the Presbyterian Activity Center at 1:00 on October 16. There’s sure to be a “musical hug” there for you! For more information, contact Miatta Wilson or Larry Dykstra, or visit www.hugworks.org. CONTEMPLATIVE WORSHIP @ FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH TAIZÉ SERVICE ON OCTOBER 16 Through days of exhausting schedules, multiple responsibilities and critical decisions, come find a place of quiet rest, a setting for worship that will refill and revitalize. Contemplative worship is offered not to replace morning worship but to offer spiritual refreshment in a still, reflective and meditative environment. Contemplative worship is a setting in which we quiet ourselves in order to open our souls to the ministry of God within and is one way to hear the voice of God with our hearts. Amidst the busyness, join us to find a rhythm of moving into prayer and communion with God before going out to engage the world in meaningful ministry. Contemplative worship does not imply that a person must be proficient in a certain skill or discipline to participate. It simply implies a desire to seek God and to be open to however God might choose to move within our lives. Join us for the first in the FPC Contemplative Worship Series, Sunday, October 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel for a service in the manner of the Taizé community. Guided tours of FPC’s new labyrinth with be offered beginning at 6:30. CHILDREN’S CHOIR NOTES GRACE PRESBYTERIAN VILLAGE ANNUAL CRAFT FAIR & BAZAAR by Rita Johnson Fall is in the air! The holidays are upon us, and it’s time for the annual Craft Fair and Bazaar at Grace Presbyterian Village. Mark your calendar for Friday and Saturday, October 21-22, from 10:00 am to 3:00 p.m. Handmade crafts, homemade baked items, a quilt raffle and many other festive fall and holiday items will be for sale. A navy patchwork quilt, made by the Friends of Grace Craft Volunteers, will be raffled at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each or 6 for $5 and are available from any PW Circle or can be purchased at the bazaar. If you would like to contribute baked goods or crafts, they will begin accepting donations on Thursday morning, October 20, at 550 E. Ann Arbor in Dallas. Baked goods should be wrapped and labeled as to contents. You may also leave baked items at the church with Brenda Roberts or craft items in bags marked for the Village Bazaar by the Presbyterian Women’s mailbox. They also need volunteers to work during the craft sale. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mary Bodien at 214-413-4059, and she will give you a time that fits best with your schedule. Lots of people work hard each year to help make this a success for the Village. All proceeds from the volunteer-sponsored event benefit the Caring Fund at Grace, which allows them to continue to provide, on a confidential basis, exceptional services to many residents even though their financial resources have been depleted. Thanks so much for helping to support this ministry. Take a friend with you and shop for that special someone on your list this year. Hope to see you there. For any questions, please call Rita Johnson at 972-412-1371. The children’s choirs are off to a great start this year. I want to especially thank Will Christie for leading the recreation time and our director of children’s ministries, Miatta Wilson, for leading the enrichment hour with the carol choir. The carol choir is a fun group of kids that is always ready for a challenge. They are doing a great job of learning how to read a musical score and following the director. Chorister choir is a group of old pros. I am always impressed at their music reading abilities and readiness for new ideas. Children’s Sabbath is fast approaching on October 16 when our children’s choirs will sing in worship for the first time this year. Also, stay tuned for another musical offering from the carol choir on October 30. NEW BEGINNINGS CONCERT SERIES KICKS OFF OCTOBER 22 “Encountering Satan: Why the Music Industry Hates God” is the title of the First Concert Series inaugural event. This provocative title is exactly what Dr. Thomas Sovik, Professor of Music History at the University of North Texas, will discuss during this unique event! He will take a look at the influence of popular music on individual theology. “Jesus is Just All Right with Me,” “Goin’ Up to the Spirit in the Sky,” etc., all influence each generation’s vision of Christ and understanding of the Gospel. Dr. Sovik, who attended seminary prior to becoming a respected music historian, takes a closer look at the theology of the music industry and how it affects each of us. Of course, the appropriate “rocking out” music will be provided by the Knuckleheads! Join us in the Presbyterian Activity Center (fourth floor) for hors d’oeuvres, a rock concert and Dr. Sovik’s “old-time” revival presentation at 7:00 p.m. on October 22. SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS REPORTS Marguerite Mizell 21st Century Disciples by Marilynn McKnight Today, the first Sunday in October, was Wanda Shipman’s birthday and the 6th is Billie Adrian’s. Neither was present to be sung to. Allen Shipman’s birthday is next Sunday, and President Jeanne Werner’s on the 28th. She presided and Diana Briner led us in prayer. Diana also brought a delicious spicy brown bread (her famous pumpkin?) and grapes. Our opening hymn was “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less” and LoRita’s offertory was “Trust and Obey.” Louise Storm was home preparing breakfast for her Aggie relatives/ house guests. (Do they eat more as winners or losers?) David Johns was at a craft show, and Jody Morgan at a daughter’s birthday at the farm. Bob Holmes is on his way to the coast for his annual fall “escape the allergens” and fishing getaway. We were all shocked to hear of the automobile accident the Echols were involved in last weekend on their way to Arkadelphia. We give thanks to God for their miraculously light injuries. Jane will begin therapy Monday for her shoulder so she can continue to make music. Our returning visitor was Jeanne’s brother, John Elder. Thanks to the Quances and Brenda for last Sunday’s good lunch. Ruth is open to suggestions for good eating spots. Our teacher, Dave Humphry, concluded the segment in Proverbs by covering the lesson for September 25, “Wisdom and Discernment” and the lesson for October 2, “An Ordered Life”. Our take-home verse: “One who trusts in the Lord is secure.” By Hank Hunt Catherine Foster continued her presentations concerning the influence of the Religious Right on U.S. foreign policy in relation to Israel. Today’s focus was twofold: (1) The current U.N. debate over Palestinian statehood; (2) The role of our church in the founding of Dallas Theological Seminary. Regarding statehood, she reviewed the history between Israel and the Palestinians from the establishment of Israel’s statehood by the U.N. in 1948. Following the Arab-Israeli war, the principles of the original agreement have never been honored. With the support of the Religious Right, Russian Jews have and others have settled in Palestinian territory. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have displaced. Many more have been forced to live in poverty and crowded conditions. The U.S. government has consistently supported Israel which views the current Palestinian governmental authority as a terrorist organization and Palestinian statehood as a threat to Israel’s security. Nations comprising 75% of the world’s populations favor statehood for the Palestinians. Essentially, the United States and the United Kingdom with its territories comprise the opposition on this issue. Catherine then shifted to the history of the 1924 founding of DTS under the leadership of our former pastor, William Anderson, Jr. DTS is now a major training center for a theology that promotes Israel’s restoration as a nation is the precursor for the “rapture” and the return of Christ. Next week, Catherine will conclude her presentations with a focus on the Religious Right and the administration of George W. Bush. Kairos by Jim Carvell Mark your calendars for fun, food, fellowship and games at Justin’s house on October 22 (Evite to follow). Thanks be to God for a good medical report on Bryce’s mom. We continued our series on “original sin” with Gage Waggoner. Justin, Fred, Rachel, Kristin L., Ryan, Andrea, Ben, Bryce, Becca, Nell and Jim were joined by visitor Rev. “Smitty.” And former member Devyn, in town from Florida, brought two-year-old Ellis by to say hello. We continued our study of sin and Genesis with Chapter 3. “Now the Serpent . . .” chilling words as he began to question Eve. Interesting questions for us: How did Adam (and Eve) know what it meant to disobey? or to die? and why did there have to be sin? This vignette begins the theme of disobedience repeated throughout the OT. Hope and redemption come only with a changed heart. In the NT Christ said that you must be born again (have a changed heart). But what happened to require a changed heart? Come next week to learn. The Kairos class meets each Sunday in room 205 at 9:45 am and visitors are always welcome. Allman by Margaret Teat Today is birthday Sunday, and Amy Horby brought refreshments, as her birthday is the 3rd and we could all be there to celebrate with her. Helen Warden’s is the 9th and I believe she said she’ll be 90! Charles Cone’s is on the 24th. He grew up along with John Anderson and Harry Crissman in this church and has stories to tell from their teenage days together. He’s the only one out of the three who remains alive today. Our teacher, Chuck Hudson, told us about his grandmother who would have been 113 today and about the land they settled and how their ancestors have built on the original property over the years. Promila Almas spoke of her sister-in-law, who’s improving in India, and thanked us for the prayers. Evelyn Osborn’s grandson was visiting and did lots of work around her house. Our opening hymn was “Where He Leads Me” and Chuck brought the opening prayer. During our prayer for the offering, Eleanor Otto and Mary Jane Ogden will play a beautiful duet on the piano. We are blessed with these two. Our lesson was on Proverbs 29. Chuck spoke how Proverbs seems out of order at times and explained what Jack Miller used to say: it’s as though someone was carrying them and dropped them, and while picking up they became jumbled together. The subject can change at every verse. Our prayers and thanks are with you, Chuck. We had 18 present today. Foster Open Ring by Liz Lawless Proverbs 29:1-8, 26-27; 31:23-31 1. Righteous leadership brings joy to a nation. Proverbs compares good and evil. Israel was united under Saul, David and Solomon. When kingdom broke up, 7 good kings and 27 evil kings. Often killed in office by successor. Two hundred years with no righteous kingdom. Solomon had a revelation or good insight. David the greatest king even with sin because he repented. Psalm 51. 2. Wisdom in a child makes a family glad. To be wise means power of discernment, prudent, judicious and scholarly. Solomon thought children could be taught wisdom but also occurs through experience. 3. Justice brings stability to a nation. Four rules of ethics. Duty to respect persons. Duty to do no harm. Duty to promote justice (fairness); distributive and retributive. Practice kindness without reward. 4. Righteousness makes the poor visible. Poor often invisible. FPC sees poor and responds. Righteous man knows the rights of the poor. Worst poverty in decades in U.S. Children starving. Wicked care only for self. We are not confused about God’s call. From the Lord a person gets justice. Faithful to serving God. FPC established first orphanage in 1903 as we heard today. 5. Good wives are worthy of respect and praise. Astonishing that Solomon ends Proverbs with this praise during a time when women had little respect. Strong, dignified, works hard, children and husband bless, she laughs at future because she is dependent on God. Sing and keep going. Proverbs tell us how to live life in service to God. SANCTUARY FLOWERS ADD VISUAL MEANING TO WORSHIP Flowers and plants are used as a way of celebrating God’s gift of the creation of natural beauty. In remembrance of this gift, the natural beauty of flowers and plants used in our sanctuary magnify the beauty of worship and celebration. Traditionally, members purchase flowers and plants throughout the year that honor special persons, loved ones, events, or to remember loved ones who have passed away. After each service, flowers are gathered by volunteers for distribution to shut-ins and those of our congregation who are hospitalized.
