Mission Statement
Greater Cleveland Community Shares supports social
justice organizations through workplace giving programs
and other philanthropic initiatives.
Founded in 1984, Community Shares is the nation’s second largest workplace giving federation
and Cleveland’s only fund dedicated to social justice. Our purpose is to advance social justice by
providing our member organizations with a growing source of operating income through workplace
campaigns. Our governing board is comprised of leaders from our member organizations as well as
from the community.
Together, Community Shares, our member organizations, and our donors make a difference.
Together, we work to implement solutions to community problems, with the goal of creating
long-term, systemic change.

From the President, Board of Directors
Once again, Shares raised more money than ever for the social
justice organizations it supports—an extraordinary accomplishment
in the context of Northeastern Ohio’s current economic situation.
Jacquie Talbott, our executive director, continues to build wonderfully
on Shares’ pioneering history, working with her staff to improve the
campaign, strengthen internal controls, and make operations transparent to donors and member organizations alike. An unusually effective
strategic planning process revealed a very strong consensus in support
of Shares’ crucial fundraising mission. Foundations supported Shares’
efforts more generously than ever. Most importantly, as this Annual
Report and literally hundreds of articles in the local, national, and international press have
documented, Shares’ member organizations are doing much to solve fundamental problems, not
only for thousands of individuals, but for this region as a whole.
—David C. Hammack
There’s Power in Participation… Power to Shape Change
Community Shares is a collaboration of 37 progressive organizations working for real change.
Shares provides an easy way for people to support the social justice missions of our members
through gifts at work.
From the Executive Director
There is power in coming together. This wonderful collaboration we call
“Community Shares” provides the avenue for Cleveland’s workforce to support our 37 members in their social justice missions.
That support translates into action. In 2007, Community Shares again raised
more than $1 million dollars and surpassed our campaign goal. A wonderful
accomplishment, yes. But more importantly, this support strengthens the voice
of our members. Herein lies the real significance of the collaboration.
Alone, each of our members brings voice to specific social justice issues—the
health and safety of women and children, lack of health care for all, jobs and a
living wage, fair housing, predatory lending, homelessness, livable and safe neighborhoods, racism, and loss
of civil rights. Each gives voice to the voiceless in unique ways.
But there is real power and energy when the voices of our 37 members combine. I feel it every time our
members gather. Conversations start, connections are made, solutions happen. Together, our members
provide a single, strong, and adamant voice for justice.
We are the voice of social justice. Let it ring loud and clear.
—Jacquie Talbott
Community Shares… The Voice of Social Justice
Our member organizations all share a focus on bringing about change by breaking down the
many barriers faced by marginalized people and their communities in order to create a healthier, safer and more just society for all of us.

—a book signing
In August, Dr. Stephen Post, author of Why Good
Things Happen to Good People, spoke about the
life-enhancing benefits of philanthropy and signed
his book at a reception at Trinity Commons.
Sacred Path Books & Art, Trinity Cathedral, Ten
Thousand Villages, and Community Shares cosponsored the event, where Community Shares
members provided literature about their work.
Complementing Dr. Post’s talk, Benie Hopkins,
from Union Miles Development Corporation,
spoke about her experience as a seasoned volunteer.

Campaign 2007—The Kickoff
Campaign Pledges Top $1 Million
Community Shares kicked off its 2007 Campaign on
September 6 at Cleveland City Hall with Cleveland
City Councilman Anthony Brancatelli serving as
Master of Ceremonies. Attendance topped 300, including representatives from every Shares member
organization as well as supporters from many of the
workplaces where Shares campaigns are held.
For the second year in a row, Community Shares topped
the $1 million mark in pledges and exceeded the previous year’s total, thanks to the efforts of leaders in 150
workplaces in Greater Cleveland who offered their
employees the option to give to Community Shares.
Leadership
The City of Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio
Combined Federal Campaign are Community Shares’
largest campaigns, both in number of donors and total
contributions. We thank them for taking this important
leadership role in the community.
Kudos to the City of Cleveland
Combined Campaign!
Honoring their employees’ desire for choice in giving,
the City offers its workers the choice of giving to three
federations—Community Shares, United Way, and
UNCF. All three make significant contributions to our
community. We thank Honorary Chair Mayor Frank
Jackson, Co-Chair Trudy Hutchinson, Director of
Personnel/Human Resources, Campaign Coordinator
Tom Antonello, Manager of Employee Relations/Benefits, and each of the numerous Campaign Managers
who contributed to the campaign’s success.
Kickoff at Cleveland City Hall
Thanks to the following donors who supported our Kickoff: Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Dave’s Supermarket, Gypsy Beans & Baking Co., Einstein Bros. Bagels (Lakewood), Einstein Bros. Bagels (Willoughby), Bruegger’s
(Beachwood), Bruegger’s (Willoughby , and Babycakes (Cleveland Heights).
Northeast Ohio Combined Federal Campaign
Surpasses Record-Breaking 2006 Results
Under the leadership of Campaign Co-Chairs William
Montague and Lyn Luttner, the 2007 Northeast Ohio
Combined Federal Campaign raised $2,100,000, a 6.2% increase over 2006. Of this total, Community Shares raised
$47,754 from 289 donors, a 9.8% increase in donors and a
23% increase in donations. We thank Mike Isakov, our
Combined Federal Campaign representative, for his hard
work on Shares’ behalf.
Greatest Campaign Growth
Kaiser Permanente increased pledges by 29%, the highest
percentage increase in a Shares workplace in 2007.
Increasing Awareness
Mary Zaller, Karyn Pistone, and Deanna Rankin staffed a
Community Shares booth at the 2007 State of Ohio Human
Resource Conference in September at Sawmill Creek Resort
and Conference Center. They made connections with companies to introduce the idea of adding Community Shares to
their workplace charitable campaign offerings.
Volunteers
Community Shares could not exist without the truly extraordinary support of its many volunteers. They help by making
deliveries, serving on committees, speaking on our behalf
during the campaign, and in countless other ways. In 2007,
we benefited from 3,100 hours of service contributed by our
members and another 350 hours given by community volunteers not affiliated with member organizations.
Volunteers support our special events, annual meeting,
campaign kickoff, and all campaign efforts with energy, enthusiasm, and hours of hard work. To each of our volunteers,
too many to list, thank you for your work! It is all-important
in helping us achieve our mission.
Interns
Community Shares participates in college and
university intern programs such as Cleveland’s
Summer on the Cuyahoga, Baldwin-Wallace
College’s Project Affinity, and Miami University’s
Urban Leadership Internship Program. These
programs provide students with authentic and
valuable experience in the nonprofit world and provide Community Shares with increased capacity to
complete projects, particularly as we prepare each
summer for our fall workplace campaign.
Our enthusiastic appreciation goes to: Lauren
Rummel, James Harris-Chappell, Sasha Sadrai,
and Katy Taylor for their outstanding assistance
last summer in preparing for the fall workplace
campaign; Jenna Ogden for her important work
organizing our archives; and Emily Roeder, who
made our website easier to navigate. In addition,
our interns offer invaluable fresh perspectives and
inspire the rest of us with their passion and energy.

Slavic Village… Change through Partnerships
In response to the tragic shooting of 12 year old Asteve “Cookie” Thomas, Slavic Village
Development took swift action. Five days after the tragedy, SVD brought together over 100
of its partners—area schools, churches, civic organizations, and businesses—to publicly announce the creation of the Anti-Violence Initiative. They spearheaded the buy-back of 421
guns, partnered with Boys & Girls Club, Catapult Learning Centers, and Job Corps to provide
valuable resources and proactive opportunities for the community, and put together a graffiti removal program that resulted in the removal of hundreds of instances of gang-related
graffiti throughout the neighborhood. They were awarded the prestigious MK Anisfield-Wolf
Award for their quick, effective work.

St. Clair Superior Development... Reducing Crime
The St. Clair Superior Development Corporation introduced and implemented the STANCE
crime reduction program in 2007. The STANCE initiative effected significant decreases in
aggravated assaults, homicides, motor vehicle thefts, nonresidential burglaries, rapes, and
weapons violations between East 55th and East 105th Streets, from Chester to St. Clair Avenues. The area experienced a considerable decline in the murder rate in particular, with the
number of homicides decreasing by 39.13% from 2006 to 2007.
