Quintus walks to school slowly and stops often, but Horatia proceeds quickly; she
reaches the school first and greets the girls who are waiting near the door; she has a
long conversation with Iulia, a very pretty girl. Quintus sees a friend named Gaius in the
road; he calls him. Gaius is hurrying to school, but when he hears Quintus, he stops
and says, ‘What are you doing, Quintus? You ought to hurry. You are coming to school
late. I am hurrying.’ Quintus answers: ‘We are not coming to school late, Gaius.’ He
tells Gaius to wait. He is anxious, but he does wait. And so Quintus and Gaius slowly go
to school.
The other children are already there. The master goes out of the door and tells
them to enter and sit; the boys want to play, the girls want to work. When the master
does not see Quintus or Gaius, he is angry, and he shouts: ‘Why are Quintus and Gaius
not here? Why are they coming late?’ Finally Quintus and Gaius enter and greet the
master. But he shouts: ‘Why do you come late? You are bad boys. He orders them to sit
down quickly.
For a long time the children sit and listen to the master; for a long time the master
shouts and teaches letters. The children write letters in their tablets; the master looks at
the tablets and corrects the letters.
Decimus, a big and foolish boy, is learning letters with difficulty. The master
orders him to bring his tablet to him; he looks at the tablet. ‘Decimus,’ he says, ‘you
are an ass; you are writing the letters incorrectly.’ Decimus says, ‘You are wrong,
master; I am not an ass. I am writing the letters correctly. Look!’ He writes the letters
again. But Flavius says, ‘you are impudent, Decimus, and an ass; you are writing the
letters incorrectly.’
The children work for a long time. Finally Iulia says, ‘We are working hard,
master; we are writing letters well; we are tired. And so you ought to send us off home.’
Flavius looks at her kindly. ‘Yes,’ he says; ‘you are working hard, children. And
so I order you to go home.’ The others hurry home happily, but Flavius orders Decimus
to remain at the school. He says, ‘You, Decimus, must write the letters again.’ And so
Decimus sits in the school miserably while the others play in the road.
