Unit Title: Grade 11 Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology Title: Nature vs. Nurture Lesson # 3 and 4 Critical Learning -Collaborative work will be included for critical learning in this lesson. -Looking at questions in regards to The Genie Story Grade 11 Guiding Questions Guiding question for the course: What is Socialization, and how does it relate to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology as a whole? Guiding questions for this lesson: Who is ‘Genie’? What evidence suggested that Genie missed her time period for acquiring language? Curriculum Expectations Overall Expectations Describe some differences and similarities in the approaches taken by anthropology, psychology, and sociology to the concept of self in relation to others. Specific Expectations Demonstrate and understanding of anthropological, psychological, and sociological theories that deal with socialization (e.g., enculturation, nature verses nurture, social isolation) Instructional Components and Context Readiness Materials For this lesson, I will have already introduced in the previous class what we will be talking about. Learning Goals (Unpacked Expectations) At the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand Nature vs. Nurture and how it plays a role in The Genie Story “Secret of the Wild Child” (The Genie Story) Title: Nature vs. Nurture Lesson #3 and 4 Minds On Grade 11 Approximately 0 minutes Pause and Ponder I will not spend any time on an introductory activity, as I want the class to start watching this documentary. I will however introduce briefly what the documentary is about and for the class to start relating this documentary to Nature vs. Nature and how it is all connected. Approximately 60 Minutes Lesson #3 Watch “Secret of the Wild Child” documentary Lesson # 4 I will hand out a set of questions that we can all have a discussion on after the documentary. 1) Why was the girl named ‘Genie’ by researchers? 2) Why was the term forbidden experiment used? 3) What were some of the similarities and differences between Genie and Marc Itard’s “Wild Boy of Averyon” (Victor)? 4) What evidence suggested that Genie missed her time period for acquiring language? 5) What evidence suggests that she may have been suffering from brain damage? 6) Do you think that Genie was exploited in the name of science or were the researchers genuinely concerned for her welfare? Seminar -Everyone sit circle-Seminar Time -Create their own questions from the movie-they will discuss this during the seminar. -We will have one moderator and have a student-centered learning lesson. Choose one student to be the moderator to speak out loud everyone’s questions, and this will be answered as a group. Consolidation Approximately 1 Minute Explain to the class that we will continue the movie (if there is any time left over) and then move into the questions I have handed out and have a group discussion based on this documentary, as well as the seminar. Differentiation (DI) • ESL students who do not feel comfortable sharing their thoughts in their group may pair up with someone from the same language group. • Students with special learning needs will be given extra time on anything in class they may need more time with.
