Professor Margaret Allotey-Pappoe Email: mallotey@mvnu.edu (Preferred contact) Office: (740) 397-9000, ext. 3043 Art and Design Criteria Categories Quality of Work: The overall impression of the work produced. Student craftsmanship should be impeccable. Student must demonstrate a consistent body of work. Work Ethic: Work submitted must portray and show dedication. Student shows dedication by working outside of class hours; creating a positive atmosphere and is willing to receive critique and do what it takes to fix problems that arise in their work. Creativity/Originality: The degree to which the work is autonomous, authentic and inventive, drawing from history while not plagiarizing it. The student should demonstrate a sense of ownership of his or her aesthetic development and self-‐motivated rigor. Conceptual and Aesthetic Ideas: Exhibit evidence of visual thinking that reflects its historical context that may promote a particular idea to which the student has ownership beyond technical abilities. Potential: The degree to which we can see a trajectory of growth and learning (i.e. is the student giving us reason to believe the quality of the work will continue to expand?) Presentation: Is your work gallery or client ready? Student demonstrates thoughtful and intentional presentation that supports the work rather than being an arbitrary accouterment (i.e. the work is not better because it is framed, it is better if it needs to be framed.) Artist Statement: You must submit a 200-‐word artist statement: How would you define your artistic/designer aesthetic and the premise for your work? Describe as simply as possible what it is that you hope to do, or show, or say with your art and design and what it is that makes you interested in doing, showing and saying that. If there is something unique or important to you about your process, talk about that too. This is your chance to explain the true nature of your work or what might not be obvious to the viewer. Be concise. This is tantamount to the conversation that might take place in a studio visit or with a client. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Esther Buchwald Art Sophomore Scholarship APPLICATION/COVER SHEET _________________________________________________________________________ Date ______________________________________ Major _____________________________________ Name _______________________________________________________________ GPA ________________ Street Address _______________________________________________________________________________ City, State, Zip _______________________________________________________________________________ Home Phone __________________________________ Cell Phone __________________________________ E-mail _______________________________________________________________________________________ Art—10 artworks submitted Name Medium Dimensions Date 1. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 4. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 5. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 6. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 7. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 8. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 9. _________________________________________________________________________________________ 10. _______________________________________________________________________________________
