Relationship to academic programs and transferability BIOL 2654 was designed to meet specific student needs either individually or within a program and is designed to transfer to other colleges and universities. KCC participates in the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), a statewide transfer agreement for general education courses. All colleges and universities participating in the IAI agree to accept a collective “package” of IAI general education courses; transfer of courses separately is not guaranteed. For more information about IAI, go to their website at www.itransfer.org and IAI. For the transferability of courses to specific four-year institutions, go to u.select. Course Goals and Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, you will: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Understand the anatomical structures and physiologic process of the cardiovascular system. Understand the anatomical structures and physiologic process of the respiratory system. Understand the anatomical structures and physiologic process of the digestive system. Understand the anatomical structures and physiologic process of the urinary system. Understand the anatomical structures and physiologic process of the reproductive system. *Anatomical structure list can be found in outcomes attachment 1. General Education Goals and Objectives The general education program at KCC is designed to enable students to acquire communication and reasoning skills at a level reflecting college-level learning. Students who complete the general education program will be able to examine complex topics and apply systematic processes to form conclusions. The specific general education objectives addressed in this course are: Communication: Students will communicate with precision, clarity, fluency, accuracy, and coherence through their reading, writing, and verbal communications. Inquiry and Analysis: Students will examine complex topics and apply systematic processes resulting in formed conclusions. If you miss class you will be at a severe disadvantage. If you miss on a quiz day, you will have five school days to make up the quiz. No more than one lecture quiz may be made up without the instructor’s approval. If you know you will be missing on a quiz day, you may arrange to take the quiz early. If you arrive to class after an exam has already started you will not be allowed to begin the exam and will have to take the make-up. All make-up quizzes are essay format and are conducted in my office or the testing center. Lab quizzes cannot be made up, so don’t miss them. Attendance during lab periods is critical to learning. If you miss on a lab day when a report is due, you cannot turn in the lab report late. This will result in a loss of all points for that lab report. Instructional Philosophy There is no substitute for a complete and thoughtful reading of the assigned text chapters. This reading should be completed before the lecture period pertaining to the text assignment. Objectives appear at the beginning of each chapter; these objectives tell you what capabilities you should acquire as a result of studying, attending the lectures and completing assignments relating to that particular chapter. “You don’t really understand something until you can explain it to your grandmother.” - Albert Einstein Laboratory Safety Attendance at the first laboratory meeting is required. A student may not participate in lab if he/she has missed the first lab meeting, which includes the mandatory lab safety training. If a student misses the first week of lab, he/she must notify the instructor to make arrangements to make up the safety training before the end of the first week of the semester. Students are expected to comply with the KCC Science Laboratory Safety Rules at all times. These rules will be discussed during the first lab meeting and each student will sign an acknowledgement of receipt and understanding. Students who do not comply with the safety rules will be asked to leave the lab and will receive no credit for that day’s work. College Policies Withdrawals When it is necessary to withdraw from a course or from the college, a student may do so on or before the withdrawal date without receiving a punitive final grade. Students should use Change of Schedule forms which are available in Student Services. Students may submit Change of Schedule forms to Student Services or through the mail, but they must be postmarked no later than the withdrawal date. No withdrawals are allowed by phone. To determine the last date to withdraw with a grade of “W” in this course, log into KCConnect and click on “my registration statement” under Academic Profile.
