Receives $100,000 from
Hyundai Hope on Wheels

The Broward Health Foundation recently received a $100,000 “Hope Grant” from Hyundai
Hope on Wheels to benefit pediatric cancer patients at Broward Health Chris Evert Children’s
Hospital. The donation was made during September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and
will be used to hire one full-time Child Life Specialist and one part-time Clinical Nurse Specialist
in the Pediatric Cancer Center. These two positions are critical in the treatment and recovery of
pediatric cancer patients as they provide psychosocial support and child-focused education to
children with cancer, as well as support and education to the child’s family members.
Hyundai Motor America and its dealers joined the fight against childhood cancer in 1998 and
created Hyundai Hope on Wheels. This year, Hope on Wheels donated more than $23 million to
fight childhood cancer.
“This grant will have a tremendous impact on us here at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital,” said
Jamey Thaw, CEO of Broward General Medical Center and Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. “It
will greatly improve the lives of our patients during their hospital visits and beyond.”

Foundation over the
past year. In this issue,
you will find several
pages of individuals,
companies, organizations
and employees that have
generously contributed to the Broward Health
Foundation.
In these tough economic times, charitable
contributions are even more critical to the health
of our community, and I commend our donors
for recognizing the importance of giving during
challenging times. Over the past several years, the
number of individuals and families that are uninsured
has dramatically increased. Yet, they still have the
same health care needs as everyone else. Helping
our community is a shared responsibility that
benefits all of us.
In addition to our annual list of donors, in this issue
you will also read about Drew Grossman, the new
CEO at Coral Springs Medical Center; how Panera
Bread is partnering with the Foundation to raise
much-needed funds for Chris Evert Children’s
Hosptial; about the specialized programs of the
Memory Disorder Center at North Broward Medical
Center; and much more.
With the holidays right around the corner, now might
be a perfect time to recognize someone special in
your life. When you make a donation of this type,
a personalized card will be sent to the person or
family informing them of your contribution. More

support is vital to
helping us provide for
the healthcare needs
of our community.
Last year, when it
became evident that
our operating environment and our funding
to care for the poor and the uninsured
would undergo dramatic changes due
to federal healthcare reform, the Board
of Commissioners asked administrators
to begin exploring options to ensure our
continued ability to provide healthcare to
Broward residents long into the future.
Based on those findings, various options
for the structure of Broward Health
were discussed and it was recently
recommended that Broward Health explore
the option of a possible transition to a
501(c)(3), a community not-for-profit
corporation. Under that model, all assets
and profits remain in Broward County to
support jobs and community reinvestment.
As with any proposed change or transition,
there are concerns and issues which must
be examined and addressed. We are in
the process of identifying and examining
issues related to access to care, impact on
our workforce and impact on medical staff.
We are also obtaining feedback from the
general public, employees and physicians
and evaluating the detailed impact and
financial analyses as well as hiring experts
to evaluate specific impact areas – such as
malpractice and pensions.
Since 1982 more than 20 hospitals in
Florida have transitioned from public
management to private management.
This kind of transition is allowed, even
encouraged, by Florida law to allow public
hospitals to compete with for-profit
hospitals while providing quality health
care.
6th Annual
Race for Women’s Wellness
Broward Health Coral Springs Medical Center is gearing up for its 6th Annual Race for Women’s
Wellness set for Saturday, February 12. The entire community is invited to attend! This is in support
of raising funds for the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund which provides free mammograms, breast
imaging and biopsies to women who otherwise would not be able to afford them. Since its inception in
2006, the race has raised nearly $70,000. The 5k walk/run begins at 7 a.m. at Coral Springs Medical

Pediatric Services at
Broward Health Weston
Broward Health Weston offers a wide variety of pediatric services, among them:
• The board certified physicians at the Urgent Care Center provide fast, convenient pediatric care for
minor injuries and illnesses. For more information about the Urgent Care Center, call 954.217.5700.
• The Diagnostic Imaging Center is a full service diagnostic center providing radiology procedures on all pediatric patients. Image Gently protocols have been adopted for all 128 multi-slice CTs performed on pediatric patients to significantly reduce radiation exposure in addition to the inherent
shielding, providing a superior scan with added safety measures. To contact the Diagnostic Imaging

• The Surgery Center of Weston, LLC performs outpatient surgery on pediatric patients as early as one
month and includes ophthalmology, urology, ENT and plastic surgeries. The staff is specially trained in

Jerome Hutchinson, Jr.
Hutchinson brings 25 plus years of broadcast and marketing
experience to the ICABA™ brand. Prior to launching
ICABA™ Media Holdings, LLC, in 2008, Hutchinson enjoyed a
successful career as a radio broadcasting executive. From 2002
through 2008, he served as General Sales Manager
for three of the nation’s top five urban radio stations beginning with
Houston’s KMJQ-FM, Majic 102, then Atlanta’s WVEE-FM, V-103, and
last, with Miami’s
WEDR-FM, 99JAMZ.
Since arriving in South Florida in 2005, Hutchinson has been active
in the community serving on the boards of 100 Black Men of Greater
Ft. Lauderdale, the Broward Alliance, Pam Hutchinson Bridge Builder
Foundation, the Broward Workforce Development Board, the Broward
Presidents Community Council, the Florida Memorial President’s
Advisory Council, and the Broward Alliance Governor’s Council. He is
also an alumnus of the 2008-09 Leadership Broward Class XXVII and
a member of The Strategic Forum.
Hutchinson resides in Davie and is the proud father of two daughters.

4th Annual Celebration of Smiles Motorcycle Run
Proceeds benefit the patients at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. The ride
will begin at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital located at Broward General
Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. It will consist of a 59 mile (BSO
escorted) ride throughout Broward County. The ride will conclude at
Bru’s Room Sports Grill located on N. University Drive in Coral Springs.
Price is $20 per person or $30 couple. Registration is from at 7:30 to
9:45 a.m. and the ride will start at 10:30 a.m. For more information,

Imperial Point Medical Center Opens
New Outpatient Surgery Center

A new outpatient surgery center recently opened at Broward Health Imperial Point Medical
Center in Fort Lauderdale. Nearly two years ago when a nearby hospital closed, Imperial Point
Medical Center (IPMC) experienced an influx of surgery requests and requests for medical staff
privileges by the displaced surgeons. In response to this need, IPMC purchased 12,260 square
feet of space to create a surgery center in the new Medical Arts Pavilion located just east of the
hospital.
“With an already robust surgery schedule at Imperial Point Medical Center, we needed to meet the
needs of local surgeons and the community…and anambulatory surgery center was the answer,”
said Calvin Glidewell, CEO at IPMC. “The surgery center can accommodate approximately 500
surgical cases monthly.”
The $4.5 million Imperial Point Surgery Center has four dedicated surgical suites and a nonsurgical laser room. Two suites are dedicated to ophthalmic and retinal surgeries. There is a laser
procedure room for non invasive laser eye procedures. The “eye suites” have state-of-the-art
cataract and retina equipment, lasers and microscopes. The hospital’s surgical team of nurses and
technicians that specialize in ophthalmology cases now work at the Surgery Center to deliver the
same level of care and expertise provided by the hospital.
IPMC performs more retinal surgeries than any other hospital in Broward County. Among the
eye conditions treated and surgeries performed at the Center are retinal detachment and reattachment, macular degeneration, cataract surgery with lens implants, corneal transplants,
sutureless vitrectomies, macular hole and pterygium.

In September, the Surgery Center began performing various urologic and pain management
procedures. Kidney stones can now be treated with the “extracoporal shockwave lithotripsy”
machine – a non invasive surgical technique. Pain procedures are performed with the addition of a
C-arm X-ray and table.
“Patients referred to the Imperial Point Surgery Center can expect the same imperial treatment
experienced inside the hospital,” said Dr. Manuel Longo, MD, Lead Anesthesiologist at the
Imperial Point Surgery Center. “The soothing, modern environment is also very impressive.”

Panera Bread Rises to the Challenge
The Broward Health Foundation would like to thank Panera Bread for their active and ongoing
commitment to Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. Over the past year, all nine Panera Bread stores
located throughout Broward County have participated in projects that have raised money for
the children’s hospital. Whether it’s their Pick Two promotion where customers save $1 off their
meal and a $1 donation is given to Chris Evert Children’s Hospital or their recent “Cinnamon
Crunch for Kids” bagel campaign, Panera is making a significant impact in our local community.
In March and April, Chris Evert Children’s Hospital was the beneficiary of Panera’s “Operation Dough-Nation” campaign which
encourages customers to drop their change into the Community Breadbox located at the store’s registers. Chris Evert Children’s
Hospital will once again be the beneficiary of this campaign during the month of December.

Did You Forget Something?
Everyone at one point or another has forgotten where they put their keys, or forgotten a person’s name or maybe a favorite restaurant
or movie. But when memory loss starts to affect an individual’s daily activities, it’s time to see a specialist. A comprehensive evaluation is
necessary to determine the cause of memory loss. The key is to find the proper diagnosis to determine the appropriate treatment.
“If you are forgetting things and it’s becoming worse, do not chalk it up to simply getting older,” says Dr. H. Murray Todd, a neurologist
and Medical Director of the Neurological Institute at Broward Health North Broward Medical Center.
Memory loss can have many causes, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke or other neurological disorders, depression, thyroid imbalance and
nutritional or metabolic disorders. When a patient is diagnosed with a memory disorder, every family member is affected, especially
the caregiver. Through specialized programs at the Memory Disorder Center at North Broward Medical Center, patients are offered a
complete network of assistance for them as well as their family or caregiver.
The Memory Disorder Center is part of the Neurological Institute at North Broward Medical Center and offers evaluation and
treatment for various neurological disorders. It is also part of Florida’s Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative, and partially funded by the Florida
Department of Elder Affairs.
An outpatient diagnostic facility offering a multidisciplinary approach to determining the cause of memory impairment, the Memory
Disorder Center team of specialists includes neurologists, neuropsychologists, a geriatric psychiatrist, social workers and nurses – all of
whom work together to provide a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. Upon the completion of the diagnostic process, the patient and
their family or caregiver meets with the specialists to discuss diagnosis, planning for the future and available resources.

DREW GROSSMAN NAMED CEO OF
BROWARD HEALTH CORAL SPRINGS MEDICAL CENTER
Drew Grossman has been named Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Broward Health Coral
Springs Medical Center (CSMC). Grossman, who served as interim CEO for six months, joined
Broward Health in 2005 as the Chief Operating Officer at CSMC. He was responsible for
managing the operations of the hospital’s day-to-day service departments such as the laboratory,
cardiopulmonary, facilities, quality management, security, guest relations/volunteer services,
pharmacy, radiology, nutritional services, materiel/environmental services/central sterile, and
safety.

Health Education Science from Pennsylvania State University.
