Course Description Art Appreciation is an introductory course which provides a comprehensive overview of the world of visual arts. It serves to enhance understanding and appreciation for a broad range of imagery, media, artists, movements and periods in history. This course illustrates the place of art in social and cultural life and encourages students to develop judgment in art analysis and criticism. Students familiarized with this basic core of information, thought, and experience have the opportunity to become more confident in their visual literacy. This 3 credit course satisfies UNR/UNLV fine arts core curriculum. Required Text A World of Art 5th ed., Henry M. Course Outline This course will follow the general outline of our textbook, as well as art-related events on campus and about town. We will have slide lectures, art walks, class discussions, drawing projects, student presentations, a field trip, essays, and most importantly, a good time enjoying art. It is important to be punctual and attend class. Attendance and participation are 20% of your grade, so absences do lower your grade. You will be allowed only one excused absence. As few as four absences can result in administrative withdrawal or failure. Arriving late and leaving early without prior approval is disruptive and can also be grounds for failure. Plan to be an active learner during class. Also be open to interacting often with classmates. B E H E R E N O W ! I will try to inform you well ahead of time if there will be a cancelation. Tests Be there! No make-ups! Tests are half of your grade. Four testswill be fifty fill-in-theblank and multiple choice questions The Companion Website includes practice tests which students should use as a helpful studyguide to earn higher scores on tests. Please note: There will be a comprehensive assessment test administered online late in the semester. It is required of all Art 160 students and it will cover Chapters 1 - 22 of our text. Study for it like a Final Exam. Student Integrity Policy Acts of academic dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating or plagiarism, falsifying research data or assisting others to do the same shall constitute cause for probation, suspension, or expulsion from TMCC. Simply do NOT hand in papers you did not write and research yourself. Cite your sources. Do not use cited sources for more than 50% of your paper. What are you especially curious about? Ask how to earn some extra credit. Withdrawals & Incompletes It is your responsibility to request a “W” (withdrawal) grade if you choose to drop out. You must go online to Web-Reg or in-person to Admissions & Records (RDMT 319C) to request a “W” grade before the deadline. The instructor cannot give you a “W”. It is your responsibility to request an ‘I’ (incomplete) grade. If you complete 75% of the class with a C or better, but cannot complete the class, you may request an ‘I’ grade. This instructor is opposed to giving incompletes unless the reason is extremely compelling and accompanied by a written statement from a doctor or other professional.
