POWER EFFICIENCY CASE STUDY 7-Eleven 7-Eleven becomes the first retailer to implement Green Charge Network’s GreenStationTM, with resounding success Project Description Green Charge Networks (GCN) has developed an energy storage appliance called the GreenStationTM intended for the customer’s side of the meter. The 100kW / 96kWh GreenStationTM installed at the Queens, NY 7-Eleven location is the first retailer that has successfully implemented the GreenStationTM with the following value streams: » Demand reduction by leveling peak loads. Peak summer demand charge in NYC is around $25/kW. » Increase of load capacity at the facility and avoiding infrastructure upgrades altogether. » Pilot of an integrated demand response program with the premier utility in the country to take advantage of the rapid response. We find that given specific value streams, including the ones described above, the GreenStationTM has an ROI of 3-7 years and is on par with commercial PV for system payback. The goal of the implementation is to build an economic, ROI-driven distributed energy storage solution and to enable grassroots-driven, bottom-up, private sector adoption. www.GreenCharge.Net Case Study Specifications Project name: 7-Eleven, Inc. Primary benefits include peak shaving and demand charge avoidance. The system is tied to a network operations center where loads are monitored and controlled in real-time. Innovative Integration During the evaluation phase of the project, a distribution grid load analysis was performed and it was determined that a service upgrade would be required to install any additional load at the site. The historical site load for the past 1W2 months had surpassed the site’s capacity of 48.6kW by 3.6kW. The installation of the GreenStationTM coupled with an Intertie Protection Relay (IPR) avoided the service upgrade given the GreenStationTM’s ability to monitor total site load and mitigate demand spikes with energy storage. Without the GreenStationTM energy storage, the high-powered load, such as an EV charger, would have necessitated an expensive service upgrade. Furthermore, the GreenStationTM provides demand reduction for 7-Eleven. During the week of July 15th, 2013, when New York City experienced a summer heat wave and its distribution grid hit an all-time peak, the GreenStationTM reduced 7-Eleven’s peak demand by 56%. 7-Eleven has 7,000 locations across the U.S. We have gathered enough data over a 2-year period to prove the economics of the product. 7-Eleven will deploy additional GreenStationTM energy storage systems in California in 2013/2014. Highlights of the GreenStationTM Customer Reference » First of its kind outdoor use with NEMA 3R enclosure “Meeting our customers changing needs while keeping demand charges and thus our electricity costs in check is a very attractive value proposition for us.” - Tom Brennan, Vice President of Infrastructure Services » UL-listed main components » Patent-pending controller technology for charge and discharge every second to offset peaks & reduce demand » Proven performance; installed and operational in New York City; survived Hurricane Sandy » Complimentary to PV Solar and EV charging Technology The GreenStationTM actively minimizes monthly peak demand usage as measured by the utility meter. Historical and real-time data are stored into a cloud based network operation center. As the GreenStationTM learns the site-specific load profile characteristics, the patent-pending predictive algorithm adjusts the second-by-second charge / discharge profile to minimize demand charges. This technology was funded by a Smart Grid development program with the Department of Energy and Con Edison of New York. Since the first installation, GCN’s software technology has increased three-fold in system efficacy and reduced hardware footprint by 2/3. www.GreenCharge.Net 800.426.5010 Sales@GreenCharge.Net
