Caroline Zapata
Growing the Seeds of Success
Three years ago, 21-year-old Caroline Zapata arrived in New York from
Colombia speaking very little English. While taking English classes in
the Language Immersion Program, she realized that a college
education was within her reach if she were willing to work hard. And
work hard she has. Caroline is completing her first year of study at
LaGuardia, having completed 25 credits and boasting a grade point
average of 3.2. She acknowledges support from her family, her desire
to learn, and guidance from teachers and staff at LaGuardia as her
chief reasons for staying focused on her goal to earn a Associate’s
Degree in Liberal Arts in Math and Science.
“I hope to study radiology because I’d like to be a doctor someday.
I want to contribute to society to create a better world. It’s not just
about money for me,” says Caroline.
I hope to study radiology
because I’d like to be a
doctor someday. I want
to contribute to society
to create a better world.
It’s not just about
money for me.
Caroline is one of 113 students participating in the 2009-2010
Semillas Grant, an award of $50,000 to improve academic success
and retention rates in higher education for Latino students. The
Semillas (which means “seeds” in Spanish) Grant is funded by the
Wal-Mart Foundation and is a part of Excelencia in Education’s
“Growing What Works” national initiative. At LaGuardia, the project
seeks to improve the enrollment and retention rates of incoming firstgeneration, minority students by providing advisement, counseling
and support through the first year
of college study.
LaGuardia Community College was one of only 20 colleges and
universities nationwide and the only community college in the City
University of New York chosen to receive the Semillas “Growing
What Works” Grant in 2009-2010.

Division of Adult & Continuing Education @ LaGuardia Community College
Dear Students,
LaGuardia Community College
Dr. Gail O. Mellow, President (on leave)
Welcome
LaGuardia Community College is a great institution. I always knew that, but
now acting as Interim President, with an even wider view of what happens at
the College, I can more greatly appreciate all the fantastic offerings available to
our students and our community.
Dr. Peter Katopes, Interim President
Division of Adult and Continuing
Education
Exciting things happen here! Did you know that approximately 20% of our
students got their start in LaGuardia’s Division of Adult and Continuing
Education (ACE)? Each year, ACE helps non-credit students learn English, earn a
GED and then transfer to credit programs. It’s an astonishing accomplishment to successfully educate and guide
someone for whom college was a far-away dream. Yet here at LaGuardia we see that happening again and again.

Welcome to LaGuardia Community College!
LaGuardia stands out as a national leader in quality higher education. This is
illustrated by a recent invitation from the White House to participate in its
Summit on Community Colleges. I had the honor of attending the event, in
which college administrators, policy makers, business leaders and philanthropists
from across the country joined together to discuss the important work that
community colleges are doing on behalf of our students, who come from all
walks of life. Some of the discussion centered on adult students, who face
certain challenges on their journey to getting back to school and earning a
degree. Many opportunities to move community colleges forward—and serve you better—are on the horizon.
Kimberly Kendall, Director, Career & Professional Programs
LaGuardia’s Division of Adult and Continuing Education is on the cutting edge of continuing education. We are
a U.S. Green Building Council partner and are offering this winter to those in the construction industry an
opportunity to learn about and become certified in sustainability practices in building, renovating and maintaining
buildings with our new Green Professional (GPRO) Building Skills Training certificate program.

programs and courses to help you learn English or prepare for college; training programs and career development
services to get you into the job you want; and business services that provide large and small business owners with

Advocating for Adult Education – “Our programs and courses change lives.”
If asked, Dr. Jane MacKillop could give a lengthy discourse
on the value of adult education. She could discuss surveys
that she’s conducted or statistics that she’s gathered on
how and why ACE programs and services are successful.
But what she explains is, “Continuing education is the only
way for adults to improve their overall education, make
career changes and upgrade their skills.” Simply stated, she
says, “Our programs and courses change lives.”
With a Ph.D. in adult education and over 30 years of
professional experience in educational settings, ranging
from teaching ESL to founding a continuing education
division to helping create a prestigious business program
curriculum, Dr. MacKillop has seen firsthand how
continuing education can help make dreams come true.
“Continuing education provides the key to success through
counseling, courses, classes and workshops,” she asserts.
“Once adults return to school, their opportunities broaden.
They can get a better job or go to college.”
As Associate Dean of LaGuardia’s Division of Adult and
Continuing Education, Dr. MacKillop supervises nine precollege academic and professional programs, coordinates
research and manages marketing, outreach and recruitment
efforts—all with the goal of helping adults reach their
educational and professional potential. “LaGuardia offers
a wide range of pre-college, training, enrichment and
business programs for learners aged 18 months to 80,”
she says. “We offer everyone the opportunity to build
their future!”

Meet Matthew Cody
Honing the Integrated Approach to Teaching English
Matthew Cody worked as a writing tutor for the New York City Public School System. He taught ESL at private language schools.
He has even written young adults novels for Random House publishing company, something he still enjoys doing. But where he
has found a real calling and sense of accomplishment is in the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) teaching ESL.
“The holistic approach of an immersion classroom—the opportunity to teach the language based around a particular theme—
really appealed to me,” says Mr. Cody, who has been with CLIP for almost two years. “It’s been one of the more challenging jobs
I’ve held, but also (not surprisingly) rewarding. There is a common spirit to the work throughout the college – in the students,
teachers and staff – to work through whatever obstacles may come and focus on the education. Wherever the future takes me,
I’ll remember LaGuardia as the place where I really honed my teaching craft.
