Our Name
The name Ewha was bestowed by King Gojong
in 1887 to commemorate the beginning of
women’s education in Korea.
It serves not merely as a name of this time-honored
institution but as a symbol of the tradition
and spirit of women’s education in Korea.
The wisdom of knowledge, the virtue of goodness
and the harmony of beauty make up
the three pillars of education at Ewha,
dedicated to nurturing both intelligence
and character in our students.
Pursuing the common good
for all mankind
as a world-class university
Ewha Womans University originated from Ewha Haktang, founded in May 1886 by Mary F. Scranton,
an American missionary from the Methodist Episcopal Church. As Korea’s first educational institution for
women, Ewha pioneered new frontiers for women to lead more humane lives, and guided its students toward
a path of compromise and contribution, of giving back to society the benefits they received through education. It was Scranton’s goal to foster, through an education based on Christian values, better Koreans.
Ewha’s first students were daughters from poor families, some deprived of shelter or care. Education
brought about rapid and enormous changes to their lives and ways of thinking. Esther Park, whose maiden
name was Kim Jeom-dong, was Ewha’s fourth student who, after studying medicine in the U.S., became
Korea’s first female physician, devoting her life to mission work and free medical service. Numerous other
graduates from Ewha’s early years contributed to the effort toward Korea’s independence from Japanese occupation and national advancement.
Ewha today remains just as dedicated to the teaching of not only knowledge but the importance of
social contribution. The students are taught to pursue their dreams and achieve success through education,
and to use their success to help build a better future for mankind. Peace, prosperity and humane living are
the universal ideals shared around the world. Ewha, as an international institution with a history spanning
126 years, is dedicated to contributing to the world at large.
Ewha was founded by a woman and has developed into the world’s largest women’s university in the
hands of women, educating some of Korea’s most talented and outstanding women. From the start, Ewha
was conceived as an international effort and its history is a record of the pursuit of the common good for
all mankind. We at Ewha are determined to continue to bring about change as we move towards the future,
towards higher achievement and contribution.

The humanization of women is Ewha’s founding
mission, which has served as the driving force
behind our history and growth.
Based on the Christian virtues of knowledge,
goodness and beauty, this mission makes up
the core of our spirit in the pursuit of
our vision in education.
Kim Sun-Uk
Ewha’s origins date back to May of 1886 when classes began with a single student, launching a proud,
unprecedented history in the education of Korean women, achieved through challenge and devotion. Its
history is a record of remarkable growth into the world’s oldest and the biggest institution for women’s education, paving the path not only for the women of Korea but from around the world.
The world we live in today is one that propels endless competition. We at Ewha plan to confront this
new environment through changes driven by the spirit that we have inherited, based on sharing and service, on compassion and justice.
Ewha stands at a crucial turning point, faced with new challenges. We are determined to turn these
challenges into new opportunities that will open the door to exciting new changes, to build an institution
that is equipped for world-class education and research; that seeks future paradigms rooted in new values
of femininity; that leads fearlessly into an adventurous future of experimentation and challenge; that strives
to define and execute new social responsibilities of the university for our times.
Ewha hereby takes its first step toward its new role as an international hub for women’s education.
I hope to bring new changes that will allow Ewha to serve women from around the world, to realize their
dreams and to explore new opportunities.
For 126 years Ewha has strived for the humanization of women, a vision that is spreading fast to every
corner of the world, one that we will continue to uphold into the future.
I sincerely ask for your support and encouragement as we confront our challenges on our path toward
change. I pray for God’s blessing for everyone we encounter as we realize our vision of Ewha.

Liberal education, path to great scholarship
We live in times that call for specialization. The importance of liberal arts,
nevertheless, has not diminished, for they lay a broad foundation that enriches
life and learning. Ewha has traditionally stressed liberal arts education. Diverse
approaches to liberal arts education have been put to the test over the years
with the aim of developing students’ intellects and building them up as members of Ewha. And now Ewha is planning new changes for the new era. Starting in 2013, liberal education at Ewha will focus on fostering creative thinkers
who embrace Ewha’s values of sharing and communication to lead the global
era of the 21st century. First, required courses in the liberal arts, such as “Indepth Reading and Writing” and “Sharing Leadership,” will be created, and
foreign language education will be strengthened to improve students’ multidisciplinary reasoning abilities and communication skills. Second, Ewha will
offer core courses in the liberal arts to improve student insight into the humanities, artistic ability, scientific and ecological thought, global leadership,
and general research skills. Ewha is committed to fostering students who have
a strong sense of empathy and communication skills based on character and
open-mindedness, students who will pursue Ewha’s defining values while displaying outstanding leadership.

Residential College, life and learning in one
Ewha’s new Residential College (RC) will provide a total education that encompasses not only expertise but also general knowledge and character building, and it will foster new leaders who can meet the demands of the new era.
First implemented in the U.K. at the University of Oxford and the University
of Cambridge, the RC system has been a model for undergraduate education
in prestigious universities in the U.S., including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.
In residential colleges, dormitories are not only student residences but also
educational space. Students in residence, who live and eat together, are offered
a range of educational opportunities to develop their character, creativity and
leadership in this newly created space for advanced education. Ewha’s RC will
continue the tradition of Ewha Haktang, Korea’s first residential college, and
serve as a community and an education venue for future talents. By living and
learning together and carrying out social tasks as a community rather than as
isolated individuals, freshmen will gain valuable experience. And by providing practical advice on such topics as course selection and academic planning, mentors—who will include the dean of the RC, faculty advisors, counselors, and upperclassmen—will help incoming students plan their future while
feeling at home at Ewha. The RC will play a pivotal role in producing global
citizens who embrace Ewha’s core values.

Ewha Care Net (ECN) provides close support to all Ewha students, on a wide
range of issues from coursework to employment and career planning. Student
health, academic performance, and career planning are managed systematically through organic cooperation among the Ewha Language Center, Career
Development Center, Student Counseling Center, and University Health Service Center. Ewha also provides generous scholarships so students can concentrate on their studies without excessive financial worry. Over KRW 200 billion
has been raised for scholarships, three times more than the previous reserve,
and more scholarships will be awarded by expanding the budget by KRW 1 billion each year. In addition, in order to ensure that Ewha graduates continue to
succeed after graduation, the Career Quotient, run by the Career Development
Center, offers a wide range of support to students: quality education; career
counseling; employment information; mediation between job applicants and
potential employers; career management after employment; career-related research and publications; one-on-one career counseling with personnel managers in major companies; recommendation for internships; and career development guidance.

Ever since Ewha Haktang first broke the taboo against women’s education in
Korea and took in its first student in 1886, Ewha has been setting the pace for
women in science in Korea by producing the first female scientist and founding the first women’s hospital. In August 2011, Ewha took further strides with
the “Ewha Global Top 5 Project,” which awards KRW 10 billion in research
funds over three years to five specialized research areas. The project consists
of two categories: Ewha Global Frontier, which supports project teams who
have proven themselves through their outstanding research; and Ewha Raw
Diamond, which supports project teams that show development potential.
Through the Global Top 5 Project, Ewha aims to be ranked first among domestic universities and in the top fifty internationally, thus fulfilling its role as a
bastion of global female talent.

Ewha selected for IBS project in basic science
Ewha is lighting the path to the future through the development of basic
science. The university has been selected to receive KRW 100 billion in research funds over 10 years by the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), which aims
to rank among the top ten research institutes in the field of basic science by
2012. Now Ewha is taking one step closer to realizing its dream of “Science
Ewha.” Ewha will secure creative knowledge and technology for world-class
basic science research and become a true center for basic science research to
foster next-generation researchers. IBS selected Dr. Gabriel Aeppli to lead
research at Ewha. Dr. Aeppli is a Royal Society fellow and a renowned expert
in nanotechnology and physics. IBS’s research, which will be based at Ewha,
includes plans to establish the Seoul Institute for Atomic Scale Science and
Engineering under the initiative of Dr. Aeppli. This is expected to result in integrated research, which has only been dreamt of before, as well as innovative
IT technology development. Ewha is benefiting from its established strength
in science: this research center designation follows on the heels of its industry
collaboration with Solvay. The new IBS research center will enable dramatic
expansion of Ewha’s research capacity not only in the field of basic science but
also in practical application.

Hub for research to benefit human lives
Academic research and new knowledge creation are the most fundamental duties of a university. In this spirit of scholarly pursuit, Ewha’s numerous research
organizations are on the forefront of cutting-edge knowledge. The Korean
Women’s Institute, which laid the foundation for the fledgling academic discipline known as women’s studies with its establishment in 1977 and has been
blazing new trails ever since, is currently running the Ewha Global Women
Empowerment Program through its umbrella organization, the Asian Center
for Women’s Studies, and taking on the challenge of global women’s education. The Center for Cell Signaling & Drug Discovery Research, which was
established in 2006 and designated as a National Core Research Center by the
Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the National Research
Foundation of Korea, conducts research for the development of medication
for various diseases (cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune system diseases,
and neurological diseases) through inter-disciplinary research and education.
The Ewha Institute for the Humanities, which aims to produce world-class discourse on the humanities, has been spearheading since 2007 the Humanities
Korea Project, “Trans-Humanities: Reimaging and Reconstructing the Human
Sciences,” sponsored by the National Research Foundation of Korea, and provides archiving, education, and publishing to ensure the informatization, practicalization, and localization of trans-boundary knowledge in the humanities.

International exchange programs: The world is our classroom
Ewha produces strong students capable of working in all corners of the world
through diverse and practical international exchange programs. Every year,
over 1,600 Ewha students participate in a wide range of short- and long-term
educational programs overseas, thus fulfilling a shared dream of humanity.
Through dual and joint degree programs with overseas universities, as well as
exchange and visiting student programs, Ewha is leading academic exchange
across borders. Particularly popular among students is the Faculty-led Study
Abroad Program, Ewha’s signature educational program, in which professors
plan their own itineraries and travel with students to universities or institutions around the world to participate in joint classes and seminars over a period of seven to ten days, and the Ewha Global Initiative exploration program,
which sends students to United Nations offices, embassies, government agencies and university research institutes around the world, develops students’
global capacities. With its leading role in exchange programs, Ewha has also
been selected for six consecutive years as the only Korean partner university

Emphasizing
Social Responsibility
Ewha spirit bears fruit in service for humanity
Ewha Haktang founder Mary F. Scranton stated that Ewha’s singular purpose
in education was to mold young Korean girls into “better Koreans.” Based on
this philosophy, Ewha graduates have gone on to become Korea’s outstanding
female leaders. Now as the world’s biggest women’s university, Ewha is keeping
its founding spirit alive. The Ewha Global Partnership Program (EGPP), the
first degree program for female students in developing countries, has become
Ewha’s signature program for educating women around the world since its
launch in 2006. The Ewha-KOICA Master’s Program in International Studies
was launched in 2007 and provides full scholarships to female public servants
in developing countries in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency. In January 2012, Ewha created the Ewha Global Empowerment
Program (EGEP), the first of its kind in Korea, to educate women in nongovernmental and public sectors in Asia and Africa, fostering next-generation
women leaders through education and global networking. Through these efforts, Ewha has laid the groundwork for women’s training programs around
the world and positioned itself as a genuine hub for global women’s education.

Building a more beautiful world through sharing
As an intellectual community that maintains its commitment to, cooperation
with, and responsibility towards society, Ewha endeavors to preserve its core
values in an ever-changing world. The President Meets 10,000 Ewha Family
Members campaign was designed to strengthen communication within the
190,000-strong Ewha family, and the Seonbae Ramyeon scholarship campaign,
in which current students and alumnae worked together to raise donations
from among the student body, provided support to students who might otherwise be unable to attend Ewha. Since the summer of 2000, the Ewha Volunteer
Group has participated in a number of volunteer activities both at home and
abroad to provide education, construction, and medical aid to those in need,
thus putting into practice Ewha’s Christian founding spirit of neighborly love.
The Beautiful World Made by Ewha event, launched in 2001 and hosted by
the Volunteer Center, holds a range of different programs, such as making and
distributing kimchi for the winter, a walk-a-thon, programs for children from
multiethnic families, raising donations for scholarships, and helping the underprivileged in the local community.

Campus Master Plan
A cutting-edge global campus for the future
The Ewha campus is well-known for its historic buildings and beautiful woods
and gardens. The buildings, in particular, highlight Ewha’s long history, reflecting the era in which they were built and the educational visions of that time:
from the classic, British stone architecture built by missionaries in the 1930s,
to the many buildings that went up to meet the exploding student population
from the 1950s to 1970s, and finally to the grandiose and futuristic architecture of the Ewha Campus Complex. In 2013, Ewha will unveil its new campus
master plan. This long-term plan will restructure the campus into cuttingedge spaces and dedicated living, research, and education zones, based on the
founding spirit of Ewha and the blueprint of its future. It will lay the foundation for Ewha to greet its next century as a prestigious global university.

Becoming a globalized and professionalized society for the 21 st century
must start with understanding humanity, and this is only possible on a liberal
arts foundation. The College of Liberal Arts aims to produce students who
are self-reflective critical thinkers, with an understanding of ethics and an historical consciousness. In addition, it endeavors to foster true, open-minded
members of a professionalized and globalized society who understand and
embrace plural cultures.
First established in 1925, the Humanities Division was later renamed the
Department of Literature in the College of Academics in 1945, then the College
of Humanities in 1951, before becoming the College of Liberal Arts in 1982.
At this time, 19 separate majors and divisions were created and split off. Currently, the College of Liberal Arts consists of two divisions and eight majors:
Division of Liberal Arts (Korean Language & Literature, Chinese Language &
Literature, English Language & Literature, French Language & Literature, German Language & Literature, History, and Philosophy) and Division of Christian
Studies (Christian Studies). Based on its long history of advanced academic
performance, the Trans-Humanities Research Team of Ewha’s College of Arts
was selected for the Humanities Korea Project in 2007 to receive KRW 15 billion
in research grants. In addition, Ewha Womans University ranked 20th among
colleges and universities in Asia in the humanities in the “2012 Evaluation of

systems, are well equipped to respond to the needs of the times and foster the
next generation of leaders.
Graduates of the College of Social Sciences have distinguished themselves
in a number of fields, including government, business, international organizations, media, finance, social organizations, academia and research institutes,
and domestic and international NGOs. The College of Social Sciences will continue to serve as a springboard for Ewha students to pursue their dreams.
The dedicated faculty helps students to develop their potential and become global, creative leaders, while alumnae have built a global network to
benefit current and future generations of students.

With the founding of the natural sciences department in 1951, the College
of Natural Sciences has played an integral role in education and research in the
fields of basic and applied sciences at Ewha for the past sixty years. It split off
from the previous College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1982.
Aimed at producing future female leaders in the sciences and technology,
the College of Natural Sciences has equipped the Science Buildings (covering
over 30,000 m²) with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and computer
systems, the Center for Research Facilities of the Research Institute for Basic
Sciences, and a radioisotope lab. In addition, student and faculty research is
facilitated by other university-affiliated research centers.
The College of Natural Sciences has an annual enrollment of approximately 1,450 undergraduates and has produced nearly 11,600 graduates. Most
of the graduates have contributed to basic science research in universities and
research institutes, while many graduates are applying their knowledge of the
natural science to work in educational institutions, government organizations,
finance, and business.
Given the close relationship between science and technology in modern
society, graduates of the College of Natural Sciences are expected to advance
into a wide range of fields.

Established in 1996 as the world’s first engineering college for women,
Ewha’s College of Engineering has stood as a symbol of Ewha’s passion for and
innovations in science. With over 1,400 undergraduates and 180 graduate students, Ewha is leading the study and research that will usher in the future. As
the 21st century is an information-oriented society dominated by professional
technologies, more attention is being given to fields that require the sensitivity, creativity and artistic sensibility unique to women, and women in engineering have become one of the main issues of our time. In response, the College
of Engineering seeks to produce professional female engineers capable of utilizing experimental principles and practices with state-of-the-art equipment as
leaders in the fields of science and technology.
Opened in July 1996, the Asan Engineering Building (9,917.4 m²) houses
a variety of cutting-edge facilities for students. The second building for engineering research and education, the New Engineering Building (10,579 m²),
was completed in September 2008 to provide a top educational environment.
Ewha’s College of Engineering was selected for the Engineering Education
Innovation Center Assistance Program in 2012 and will receive a total of KRW 2
billion over ten years until 2022. The College of Engineering earned accreditations from the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK)
in 2010, and the Architecture Department acquired a five-year accreditation
for its architectural education program in 2011. Ewha also became the first Korean university to sign an agreement with the World Meteorological Organization in 2012.
Achieving

and creativity
Music education at Ewha began in May 1886 on the day Ewha Haktang
was founded, when Mary F. Scranton taught a hymn to her first student. In conjunction with the establishment of Ewha College in April 1925, Ewha created
Korea’s first music department, which has since provided Korea’s first systematic and professional education on Western music and expanded its practice
and theory courses.
Currently Ewha’s College of Music is fully equipped with world-class faculty,
one of Korea’s finest concert halls, and sufficient space for education, practice
and research, while continuing its efforts to foster professional musicians.
In 2012, the renowned violinist Chung Kyung-wha was appointed as a distinguished professor, and the music library, which is the first of its kind in
Korea, houses a wide range of literature, first editions, and digital and audiovisual materials.
Heading into the 21st century, the College of Music aims to develop traditional Korean culture and arts and contribute to the creation of global, comprehensive arts and culture, while providing quality education and producing
accomplished Korean musicians.

ewha, where change begins
With the increasing importance of quality of life and the advent of an aging society, modern society is seeking a new paradigm in the field of health
sciences. In 2007, Ewha was the first university to establish a College of Health
Sciences with the aim of leading this new approach to health in the 21 st century by fostering medical professionals who can respond to social demands
and by researching and developing programs to meet this end. The preceding
departments of Home Economics (1929), Physical Education (1945), Nursing
(1955) and Health Education (1963), as the first of their kind in Korea, served as
the matrix for the current Ewha College of Health Sciences.
The College takes the lead in research and development to improve the
quality of life of the human community and to prepare for an aging society. To
help aspiring students who wish to pursue careers as health specialists in connection with health education, courses combine theory and practice across
related professional fields. Students are educated on the fundamentals before
embarking on interdisciplinary studies in order to enable them to carry out
combined research. In addition, through industry collaboration, the college
emphasizes practical experience by providing on-site training, developing
cooperative programs with local communities and national and public health
institutions, and inviting adjunct professors from among leading health professionals.
Ewha’s College of Health Sciences has produced a total of 357 professors
(192 in nursing science, 50 in human movement studies, 88 in nutritional science & food management, and 27 in health education & management), more
than any other university in Korea, and is working to fulfill its role as the foundation of health sciences in Korea.

It was a dream
many deemed impossible
but Ewha made it real.
A dream in pursuit
of hope and glory for all
achieved through faith and will.
The future will lead Ewha
further into the world
and closer to this dream.
