It serves not merely as a name of this time-honored institution but as a symbol of the tradition and spirit of women’s education in Korea. The wisdom of knowledge, the virtue of goodness and the harmony of beauty make up the three pillars of education at Ewha, dedicated to nurturing both intelligence and character in our students. Pursuing the common good for all mankind as a world-class university Ewha Womans University originated from Ewha Haktang, founded in May 1886 by Mary F. Scranton, an American missionary from the Methodist Episcopal Church. As Korea’s first educational institution for women, Ewha pioneered new frontiers for women to lead more humane lives, and guided its students toward a path of compromise and contribution, of giving back to society the benefits they received through education. It was Scranton’s goal to foster, through an education based on Christian values, better Koreans. Ewha’s first students were daughters from poor families, some deprived of shelter or care. Education brought about rapid and enormous changes to their lives and ways of thinking. Esther Park, whose maiden name was Kim Jeom-dong, was Ewha’s fourth student who, after studying medicine in the U.S., became Korea’s first female physician, devoting her life to mission work and free medical service. Numerous other graduates from Ewha’s early years contributed to the effort toward Korea’s independence from Japanese occupation and national advancement. Ewha today remains just as dedicated to the teaching of not only knowledge but the importance of social contribution. The students are taught to pursue their dreams and achieve success through education, and to use their success to help build a better future for mankind. Peace, prosperity and humane living are the universal ideals shared around the world. Ewha, as an international institution with a history spanning 126 years, is dedicated to contributing to the world at large. Ewha was founded by a woman and has developed into the world’s largest women’s university in the hands of women, educating some of Korea’s most talented and outstanding women. From the start, Ewha was conceived as an international effort and its history is a record of the pursuit of the common good for all mankind. We at Ewha are determined to continue to bring about change as we move towards the future, towards higher achievement and contribution. 2 ewha womans university Chang Myong-Sue President Ewha Haktang Educational Foundation ewha, where change begins 3 Global hub for women’s education Embarking on a new path toward becoming a global leader in women’s education Nurturing women leaders rooted in the Christian virtues of knowledge, goodness & beauty The humanization of women is Ewha’s founding mission, which has served as the driving force behind our history and growth. Based on the Christian virtues of knowledge, goodness and beauty, this mission makes up the core of our spirit in the pursuit of our vision in education. Kim Sun-Uk Ewha’s origins date back to May of 1886 when classes began with a single student, launching a proud, unprecedented history in the education of Korean women, achieved through challenge and devotion. Its history is a record of remarkable growth into the world’s oldest and the biggest institution for women’s education, paving the path not only for the women of Korea but from around the world. The world we live in today is one that propels endless competition. We at Ewha plan to confront this new environment through changes driven by the spirit that we have inherited, based on sharing and service, on compassion and justice. Ewha stands at a crucial turning point, faced with new challenges. We are determined to turn these challenges into new opportunities that will open the door to exciting new changes, to build an institution that is equipped for world-class education and research; that seeks future paradigms rooted in new values of femininity; that leads fearlessly into an adventurous future of experimentation and challenge; that strives to define and execute new social responsibilities of the university for our times. Ewha hereby takes its first step toward its new role as an international hub for women’s education. I hope to bring new changes that will allow Ewha to serve women from around the world, to realize their dreams and to explore new opportunities. For 126 years Ewha has strived for the humanization of women, a vision that is spreading fast to every corner of the world, one that we will continue to uphold into the future. I sincerely ask for your support and encouragement as we confront our challenges on our path toward change. I pray for God’s blessing for everyone we encounter as we realize our vision of Ewha. 4 mission University Leadership University Leadership vision For 126 years Ewha has strived for the humanization of women, a vision that is spreading fast to every corner of the world. The importance of liberal arts, nevertheless, has not diminished, for they lay a broad foundation that enriches life and learning. Ewha has traditionally stressed liberal arts education. Diverse approaches to liberal arts education have been put to the test over the years with the aim of developing students’ intellects and building them up as members of Ewha. And now Ewha is planning new changes for the new era. Starting in 2013, liberal education at Ewha will focus on fostering creative thinkers who embrace Ewha’s values of sharing and communication to lead the global era of the 21st century. First, required courses in the liberal arts, such as “Indepth Reading and Writing” and “Sharing Leadership,” will be created, and foreign language education will be strengthened to improve students’ multidisciplinary reasoning abilities and communication skills. Second, Ewha will offer core courses in the liberal arts to improve student insight into the humanities, artistic ability, scientific and ecological thought, global leadership, and general research skills. Ewha is committed to fostering students who have a strong sense of empathy and communication skills based on character and open-mindedness, students who will pursue Ewha’s defining values while displaying outstanding leadership. First implemented in the U.K. at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, the RC system has been a model for undergraduate education in prestigious universities in the U.S., including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. In residential colleges, dormitories are not only student residences but also educational space. Students in residence, who live and eat together, are offered a range of educational opportunities to develop their character, creativity and leadership in this newly created space for advanced education. Ewha’s RC will continue the tradition of Ewha Haktang, Korea’s first residential college, and serve as a community and an education venue for future talents. By living and learning together and carrying out social tasks as a community rather than as isolated individuals, freshmen will gain valuable experience. And by providing practical advice on such topics as course selection and academic planning, mentors—who will include the dean of the RC, faculty advisors, counselors, and upperclassmen—will help incoming students plan their future while feeling at home at Ewha. The RC will play a pivotal role in producing global citizens who embrace Ewha’s core values. 22 Support system to foster excellence Residential College An immersive style of total education in which students and professors reside together and engage outside of the classroom in volunteer work and cultural experiences, the RC’s purpose is to foster students who will put “us” before “me.” ewha womans university Ewha Care Net (ECN) provides close support to all Ewha students, on a wide range of issues from coursework to employment and career planning. Student health, academic performance, and career planning are managed systematically through organic cooperation among the Ewha Language Center, Career Development Center, Student Counseling Center, and University Health Service Center. Ewha also provides generous scholarships so students can concentrate on their studies without excessive financial worry. Over KRW 200 billion has been raised for scholarships, three times more than the previous reserve, and more scholarships will be awarded by expanding the budget by KRW 1 billion each year. In addition, in order to ensure that Ewha graduates continue to succeed after graduation, the Career Quotient, run by the Career Development Center, offers a wide range of support to students: quality education; career counseling; employment information; mediation between job applicants and potential employers; career management after employment; career-related research and publications; one-on-one career counseling with personnel managers in major companies; recommendation for internships; and career development guidance. ewha, where change begins 23 Ewha Global Top 5 Project Strengthening Research Capacity Seeking advancement in 5 research areas to global standards by 2020 Ewha Global Frontier Support for research in areas of outstanding competitive edge Ewha Global Top 5 Project to support world-class research Ever since Ewha Haktang first broke the taboo against women’s education in Korea and took in its first student in 1886, Ewha has been setting the pace for women in science in Korea by producing the first female scientist and founding the first women’s hospital. Since the summer of 2000, the Ewha Volunteer Group has participated in a number of volunteer activities both at home and abroad to provide education, construction, and medical aid to those in need, thus putting into practice Ewha’s Christian founding spirit of neighborly love. The Beautiful World Made by Ewha event, launched in 2001 and hosted by the Volunteer Center, holds a range of different programs, such as making and distributing kimchi for the winter, a walk-a-thon, programs for children from multiethnic families, raising donations for scholarships, and helping the underprivileged in the local community. Seonbae Ramyeon This campaign started with the idea that a small donation from each alumna would be enough to create a scholarship fund. To date, 2,255 Ewha alumnae have donated over KRW 1.76 bil.
