Holiday Scavenger Hunt
What better way to prepare for the holiday season than running around the school with a bunch of
peers playing games!
On Friday, December 18, the Middle School Leadership organized a Holiday Scavenger Hunt for all
middle school students. Events ranged from holiday Pictionary and trivia, to Candy Cane Limbo,
and a snowball fight (dodge ball). Teams were required to run around from station to station completing as many tasks as possible in the designated 25
minutes. Students decorated their own ornaments and
cookies, accessorized themselves for a festive photo, and
played musical chairs.
Overall, the level of enthusiasm was very high and students enjoyed the competition. Congratulations
to the group of girls from Mr. John’s grade 8 class who won the scavenger hunt. Thank you to the
teachers for running the stations and to MS Leadership for spreading holiday cheer and school spirit
during a busy time of year!

EXAMS… EXAMS… EXAMS…
For many of our Middle School students, the mention of EXAMS raises anxiety levels and increases stress. You may see some of the effects of
this additional stress at home. This time of year can be difficult not only for kids, but for parents! You may remember
your personal experiences of exams, or worry that your child is not studying enough or “the right way”. Your anxiety will
most often add to your child’s stress. Remember you are playing the role of a LIFEGUARD in your child’s education. In
Middle School, you are no longer swimming in the pool next to them, but rather on the side of the pool monitoring them,
available to assist as needed.
Here are a few tips to help you and your child through the next few weeks!








Review the exam schedule with your child and put the dates of exams on the family calendar.
Assist your child in organizing their “study space”
Ask your child questions, rather than telling them what to do. Share your experiences of exams, including study strategies that worked for
you, recognizing that your child’s learning style may be very different.
Ensure that your child has enough sleep and is eating healthy.
Prevent overscheduling during the next few weeks. Talk to your child about perhaps cutting back on extracurricular activities if they are
feeling overwhelmed.
Encourage your child to take breaks from their studying - Vitamin D is important for a healthy brain!
Assist them in scheduling “study time” free from distractions (brothers, sisters, electronics)
Plan something fun for the weekend following exams. Research has shown that students who have something to look forward to, following intense studying/exams, perform better!
Encourage your child to come and see me if they are experiencing excessive stress or anxiety. I’m here to help!
