Purchasable Resources for Social Studies
Grades 6 & 7
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has received numerous requests for Middle
Grades Resources to support the new Essential Standards for sixth and seventh grades. Since these
standards have undergone the most significant transformation in terms of content coverage, coupled
with the fact that Social Studies is not slated for textbook adoption until the 2016-2017 school year,
the K-12 Social Studies Section has been given permission to post a list of purchasable resources that
various schools, districts, and other states may be using or have used that correlates to the content
that may be taught in the new Standard Course of Study for grades 6 and 7. This is not a
recommended list, an exhaustive list nor even a suggestion that you use a textbook at all given the
current direction and availability of free online resources. You will have to use your discretion in
electing to purchase these resources. We suggest that you follow set criteria for resource evaluation
i.e. the NC textbook adoption criteria when making a selection.
Please note: The Curriculum and Instruction Division does not coordinate the textbook process and
this is in no way intended to usurp that process.
