The success story of how starting to increasing the milk production & lead to integrated dairy farm in North-East
Mother Dairy, Jorethang (South Sikkim) is a towards
revolutionary step in Dairy Farming by Govt of Sikkim in
North East with a pilot project for increasing the milk
production in Sikkim. Established in 2013. Sikkim
Government was always planning for increasing the milk
production in Sikkim. They decided to set up a modern
dairy farm in Sikkim and start with first modern dairy farm
in Jorethang (South Sikkim) under the Deptt. Of
AH,LF&VS ,Govt of Sikkim.

kms from Jalpaiguri,West Bengal.
Mother Dairy is inaugurated by Shri R.B.Subba (
Ministry of Road & Bridges, Govt. of Sikkim) in the
presence of Shri. Dawcho Lepcha (Ministry of AH,LF&
VS,Govt. of Sikkim) & Shri Madan Century (MLA, South
Sikkim) on 30th September’2013.
The vision was to give quality product to state and hence
instead of building a cooperative base like some of other
cooperative dairies, he decided to start with root level i.e.
Dairy Farming. Govt. of Sikkim initiated with a pilot
project of 100 cross bred cows with the best possible
automation and technical inputs from DeLaval, who are
global leaders in Milking solutions for the last 135 years.
And also they will setup the big size of project for
increasing the milk production and giving the good
learing to the North-East people, who are interested to
set-up a modern dairy farm in this region.

This organized farm provides focus on animal comfort.
Cows are not tied; hence they are free to move. They
get specially formulated feed from a feed management
system by DeLaval and are monitored closely for their
activities with the help of a special software by DeLaval.
Milking is done in a fully automated milking parlour and
milk is sent untouched through pipeline to the Bulk Milk
Cooler. After cooling, it goes into a Cooling Van to their
Processing Plant.
After successful operation and learnings, Govt. of
Sikkim will expand the project and will setup a modern
dairy farm in all district of Sikkim under the Deptt. Of
AH,LF & VS for producing the quality milk.
The new automated 2X8/8 Herringbone Midline Parlor & Operated by
Dr. Tilak Gathane( Dy. Director, AH LF & VS, Jorethang)at the Mother
Dairy Farm by DeLaval.
The temptation for new technology, labour challenges,
need from buyers for good quality milk, high milk yield
and pollution-sanitation rules were the motivations tostart
with concept of this large commercial farm.
Mother Dairy is an excellent example of how
diversification into an unrelated area with expertise from
world’s best resources leads to excellent results.
