FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter will explain about the main issue of the research that is
implicit meaning on Evanescence’s songs, and what kinds of figurative languange
has been classified.
4.1
Findings
There are several kinds of figurative languange was founded on the lyrics
song after I read it. Those are, personification, hyperbole, metaphore, apostrophe,
simile, synecdoche, irony, and paradox, but almost found was personification and
hyperbole. Also in this part, I explored and classified figurative languange which
found in lyrics for every title.
4.1.1 Personification
Personification is figure of speech that regarding something death, could
acts and has feeling like human.
In “My Immortal” personification was founded in :
1. I'm so tired of being here, suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave, I wish that you would just leave
Your presence still lingers here and it won't leave me alone
2. There's just too much that time cannot erase
3. You used to captivate me by your resonating light
Now, I'm bound by the life you left behind

4.1.2 Hyperbole
Hyperbole is a kind of figurative languange that tell something beyond the
truth and real condition. Hyperbole is overstatement about something.
Hyperbole in “My Immortal” was founded in :

When you’d scream, I’d fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years

4.1.3 Metaphore
Metaphore is a kind of figurative languange which comparison something to
implied the facts.
Metaphore on “My Immortal” was founded in :

Now, I'm bound by the life you left behind

Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me
There is no metaphore on “Sweet Sacrifice” and “Bring Me to Life”

4.1.4 Appostrophe
Appostrophe is figurative languange that regard someone or something absent
is present. On three lyrics songs, only “Sweet Sacrifice” has appostrophe and
occurs in lyric :

4.1.5 Simile
Simile is figure of speech which compare something by using ‘as’, ‘like’,
etc. On three songs, only occurs on “Bring Me to Life” Lyric in :
How can you see into my eyes like open doors?
Leading you down into my core where I've become so numb
4.1.6 Synecdoche
Synecdoche is figure speech that use a part of something to explain the
whole. Synecdoche only founded on “Sweet Sacrifice” lyrics occurs in :
One day I’m gonna forget your name,
And one sweet day, you’re gonna drown in my lost pain
4.1.7 Irony
Irony is figure speech which tell the opposite situation.
Irony was founded on “Sweet Sacrifice” occur in:

Paradox is a kind of figure speech which describe two different condition,
but both either true.

That’s all classification of the three songs has been chosen is done. The
function of that classification is to make clearer the use of figurative languange on
the songs’ lyrics, as the reflection of implicit meaning on Evanescence’s songs.
4.2 Discussion
After we classified the figurative meaning in the songs above, in this
session, this research has discussed and interpreted about implicit meaning in
songs lyrics.
To be clearer, this research presents the data interpretation as the evidence
of the research about implicit meaning. This session also explain more further the
sentences which has been classified above.
4.2.1 Implicit Meaning on “My Immortal”

My immortal is one of five songs in
Evanescence wrote firstly and
nominated in the grammy award categorize the best performance 2005. On my
immortal, I have founded some kinds of figurative languange in several sentences
of the lyrics.
“I'm so tired of being here, suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave, I wish that you would just leave
Your presence still lingers here and it won't leave me alone”
Bold line above, is using personification, that regard the author is supress
by the childfish fears. Childish fears means a reasonable fears. The author feels so
tired with that condition, but he couldn’t avoid the shadow of the someone and
linger in his arround. Personification used to emphasize how someone always
present in author’s mind and seems like will not leaving.
“These wounds won’t seem to heal, this pain is just to real”
Bold line above, is paradox sentence, which tell two different conditions,
but either true. The authors feels so hurt and painfuly while the wounds seems not
gonna hurt.
“There’s just too much that time cannot erase”
The use of personification in sentence shown in bold. Logically, time is a
noun that can not erase anything. In the lyric above, wrote that time can not erase,
it is regard that there must be something which can erased by time. But in fact,
explain that so many something (may be mean memories or things) that could not
just forgotten.

The stanza above, is using personification and metaphore, because, in the
lyric tell that resonating light captivate the authors, while captivate means
interested. While, resonating light is an abstract noun that can not captivate
something except in literature utterance. It means that, someone who used to
interested or captivate the author with something like ‘aura’ or spirit, but not now
anymore. Next, life is just human living process, and described can bound the
author. So I determined it personification, which is mean the author is living
without the someone anymore.
“Your face it haunts my once pleasent dreams” is metaphore sentence. It means
someone is the one who always present in author’s dreams. Author couldn’t forget
the someone, even the someone face like always haunts in every dreams. Then,
“your voice, it chased away all the sanity in me” is determined as
personification, because voice is sound, and sound couldn’t run after someone like
human or animal. While author feels it chased his sanity. Implicitly it means that
author always feel like always see the someone face even like chased away his
sanity. The authors always could hear the someone’s voice so he said in the song
that the someone voice chased away all the sanity in the author.
Next stanza contain hyperbole, let us see :

Author tell an overstatement taht beyond human’s capability. Logically,
we couldn’t do all the author tell above. The meaning of hyperbole sentences
above is, the author want to always present and be there wherever his someone
stand. The author wants to be always help the someone in any condition.
To make it clearer, let us see the whole of lyric song entitle “my immortal”
firstly.

My Immortal is a song tell about experience in love, but they decide to
separate. Their love has broken by something, but author still couldn’t forget the
memories and always spend time to imagine it. In his loneliness, author always
remember about the girl and their memories.
In this song, author actually wants to be together, he tries to establish his
love, but he is hurt. While, the girl used to captivate, and they love each other.
Author wants to be always be there for the girl, but now, they are separated. He
try so hard to forget, but couldn’t. My immortal refers to the girl is the someone
who is so hard to forget. And always come in author’s mind.

4.2.2 Implicit Meaning on “Sweet Sacrifice”
Sweet sacrifice is one of song in open the door albums which is the most
famous songs in 2006 which sold more than five million copies. On sweet
sacrifice lyric, I found five kinds of figurative languange, and has classified.
“Fear is only in our minds, but it’s taking over all the time.”
Paradox sentence determined from the implied menaing. Author tell that
“fear is only in our minds” but why it is taking over all the time? Both of
sentences either tell the truth what the author’s feeling, but in different condition.
The author actually describes something he scared, and even he spend almost his
time to feel it.
“Sweet sacrifice”
Next of lyric which contain irony. Sacrifice means the thing offered.
Sweet sacrifice refers to a hard thing to forget someone who has hurt us, it is hard
to just forget someone, but after that the author feels happy.
“one day I’m gonna forget your name”
The underlined sentence use synecdoche. The word “Name” actually
refers to the someone not only just the name, but also whole of the someone it
self. The sentence above implied meaning of author wants to forget the someone
who has hurt him.
“and one sweet day, you’re gonna drown in my lost pain”

The next line determined as irony for the girl. Author said that when “one
sweet day” but ironicly the girl will drown or dissapear with his pain that his tries
to forget.
“And oh you love to hate me don’t you, honey?”
In this line, the author seems like talking with someone, but in fact he just
regads that the someone present, while absent. Author tell that he knows and
believes that the someone always hate him.
“I live in darkness
I sleep to die,

The authors use overstatement to describe his feeling. How we can live in
darkness while we have sun, and lamps to light it on. Hyperbole sentences above
explain about painfuly when the author still with the someone. Like gonna die,
seems like lost his life. The author is unhappy.
“Our burning ashes blacken the day”
Ashes are noun that couldn’t even to blacken anything especially day.
Personification here is to show that if the author still join with the someone even
seem like to black out the day. So dark and so sad.
“A world of nothingness, blow me away”
The next lyric classified in paradox, because the author describes a place
but nothing inside, but it can blow him away. Implied meaning inside is the author
feels like nothing and empty.

Sweet sacrifice is a song which talking about how the author feel so hurt
when someone hate him. The author wants to be far away, and regards that his
pain will end. The author feels that he is so broken if he still with that one. This
song describes a hate feeling to someone who always treat him cruel and acting
innocently. The someone maybe does not realize the mistake his/ her made. Thus
why the author wish a sweet day to forget the one, and wants dissapear with his
pain.
Sweet sacrifice refers to the authors offered something to run away from
someone and his pain, sweet sacrifice means that a good sacrifice to be free. The
author regards that when he separate and forget the someone, he will be free and
live happy. So that’s why his sacrifice called “sweet sacrifice” a sacrifice to get a
sweet life.
4.2.3 Implicit Meaning on “Bring Me to Life”
Bring me to life is a famous song which is nominated in The Best Song
nomination in 2003 and won at 2004 for the same nomination. At the findings
session, this research found four kinds of figurative languange on ‘Bring Me to

Life’, they are ; simile, personification, hyperbole, and paradox. Let us see the
interpretation of the figurative languange on the song and the explanation below.
At the first song’s lyric written :
“How can you into my eyes like open doors
Leading you down into my core where I’ve become so numb”
The first lyrics above is determined as simile sentences because as we
know before, simile is comparison subject using ‘like’, ‘as’, and etc. But
sentences not determined to show how someone could see like open door, but the
author is wondering how can someone does understand about him clearly even
like door which is opened. So clearly, so the someone understand what the author
feels and the main problem he has.
“without a soul, my spirit sleeping somewhere cold
Until you find it there and lead it back home”
The next lyrics determined as personification where the author describes
his spirit is sleeping (sleep is what human often do where condition of the body
and mind such as recurs regularly even night in which the eyes are closed) in
somewhere cold. Implied meaning of this sentence is, the author feels like
emptyness, in cold place. As listener, we can understand by this song what
meaning the author purposes. He feels so empty like his spirit is sleeping. “until
you find it and lead it back home” still contain personification, because what thing
can back home just such human or animal, not noun like spirit. Hence, this
sentence determined in personification. The meaning of this sentence is still
related with previous sentence. “without a soul, my spirit sleeping somewhere

cold, until you find it and lead it back home” the author describes how his feelings
so empty but someone come and acts like give his spirit back and the author feels
like the spirit back to him again, he feels his life again not emptyness anymore.
“wake me up
Bid my blood to run...”
Still talking about personification which regards something death acting
like human. Run is what human do to move steps quickly. But in lyrics the author
mentions that his blood bid to run. In this case, the implicit meaning of run is not
blood has a foot and running make steps moving fastly, but the author ask
someone to wake him up, not because the author is sleeping, but he asked to
someone to make him feels life anymore and in order his blood can flows or run
again normally, because he feels so down, and stuck.
“frozen inside without your touch
Without your love, darling
Only you are the life among the dead”
By looking this sentence, even people felt something so over to tell. Thus
why this sentences are determined in hyperbole. The meaning of this sentences is
the author feels so freeze and cool, he expected the someone always support him,
because he feels he is gonna freeze if the someone does not. The author regards
that he just has that someone for his life to support him so mentioned in lyric
“only you are the life among the dead” .Although the author mentions “darling”
on the sentence but it is not an apostrophe because he didn’t call but just want to
emphasize whom he talks to. Let us see the next lyrics.

The next lyrics, are determined in paradox. Where the author describes
two different condition, he feels kept in dark but in fact the someone is in front of
him. Implied meaning on the lyrics is what the author feels like blind, couldn’t see
just kept in dark until he realizes that there is someone in front of him, that can
support him.
Furthermore, let us see the hyperbole more founded in the next lyrics.

If you feel something so over in the lyrics sentences above, that is why it is
determined as hyperbole. How someone can been sleeping a thousand years, and
can open eyes to everything? That is the hyperbole point on that. But implicit
menaing is underlined meaning which expressed deeply from the sentence. The
lyrics mean that the author feels so damn, so numb like sleeping thousand years,
and the someone wake him up and then the author can see every truth in his life.
Wake him up in this case, is not same with when we make someone awakened.
But means to make realize what really happend on surroundings.
Bring me to life is the hits song until now. After we know what kinds of
figurative languange which covered it, now let us talking about what is implicit

Almost kinds of figurative languange shown in the lyrics above is
hyperbole and personification, where the author describes what he feels though
this song. When we listen for the first time, it will make us being curious before
find out the meaning inside.
This song talking about what the author felt before he met with someone.
He felt that he is so numb and his spirit is sleeping in darkness so he coludn’t see
any truth, he got a lot of problems, maybe broken heart and he needs someone to
give a faith and supports to him in order he feels like reborn. The author tell that
he is wondering how someone could understand so deeply about his feelings, and

then the author expected that someone can save him, and bring him feels like alive
again. Because at the previously condition the author felt so empty, undone, and
dark. The author also hope that he will get a good life anymore. He needed
someone to support him until the someone came and give support and understand
what he is feeling.
This song describes someone who is scare that will be nothing until the
end of life, also describe someone who feeling so empty and going to be undone
person. The author ask someone to wake him up in order he can feel like reborn
and feel his blood run in his body, feeling save and something more.
