C. Embryonic Day 10: the 3 primary brain vesicles
During the course of e10 the lateral edges of the neural plate fuse dorsally to form the
neural tube, with its three primary brain vesicles. Three series of sections for this age are
presented. Two series are from early on e10, at a time when the hindbrain roof plate has formed,
but the lateral edges of the presumptive forebrain neural plate have not yet fused (10-13 somite
stage). One of these series consists of 8 approximately transverse sections from a single embryo,
and the other series consists of two approximately horizontal sections from embryos of slightly
different ages (10 and 13 somites). The third series consists of approximately transverse sections
through two embryos where the rostral neuropore had closed, and thus the forebrain vesicle was
present. No mantle layer is present at this stage of development.
