Students will examine strategies aimed at reducing crime and developing pro-social behavior. Course Goals: Students will learn: - History and Background of the Juvenile Justice System - Case work practices related to juvenile justice - Assessment and intake strategies for interviewing youth - Professionalism, ethics, and boundaries - Best practices in juvenile justice - Issues and strategies for working with youth with substance abuse issues Grading Criteria: 25 pts = Participation, and short assignments. 25 pts = Community observation – ten observation hours and descriptive paper due by week 10 st 25 pts = 1 Mid-term – week 5 (take home and due week 6) 25 pts = 2nd Mid-term – week 10 (take home - due Tuesday of finals week at the SAPP office) 90 – 100 = A 80 – 89 = B 70 – 79 = C 60 – 69 = D 59 & below = F General Expectations: Attend class regularly, complete reading as assigned, participate in class discussions and exercises, and complete all assignments. Student Attendance Expectations: Attendance is mandatory and participation will make up 25% of the grade. Short assignments may be given in class and will be part of the participation requirement. Community Observation: Ten hours of observation. Minimum two page descriptive paper due week 10 at the beginning of class. More details in class. Week 2: Introduction to the history of juvenile justice in the United States and the current juvenile justice system. -Brief history -Legal Cases Week 3: The System - How the system works - Court Terminology - The role of victims in juvenile justice -Measure 11 Week 4: Introduction to probation casework - Assessing risk in youth - Developing a case plan Week 5: Continued casework discussion - Resources in system Supervising youth on probation Week 6: Competency Development -Options to Anger Week 7: Continued Competency Development - The place of competency development in juvenile justice - Specific skills taught Week 8: Joining with other agencies - The benefit to working with outside agencies Referrals to the community Week 9: A Youth’s Story - A youth will share their experiences in the juvenile justice system Week 10: Summary and Wrap-up Assignment: Observation hours must be completed and two-page minimum paper submitted describing hours, their applicability to class, and general impressions
