Chapter7 Motivation in Hospital and Health care Motivation is derived the Latin word ”Movees” which means to move An urge arising out of motives or needs that impels an indivisual to behave and act to fulfill those needs or desire and goals. Meaning and significance of Motivation Motivation is one of the most important factors determining organizational efficiency Motivation is of particular significance in hospital both for doctors and staff and results in job satisfaction and lead to high moral support from staff Theories 0f Motivation The behavior of an individual at a particular moment is usually determined by strongest need. Under this premise, Maslow proposed an interesting need hierarchy theory. He classified the human needs into five categories, such as basic need, safety need, social need, esteem needs and self actualization need Mc Clelland’s Theory of Achievement Need A person with a high need for achievement sees problems and obstacle as challenges to be met and is motivated to take them. He maintains a high level of performance and persists in problem solving Herzberg Two Factor theory of motivation The two factors motivation theory of Frederick Herzberg talks about motivators and satisfiers Herzberg identified two sets of factors are causing either satisfaction or dissatisfaction Vroom’s expectation Theory Expectancy theory of Victor Vroom is one of the significant Process theories of motivation The expectancy theory tells people make choice over future plan of the extent to which a given behavior will lead to desired benefit. Adam’s Equity Theory of Motivation Equity can be defined individual’s belief that he or she is being treated fairly relative to the treatment of others A person’s perception of equity develops through a four step process shown Motivating employees of hospital The mangers of medical institutions trying to enhance the motivation of their employees can of course draw ideas from any of the theories of motivation Organizational rewards can affect indivisual attitude, behavior and motivation Importance of Motivation in hospital The self, the job ,the reward ,the leadership etc all motivate employee Hospital administrator must take cognizance of factors of job satisfaction in their effort to motivate staff to carry out something extra ordinary
