Rec-Plex | Home of the Champions
Meet the Rec-Plex’s IRONMAN
distances. “It’s my least
favorite thing to do, but I
call it a necessary evil,”
he said.
While Marc didn’t
foresee himself doing
another triathlon after
that first one, he began to
embrace the challenge.
Why run when you hate to
do it? Marc’s reasoning:
“If you can do something
you don’t want to do, everything else comes easy.” Plus, he likes the way
his body has transformed through his endurance training.
We’re used to writing about people who’ve had success at the St. Peters
Rec-Plex, from regular customers who turned their life around by getting fit
or an athlete or a team that won a championship.
This time, we get to write about a Rec-Plex staff member who completed
an amazing accomplishment after enduring a tough and painful setback.
Marc Daigle, Recreation Supervisor at the Rec-Plex, completed an Ironman
triathlon when he swam 2.4 miles, rode 112 miles on his bike and then
ran a full 26.2 marathon at The Woodlands, Texas, earlier this year.
The accomplishment was made all the sweeter considering that Marc
couldn’t complete his first attempt at an Ironman after he contracted
shingles, a condition that attacks the nervous system and causes severe
itching and boils on the skin. Marc’s battle with shingles last year started
six weeks before an Ironman event he signed up for in Lake Tahoe, Calif.
The illness took its toll on Marc, as he lost 10 pounds, missed two weeks
of work and lost all of the benefits of his training. “I could barely walk, let
alone sit on a bike or do anything physical,” Marc recalled. “Basically, it
erased everything I tried to do, everything I built up to. I was starting from
scratch two weeks before the event.”
Despite his health condition, and despite a cold front that brought
32-degree weather that morning of Sept. 22, Marc completed the swim
event at the Lake Tahoe Ironman event. And, he made it 85 miles through
the mountainous bike course, when his day ended because he missed a
cutoff time. He did not get to the final event, the marathon run.
“Mentally, I was there, but physically my legs weren’t moving that fast,”
he said. “I just didn’t have enough strength because I had shingles and
that was attacking my whole nervous system.”
Marc, 28, completed his first endurance event in June 2010. He started
with the Rec-Plex Spring Triathlon. In Marc’s position with the Rec-Plex, one
of his jobs is to oversee the facility’s triathlons and other races. He
decided to try it himself. “I was looking for something to challenge myself
both physically and mentally,” he said.
Marc said that the Rec-Plex is a great place for first-timers to try a
Triathlon, because it’s not as long as an Olympic triathlon, and the event
has flat land for biking and shady areas along the running course. It’s also
nice to have the swimming portion in a controlled environment inside the
Rec-Plex’s Olympic-quality Natatorium. (See accompanying story about the
Fall Triathlon and 5K Run on Sept. 28.)
While Marc loves swimming and biking, he despises running long
8
My Hometown stpetersmo.net
So, Marc did things he once never expected to do: longer
Olympic-distance triathlons, several marathons, two half-Ironman events …
and then the Ironman.
Eager to take another shot at an Ironman triathlon after his initial
setback, Marc signed up for the May event in Texas. This time around,
Marc employed the help of Rec-Plex personal trainer Ben Hendrix, who
developed some workouts to help Marc build up his core and flexibility.
Training wasn’t ideal due to the icy and snowy winter, and Marc didn’t run
as much as he would usually run, but he did a lot of strength training,
swam in the Rec-Plex pool, and trained for the bike event with RPX Cycling
classes at the Rec-Plex and by hooking his own road bike up to an indoor
trainer device at home.
Marc was nervous the morning of his second Ironman. A total of 18
friends and family members accompanied him to Texas, and he didn’t

Rec-Plex Success
A couple that lost more than 200 pounds to gain back their health. A man
at age 49 who swore he wouldn’t go up another pant size … and lost a
third of his body weight instead. A grandmother who gained strength so
she could keep up with the grandkids. A grandmother who purchased a
want to let them down. “And, I just wanted to prove to myself that I could
do this. But, it was a good nervous, the good butterfly feelings in your
stomach,” Marc said.
Because he didn’t get to really enjoy the first Ironman, Marc’s mantra for
this Ironman was: “Just have fun!” He saw some of his friends as he swam
through a canal at the end of the swimming leg, met with them briefly as
he prepared for the 112-mile bike ride, and later in the bike ride stopped
to talk with someone from his support group about every 10 miles. “It was
good mental relief to see family and friends,” he said.
Marc broke his personal record easily by completing the bike ride. The
marathon, his biggest challenge, remained. The Texas heat reached the
mid-80s as Marc took on his nemesis, long-distance running.
The 26.2-mile marathon was split into three laps. Marc felt good during
the first lap, but he hit a wall on the second lap. He still had about 17.5
Grandparent Family Pass to stay fit after heart surgery and spend more
time with her grandkids. A woman who turned from feeling low to feeling
happy while losing 75 pounds. Plus, many other people just like them have
improved their life at the Rec-Plex. Find your happy place here, too.
Membership options include month-to-month, one-year pass and
multiple-year passes (best value). There’s no joining fee!

miles to go, and decided he would power walk if he couldn’t run. Marc
couldn’t think about how many miles it would take to finish, but rather just
getting through the next mile to another aid station.
“Basically, I’d do anything I could to get to the next aid station,” Marc
said. Every stop, he’d eat cookies, pretzels or chips, drink water or vitamin
drinks, and shoot down a gooey substance that provided nutrition.
The best part of the run was that after the 23-mile marker, he could see
his friends and family members as the finish line neared, and some of
them ran with Marc for a quarter of a mile. As Marc reached the finish line,
about 14 hours after he began the day’s journey, he heard this sweet
announcement over the loud speaker:
Marc Daigle, from St. Charles, Missouri, you ARE an Ironman!
“I pounded my chest, clapped my hands and teared up a little bit,” Marc
said. And, he celebrated his triumph with friends and family.

St. Peters Performing Arts Studio
Helps Many Advance Music Talents
Have you always wanted
to learn to play an
instrument? Maybe you love
to sing, but need a little
fine-tuning and confidence.
Well, the answer is close to
home at the St. Peters Performing Arts
Studio located at the Cultural Arts Centre
inside City Hall.
Ron Jones and Randy Krueger,
co-owners of the St. Peters
Performing Arts Studio, are
certified music professionals
with more than 60 years of
combined experience. They
have dedicated their lives
not only to music
performance, but also to
teaching students the love
and appreciation of music.
After retiring from a career as a high school
choral director, Ron was ready for his next
adventure. He met Randy through a mutual
friend. At the time, Randy had his own music
studio, Creative Music, in O’Fallon. The pair
decided to join forces and open a music
and voice studio in the Cultural Arts
Centre.
The St. Peters Performing Arts Studio’s
piano methods are unique to those of other
studios. In the piano lab, traditional
techniques are taught, as well as Randy's
patented Piano Tabliture method.
“This method is unique in that a student will not come
in and spend 30 minutes on a piano bench pounding
keys,” Ron said. “Instead, the student will spend
approximately 10 minutes in each of three areas: computer
lab, traditional piano, and Tabliture. This method of teaching
piano has proven to be highly successful.”

Instruction in violin, saxophone and guitar are also offered at the
Performing Arts Studio. Each is open to all skill levels and a wide variety of
styles and techniques are taught. The guitar labs offer instruction in
various musical styles, and also in electric, acoustic and bass guitar.
The St. Peters Performing Arts Studio also offers quality vocal instruction
to beginning and advanced students. Learn classical vocal styles and
musical theater styles as well as vocal and proper singing techniques.
Members of the St. Peters Performing Arts Studio have had a lot of
success over the years at the Mid America Music Association’s annual
competitions. This competition has many events such as Solo Piano,
Theater Voice, Blues & Jazz Vocal, Piano Competitive and Solo Saxophone.
In addition to numerous other awards, St. Peters Performing Arts Studio
students have come in First, Second and Third Place in both the Junior
and Senior divisions for the past three years.
In addition to the MAMA competitions, St. Peters Performing Arts
Studio students perform in several recitals and other performing
opportunities throughout the year.
“All of our instructors have extensive performing backgrounds and
teach performance skills,” said Ron.
Instructors include:
•Ron Jones - Piano and Voice
•Randy Krueger - Piano and Saxophone
•Dan Turnbaugh Guitar, Piano and Voice
•Paul Hubert – Violin
•Kyle Work – Piano and Guitar
•Dr. Van Lees – Advanced Saxophone
•Kate Adams – Computer
•“Mr. Mikey M.” – Piano and Voice

From Our Police
Shooting Air Guns & Other Projectiles
The City of St. Peters has an ordinance that makes it illegal to discharge BB
guns and many other projectiles, unless you do it at an authorized location. This
includes BB guns, air guns, paintball guns and any pebble, bullet, slug or other
substance propelled by a sling, crossbow, rubber band or bow. Shooting
projectiles in your neighborhood puts people in danger. Kids under 18 also are
not allowed to possess an air gun, or any other similar gun.
370 Lakeside Park Archery Range
The City of St. Peters now offers an archery range at 370 Lakeside Park for a
convenient, affordable and safe place to practice bow hunting. Youth under 16
must be supervised by a responsible adult age 18 or older. Learn more and
read all of the archery range’s rules and regulations at
www.stpetersmo.net/archery-range.aspx.
National Rx take Back Event
Are you wondering what to do with unneeded or out-of-date medicines in
your home? You can bring them to the St. Peters Justice Center on Saturday,
Sept. 27, between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for safe disposal as part of the National Rx
Take Back Event. St. Peters police officers will accept prescription and
over-the-counter drugs during this time only in the Justice Center lobby. The
Justice Center is located at 1020 Grand Teton Dr., next to Mid Rivers Mall.
The U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Agency is coordinating the
National Rx Take Back Event. The St. Peters Police Department is participating
in the event because unused medication is a potential source of supply for
illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. By dropping
off your unused medicines, you eliminate the possibility of the drugs harming
someone else or getting into the wrong hands.
Police cannot accept any medications before or after the event, so be sure
to drop off your drugs between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
You can turn in medications that are out-of-date or medicines you no longer
need or use. Intravenous solutions, injectables and needles will not be
accepted. Illegal substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not
a part of this initiative. The service is free and anonymous.

National Night Out:
A Party with a Purpose
Here’s a way to make your neighborhood safer: Throw a party!
On Tuesday, Oct. 7, St. Peters will take part in the National Night
Out event from 6:30-9:30 p.m. You can invite St. Peters police to
visit your neighborhood party on National Night Out to help build a
stronger partnership. Your party can have any number of
activities—games, food, burn pits, or whatever seems like a fun
thing to do in early
autumn. Police
officers hand out fun
items to kids such as
stickers and coloring
books.
The idea behind
National Night Out is
to strengthen the
bond between
residents and police in
order to reduce crime. The better you know your neighbors, the
more likely you are to look out for each other and spot suspicious
activity. Working together and working with police can make a big
difference in stopping crime.
Call ext. 3550 at 636.477.6600 (AT&T customers) or
636.278.2244 (CenturyLink) to learn more or to request police
visits to your National Night Out party. You can learn more about
National Night Out at www.natw.org.

Hard to believe, but it’s already
our fourth year of hosting Celebrate
St. Peters at 370 Lakeside Park.
This year’s celebration at the lake
will take place the evening of Friday,
Sept. 19, and all day and night on
Saturday, Sept. 20. If you like great
Len Pagano
music, carnival rides, fireworks and
Mayor
tasty food, mark your calendars
and join us. If it’s anything like last year, it should be
another great time … and we’ll enjoy some more
beautiful sunsets over the lake!
This year, the Main Stage at Celebrate St. Peters 2014
will showcase outstanding talent that we can be proud to
say came from our very own Show Me State. KSHE 95
will present headliner Ozark Mountain Daredevils on
Saturday at Celebrate St. Peters 2014. Enjoy southern
and country rock from this Missouri-grown band that
exploded in the ‘70s with songs like “If You Wanna Get to
Heaven” and “Jackie Blue.” The Main Stage music
begins at 7 p.m. with classic rock favorites performed by
Super Jam, one of the St. Louis area’s best cover bands.
Powder Mill, another Missouri homegrown band, will
then open for Ozark Mountain Daredevils with their own
style of southern rock and country blues.
Music lovers, you don’t want to miss the entertainment
on Friday night, either. It begins on the Main Stage at
7 p.m. when young and talented local musicians from
School of Rock perform legendary rock ‘n roll songs.
The Chris Weaver Band will headline on Friday night with
a great mix of southern rock, soul and country blues.
We’re excited about this act, because Chris Weaver could
be one of those up-and-coming performers that you got
to see in St. Peters before he makes it really big.
We’ll also have a variety of music at the Celebrate
Stage on Saturday during the day beginning at 11 a.m.,
with a little something for everyone.
One change this year is that we’ll have our vendor area
closer to the Main Stage and the parking areas for your
convenience. (Vendors used to be near the end of the
festival grounds past the carnival rides). This year, you’re
going to see all of the food, business and craft vendors
as you enter the festival grounds. The Main Stage will still
be in the marina parking lot, although in a different
location a little closer to the carnival.
As always, we’ll have plenty to do for the entire family
at Celebrate St. Peters. The carnival rides at our
celebration are fun and affordable. You can purchase
carnival ride wristband vouncers in advance at a
discount at either St. Peters City Hall or the St. Peters
Rec-Plex during business hours through Sept. 18. We’ll
also have plenty of free activities for kids at Celebrate
St. Peters. The Home Depot will let kids build at its Kids
Workshop. We’ll have fun art projects for kids at Arty’s
My Hometown stpetersmo.net
Corner. The Community News Family Stage will also offer
plenty of fun family entertainment during the day on
Saturday.
Your family will want to stay to see the fireworks, too!
We’ll have a dazzling display over the lake after Powder
Mill’s set around 9 p.m.
Parking should be at a premium at 370 Lakeside Park,
especially on Saturday evening. In preparation, we’ve
created as many parking spots as possible and will have
free shuttle buses taking people to and from their cars
throughout the event. But, if you want to make sure that
you can park your car near the event grounds, we’re
giving you another chance to buy a Reserved Parking
Pass this year. People with the pass will be allowed to
come and go to a convenient, reserved parking area
throughout the event. These parking passes are on sale
at City Hall and the Rec-Plex now through Sept. 19.
You must buy them in advance—no parking passes will
be sold at the event.

My Hometown and at www.stpetersmo.net/celebrate.
Leaving a Legacy
Thousands of people die or suffer
needlessly each year due to a lack
of organ and tissue donors. A
transplant is often the only hope.
A while back, we had the privilege
of welcoming members of the Heart
Transplant Association of St. Louis
at our Board of Aldermen meeting.
If you missed it, you can still see
Judy Bateman
Board President their interesting presentation on
demand on our website at
sptvnow.net. Click on the “Board of Aldermen Meetings”
image and then click the video link to the Feb. 27, 2014,
Board of Aldermen meeting.
At the meeting, Tim Johnson described his heart
transplant experience nine years ago as “a very, very
frightening thing to go through.” I imagine that sums it up
for the more than 122,000 men, women and children
who are awaiting organ transplants right now in the
United States.
Another speaker at the meeting, Larry Bonds, informed
us that St. Peters is a little above the state when it comes
to registering. The state has 47% of the population
registered; St. Peters is at 53%. Mr. Bonds said that
raising that level up just 3% could save as many as 200
lives.
Vital organ donation is an option for people who have
been declared legally brain dead. One organ donor can
save the lives of eight people.
In addition to patients who suffer brain death, most
other deaths can be considered potential tissue donors.
One tissue donor can help up to 50 people.
A decision that you can make while you are alive is to
Continued on next page
t
be an organ and tissue donor. The result of your
decision may not occur for many years, but it
could ultimately save or enhance many lives.
Unfortunately, when the time to be a donor is
realized, a tragic situation will have happened
resulting in your death. This will be a terrible
time for your family and friends, which is why it
is very important to share your wishes with them
when you register to be a donor.
While most organ and tissue donations occur
after the donor has died, some organs and
tissues can be donated while the donor is alive.
Living individuals can donate one of their two
kidneys, and the remaining kidney provides the
necessary function needed to remove waste
from their body. Most living donations happen
among family members or between close
friends. A few years ago, my daughter-in-law
donated a kidney to a complete stranger.
The decision to say yes to organ donation is a
very personal one. If you think this is something
you would like to do, please join the Missouri
organ and tissue donor registry. Details can be
found at www.health.mo.gov/living/organdonor.
Next, be sure to inform your family of your
decision. And, finally, complete the back of your
driver's license.
I would like to end by sharing a quote I read
recently: “Without the organ donor, there is no
story, no hope, no transplant. But when there is
an organ donor, life springs from death, sorrow
turns to hope and a terrible loss becomes a
gift.”
Party at the Lake
I hope you have been
able to get out this
summer and enjoy our
beautiful 370 Lakeside
Park or one or more of our
other 24 parks.
Speaking of the lake, I
hope you will all be able to
Rocky Reitmeyer join me this year at

Once again, we’ll be bring
you lots of great entertainment, activities for the
kids, carnival rides, game booths, great food and
my personal favorite, fireworks over the lake!
The parking is free, and we’ll also have free
shuttles running to help you get from the parking
areas to the events. So, if you have bad knees
like mine, and a sore back, there is no reason
not to come out and enjoy a couple beautiful
days. You also have the option to purchase a
Reserved Parking Pass that will guarantee you a
parking spot close to the festivities for the entire
weekend. See pages 2-5 in this issue of My
Hometown to see all that the event has to offer.
Don’t forget to save all the aluminum cans for
the “Pennies for Patriots” program. Drop your
aluminum cans off at the west side of City Hall
in the specially marked brown dumpster and at
Recycle City in the big blue dumpster under the
American flag. All the money raised from these
cans goes to the USO at Lambert Field. The guys
and gals who are serving to protect our
freedoms stop there and depart from there. We
make this a home away from home and know
that we care about each and every one of them.
Please wish them well and when you walk up to
one of our soldiers please shake their hand and
tell them “thank you for serving our country.”

Shred It and Forget It
Saturday, Nov. 1, 9 a.m.-Noon
St. Peters residents have an opportunity to safely destroy unneeded documents by
bringing them to a large mobile shredder at the Health and Environmental Services (HES)
Operations Building from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Nov. 1. The HES Operations Building is
located at 135 Ecology Drive.
Simply place the documents you want to destroy in cardboard boxes and bring them to
the Health and Environmental Operations Building. Please make sure that the boxes are
not too heavy to lift. There is a limit of five boxes per vehicle. All of the shredded material
will be recycled, including the cardboard boxes if they are not needed back.
Do not bring computer discs or hanging file rods. If you can tear it, then you can shred it
using this service. The documents may contain staples or paper clips.
This service is free for St. Peters and Cottleville resident households only. Residents of
other communities may participate at a rate of $5 a box with a limit of five boxes. A box is
defined as a banker's box.

Unsightly trees
Have you ever looked out the window of your house or
out the car window when you’re driving around the City
and wondered what those big round growths are on the
stems of oak trees? These are called galls and the City
has been receiving many calls about them this year.
Perhaps you have noticed small clippings on the
ground below your oak tree. You’ve picked them up and
the next morning, the ground is loaded with more
clippings. The reason is that squirrels have been
clipping the ends of branches containing these galls and
then eating the gall after they fall to the ground leaving
behind what appear to be tiny corncobs.
The galls are caused by tiny, non-stinging wasps laying
eggs in the swelling buds of the tree. Small swellings
develop the following spring and grow over the next two
to three years.
While galls aren’t pretty, trees can live with a minor
infestation; however, some trees may be weakened and
possibly die because of the combination of
environmental stresses and excessive gall development.
Insects and predators like squirrels and woodpeckers
prey on the wasp larvae, which can help control their
spread. And, while it’s not practical to prune large
numbers of galls from a tree, it’s smart to rake and
destroy any that fall to the ground. Chemical treatment
has been shown to have no impact on the horned or
gouty oak gall.
Parks Director Vicki Phillips said, “Oaks are notoriously
strong trees. Otherwise-healthy trees should be able to
withstand the galls that have affected our area this
year.”
The best method to deal with galls is to keep your tree
healthy, watering frequently during the growing season
and feeding the tree with fertilizer. Late fall is the best
time to target your fertilizer.
Unfortunately, there is no solution to the twig gall
problem at this time, though it can be managed.

The City of St. Peters was recently awarded a grant from the St. Louis Jefferson
Solid Waste District for the purchase of Community Cardboard Containers.
“By placing the containers throughout the community, the public has easier access to recycle
cardboard,” said Alderman Don Aytes. This ready access, in turn, encourages more cardboard
recycling. Normally, a business has to pay a monthly fee to have a cardboard collection container
on their site, but under this new program a business can have a container at no cost as long as
they agree to allow the public to come onto their property and use the container to
recycle cardboard. “It’s a win-win for everyone,” said Alderman Aytes.
A list of container locations is located at www.stpetersmo.net.
St. Peters Investing $3 Million in Pavement Repairs in 2014
The City of St. Peters is making nearly
$3 million in pavement repairs in 2014.
Projects include asphalt overlay, concrete
slab replacements, curb repairs, joint and
crack repairs and sidewalk maintenance.
The 2014 Pavement Management
Program budget is broken down like this:
$1.2 million for concrete slab
replacement; $300,000 for curb repairs; $1.12 million for asphalt overlay; $30,000 for
joint repair; $146,000 for joint and crack sealing; and $200,000 for sidewalk infill and
repair.
Street repairs in St. Peters are determined by a pavement surface evaluation and rating
system that rates each street’s condition on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being highest). The
lowest-rated streets receive the highest priority for maintenance.
St. Peters has about 195 lane miles (36%) constructed of asphalt and another 353 lane
miles (64%) constructed of concrete.
Asphalt street repairs range from sealing cracks with a rubberized asphalt material,
patching potholes with asphalt material, to completely paving over the street with asphalt.
Damaged curbs are replaced first during asphalt overlay projects. A two-inch layer of
asphalt is removed using a milling process before the new surface is put down.
Concrete streets consist of a series of concrete slabs. Maintenance to concrete streets
includes sealing cracks and worn joints with a rubberized asphalt material, patching
potholes with asphalt, or completely replacing concrete slabs.
Similar to the process for concrete street repairs, the City of St. Peters regularly inspects
and repairs sidewalks.
Learn more about St. Peters’ annual pavement management program and find out which
streets are slated for repairs online at www.stpetersmo.net. Choose “Streets” from the
Departments pull-down menu.

City Offers Major
Appliance Recycling
The City of St. Peters is changing the way residential trash customers can dispose of
major appliances.
St. Peters residential trash customers are no longer required to make a trip to City
Hall or Recycle City to purchase “White Goods” tags for appliance disposal.
All the customer will need to do is call 636.970.1456 and choose option #1 to make an
appointment for collection.
The cost for curbside pick-up of a major appliance is $15. This charge will be placed on
your utility bill. The charge will appear in the following billing cycle so you should be aware
that it could be two to three months before the charge appears on your bill.
If you have unused “White Goods” tags, you have until the end of 2014 to use them.
Just let City staff know that you have a “White Goods” tag when you call to make
arrangements for pick-up of your appliance. City staff will instruct you on what to do.
Major appliances that DO NOT contain Freon such as washing machines, dryers, water
heaters, etc., may be placed at the curb at no additional charge on a regularly scheduled
quarterly bulky trash pickup. Call 636.970.1456 and choose option #1 to arrange for bulky
trash pickup or schedule online at www.stpetersmo.net.
Major appliances may also be dropped off at Recycle City. There is a $15 disposal fee for
Freon-based appliance such as a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, dehumidifier, etc.;
however, appliances that are not Freon-based may be dropped off at no charge.
For more information, please visit www.stpetersmo.net or call 636.970.1456 and choose
option #1.
