American Criminal Justice Association Lambda Alpha Epsilon Region IV Newsletter Volume 46, Issue 3 John Wilt, Editor & Publisher Fall / Winter 2013 President’s Report Nicci Young I hope this newsletter finds you all well and warm! Here in Pennsylvania we have been dealing with a blizzard for the last 30 hours or so, which just adds to 8 or so snowstorms we’ve experienced in the last 6 weeks. I’m sure all of you in Region IV have been dealing with much of the same and are looking forward to Spring like I am! The last time I saw many of you was at the Region IV conference in Delaware. Unfortunately, my health kept me away from the conference Teigan Nicole Young expect for the business meeting. During conference time I was 36 1/2 weeks pregnant and my blood pressure was through the roof. I recall being at home, my husband Mike taking my blood pressure every hour or so on the Saturday of the conference, in the hopes that it would come down and I could attend the seminar and closing banquet. Of course, that never happened and I made some tearful phone calls to Joe Walsh and Steve Atchley to give them the bad news. Not only was I upset that I couldn’t make it to Del Tech to see all of you, but I really just didn’t want to sit at home any longer, knowing you were all having such a great conference! I remember saying to many of you that I was “ready to go” despite having 3 1/2 weeks until my “official” due date of November 13th. Well, ready to go I was, and Mike and I welcomed Teigan Nicole Young on October 25, 2013, less than a week later! She arrived 19 days early via C-section looking just like her father (and nothing like me). Since October 25th our lives have forever changed and every day brings new and fun things that Teigan can do, say or recognize. Mike and I made it through many, many sleepless nights (and days!), maternity leave without pay, and adjusting to become a family of three. As of right now, she will be joining me at the National Conference in Kansas and I can’t wait for my LAE family to meet her! I would like to thank Dawn Bonavita and Lambda Omega for putting on an amazing regional conference in October. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to enjoy it, but I know everyone else had an amazing time! In This Issue I am working on contacting all the new chapters who have recently chartered. Please know that I am here for YOU- all chapters new and old- and anytime you need anything, please feel free to contact me. Email is the best method of contact at acjacops@gmail.com. I work shift work as a police officer, and along with a newborn baby many times my phone is off or I am sleeping at odd hours. I will do my best to get back to you in a timely manner and hopefully I can help you with whatever you may need. As always, I like to remind our members that if you graduate you can still remain a member of LAE as a member at large, professional member, or possibly (depending on your school) as a member of your collegiate chapter. I graduated in 2002 and have more than enjoyed my 12 years post graduation as a professional member of LAE and many of my closest friends I have met through LAE in those years since graduation. Hope you are all thawing out Region IV, and see you in Kansas! 1 President’s Report .......................................1 Vice President’s Report ...............................2 Region IV Conference.............................. 3-7 Pre-Registration Packet, Kansas City Overland Park Hotel, March 9-14, 2014 Chapter News Chi Omega Pi Sigma.................................... 8 delta chi omega......................................... 9 Omega Alpha Omicron........................... 10 PSI OMEGA.................................................... 11 Region IV Chapters & Contact Info..... 12-15 2013 Regional Conference................... 16-28 October 18-22, 2013 - Newark, Delaware Photo Gallery Vice President’s Report Joe Walsh Hi everyone! I hope that you are all enjoying 2014 so far. So far it’s been a good (but very cold) year. I’m looking forward to some warmer weather and the end of all the snow! Last year was very exciting. Jen and I got married in April. I was selected as Aston Township’s police officer of the year, accepted a new job as a county detective, and finished my master’s degree. It was nice seeing everyone at the regional conference. I would like to thank Lambda Omega for hosting the conference in Delaware. Thanks to everyone that helped make the conference successful! I’m looking forward to the upcoming national conference in Overland Park, Kansas. I hope to see you all there! Please contact me if there is anything I can do to assist you. 2 National Conference - American Criminal Justice Assoc. With members spanning several states, this can become somewhat difficult, but social media such as Facebook really helps members stay in touch. One of our members, Amber Dunphy, recently took a job as a crime scene tech in Durham, NC and members were able to send her well wishes and follow her move down south and keep in touch through social media. COPS is very proud of Amber and excited to hear about all the awesome things coming her way at her new job! In December, COPS hosted our annual holiday dinner at the Rock Bottom brewery in King of Prussia, Pa. We were blessed to have Ashley Wilkins, a longtime member of COPS join us this year. Ashley, along with her husband Ryan (both COPS members) have been based in California with the navy for the last several years and unable to take part in chapter activities. We are excited to have Ashley back on the easy coast, while her husband Ryan is deployed over seas. Keep Ryan in your thoughts and prayers for a safe deployment and return home! COPS hosted our annual scrapbook fundraiser in January and brought in over $700 to help members attend conference. Our members are looking forward to seeing you all in Kansas! 8 Chapter News Delta Chi Omega T The Delta Chi Omega Chapter Receives Awards he Delta Chi Omega Chapter at Ferrum College had an exciting fall semester. Nine members from the chapter, led by their new advisor Dr. Nicholson, attended the Region IV LAE Conference in Delaware where they won numerous awards including two first place trophies. Members in attendance included Logan Hodges (Chapter President), Victoria Bowman (Chapter Vice-President), Gretchen Whitlock (Chapter Secretary), Deserae Griffith, Carl Russell, Megan Getz, Kaye Woods, Ben Taylor, and Dylan Hodson. Select members from this group will be in attendance at the National Conference in Overland, Kansas in March of this year. While planning for these conferences, the Delta Chi Omega Chapter has also been heavily involved in their community. In October, the entire chapter participated in a food drive that benefited the local community’s food bank. In November, the club hosted their first annual “Substance Abuse Awareness Week” in which various speakers, events, and even a driving simulator were brought to campus to educate the students and community members about the detrimental effects of substance abuse. During this same month, chapter members also participated in a fundraising campaign for breast cancer research. This spring semester will be a very busy one for Delta Chi Omega as they will be organizing their second annual “Put Cuffs on Cancer” race. Funds from this race will benefit the American Cancer Society, as well as a local non-profit organization. The chapter has hopes to double their donation from last year’s race, which was $1300. Also, in February, the chapter participated in “Ferrum Feeds 50,000” in which over 55,000 meals were packaged and sent to starving children in foreign countries. Multiple other community service events are set to take place in the latter portion of this semester. Delta Chi Omega would also like to announce the dates of the Region IV Conference, which they will be hosting in the upcoming year. The conference will take place from the 17th until the 19th of October. Stay tuned for the conference theme, exam information, and other pertinent information which will be posted on the LAE website! 9 Chapter News OMEGA Alpha Omicron “Hamburger, Hot Dog & Bake Sale”, Danville CC Field Trip to the Central Lab (Virginia Department of Forensic Science), Richmond, VA “Pancake Breakfast” fundraiser at Applebees, South Boston, VA Field Trip to Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, Troy, VA 10 Chapter News PSI OMEGA University of New Haven’s Region 4 Chapter of ACJA, Psi Omega, had a very eventful semester. To start it off, they had an outstanding 120 new members join their club, helping make their club the biggest on their campus. Psi Omega started off the new academic year with their 2nd annual Thank a Police Officer Day, which was a great success. University of New Haven police, West Haven Police, New Haven Police, Seymour Police, and Milford Police were the stars of the day with an impressive 100+ years of expertise and experience in the careers that the members of Psi Omega hope to go into in the future. At this event, students were able to interact with these law enforcement officers in a non-traditional way so they could share their appreciation and ask all the questions they wanted. It was a great way to bring all parts of the community together. Later on in September, Psi Omega teamed up with the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences and the University’s Campus Police to host the first ever Campus Safety Walk. Over 150 students were in attendance to participate in this walk to celebrate National Campus Safety Awareness Month. This program was based off of University of Central Arkansas’ “Operation Safe Walk.” This event had students, staff, and faulty gather to walk the campus and surrounding areas to identify potential dangerous conditions and submit any ideas they had on safety improvements. After the walk, it was found that most people found the campus to be safe with just a few quick fixes. This was the major event among a few smaller events that Psi Omega helped offer to the public during this month of Campus Safety. As for the rest of the semester, Psi Omega made an active effort to befriend other clubs on campus by co-sponsoring events. One of the biggest events was a Brother2Sister Panel Discussion on Police Brutality. Daniel Maxwell, the chapter’s advisor, was one of the members on the panel for this discussion so the turn out on Psi Omega’s part for this event was encouraged even more. Considering a majority of the club member’s majors being something in law enforcement, this discussion got very heated and was a great way for the members to utilize their criminal justice knowledge. There were also many open houses over the course of the semester that Psi Omega helped do tours and direction campus visitors in the right direction. Psi Omega also took initiative to help raise awareness for World AID’s Day by selling chocolate lollipops and ribbons in their student center. Before leaving for winter break, University of New Haven’s ACJA chapter organized a Give Back Night at On The Border, who gave 10% of the day’s sales back to the club. The highlight of Psi Omega’s semester, however, was their success at the Regionals Conference. Forty-three members were in attendance and they were able to take back thirty-seven awards including Sweepstake Award, Top Academic Award, and an honorable mention of professionalism in the lieu of the Spirit Award. This just goes to show that the members of Psi Omega put a great deal of effort into their club. Psi Omega plans on bringing thirty-four members to this year’s Nationals Conference and have been eagerly preparing. It should be noted that as a fundraiser, they will be selling ACJA pens at Nationals. You are able to buy one pen for $.75 or two pens for $1 so be sure to keep an eye out for them. 11 Chapters & Contact Information REGION IV CHAPTERS AND CONTACT INFORMATION (CA - CHAPTER ADVISOR) ALPHA GAMMA SIGMA (AGS) MONROE COLLEGE 2468 JEROME AVENUE BRONX, NY 10468 RODNEY, MICHELE mrodneyt@monroecollege.edu MONROE COLLEGE 2468 JEROME AVENUE BRONX, NY 10468 ALPHA KAPPA OMEGA (AKO) LOCK HAVEN UNIVERSITY OF PA 116 FOUNDERS HALL CLEARFIELD CAMPUS CLEARFIELD, PA 16830 MCSKIMMING, MICHAEL J.
