An essential secondary element that a successful student must perceive is a fundamental cognitive reorganization pertaining to the understanding of the speech making process, both in composition and delivery. Course Objectives: 1. To become a more effective communicator and presenter. 2. To develop cognitive tools for researching, evaluating, analyzing and synthesizing written and oral communication. 3. To learn the basic principles of speech presentation and delivery including, but not limited to; audience analysis, selection of topic/content, research, and presentation. 4. To increase the understanding and utilization of integrating modern technology to enhance the overall effectiveness of the communication process. 5. To introduce and sustain secondary related practices and principles which will be transferable to both academic and real world applications. Communication Department Cognitive Benchmarks: To apply rhetorical principals to design and evaluation of mediated and non-mediated messages. To explain relationships among components of the communication process. Examine and understand in application the types, functions and relationships of verbal and non verbal symbols in mediated and non-mediated communications. Identify major communication technologies, explain functions and apply the specialization of those technologies to the design, production and distribution of messages. To understand and apply the principles and art of rhetoric to public communication for a specific desired outcome/purpose. COM 105 Public Speaking SUNY @ Fredonia Spring 2015 REQUIRED TEXT: Public Speaking: Concepts and Skills for a Diverse Society Jaffe, Clella Wadsworth Publishing Company 7th Edition (Please note new edition) Students should be advised that they are to bring their text book to every class lecture. Course instruction and content will directly relate to text chapters and will be necessary to follow and drive full benefit for both the actual speech making process and chapter tests. SPEECH PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS: (See additional handout for specific direction regard this) All Speeches will be based upon outline formats that you will be provided with. Under no circumstances will a student be permitted to present their speech without a hard copy of their preparation outline to submit the evening of the speech date. Department of Communication Ethical and Professional Standards The Department of Communication at SUNY Fredonia advocates the following standards of behavior for all students.* 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Academic honesty is expected. Attendance is expected at all class-related meetings. Punctuality is expected for all class- and department-related meetings. All university/department equipment or properties should be used with care and respect. The campus sustainability policy should be supported by using department and other resources responsibly. Cell phones should be turned off during all class meetings. COM 105 Public Speaking SUNY @ Fredonia Spring 2015 Examples/Explanations of Standards: 1. Academic honesty. Compliance with strict standards of academic honesty is expected. Academic misconduct/plagiarism will not be tolerated and may be grounds for failure of a course and suspension or dismissal from the university. Note that plagiarism is the failure to correctly site/reference any ideas or words that are not originally your own; you should always reference the sources of your information. Plagiarism also includes the using others' (or sharing your own) essays, quizzes, etc., as well as the use of pre-written, purchased or downloaded materials. Please review the SUNY Fredonia Academic Integrity Policy at http://www.fredonia.edu/catalog/4442.htm. 2. Attendance. Regular attendance is expected for all class-related meetings. Notifying professors in advance, as required by some faculty, does not constitute as an "excused absence." 3. Punctuality. Punctuality is expected for all class-related meetings, as well as meetings with faculty or staff. Students having a scheduling dilemma that makes punctuality to a class difficulty should reconsider their registration for that course. 4. Courteous classroom behavior. Considerate and respectful conduct should be enacted at all times. By way of example, this includes: o having considerate attentiveness to others, including listening rather than talking while others (professors and classmates) are engaged in discussion; talking is distracting and disrespectful to the speaker and to the other students. o avoiding side-work or distractions during class meetings. The focus during a class meeting should be the class meeting; engaging in other activities (such as texting or doing other reading) diminishes the ability to be fully involved in class interactions. It will therefore negatively impact credit for participation. o not packing up materials before the end of class meetings. o refraining from putting feet on chairs or other funiture/materials in the classroom. 5. Respectful classroom environment. Your enrollment in any course indicates your agreement that all discussions and interactions will be conducted with thought, maturity, and respect for others' rights to differing values and views. Discussion of differing beliefs is encouraged and should be conducted in a manner that maintains a climate conducive to the thinking and learning of all members of the class. Students are encouraged to exercise personal responsibility and self-discipline as they engage in the rigors of discovery and scholarship. 6. University/Department equipment or properties. Equipment belongs to the State of New York and SUNY Fredonia; access to the equipment is a privilege. Students using this equipment are responsible, ethically and otherwise, for returning equipment in the same condition that it was when it was checked out. In keeping with the SUNY Fredonia's Go Green initiatives to use resources more thoughtfully, students are encouraged to be mindful about paper and other resource usage. Please use double-sided printing for all hard copies. Moreover, you are encouraged to print selectively from course E-reserves, share with classmates, and recycle all printed materials that cannot be passed on to future students. 8. Cell phones. Receiving telephone calls and sending or receiving text messages are distracting from classroom goals. Cell phones and other interactive devices must be turned OFF -- not to silent or vibrate -- and stored in students' bags before the beginning of classes. 9. Laptops. Research shows that laptops are a distraction in the classroom*. In general, all electronic devices should be turned off unless otherwise instructed by a course professor or as needed to accommodate specific disabilities. 10. E-mail communications. E-mails written to any faculty or staff, or to any community member as a representative of SUNY Fredonia, should use professional formatting. This includes a clear subject heading, a courteous greeting, proper spelling and grammar, respectful content, and an identifying "signature." 11. Study time. YOU WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE TO THIS INFORMATION. 1.According to the course agreement that you will sign and agree to you must be ready to present your assigned speech on the day it is due. The only expectable reason for failure to be prepared to present can be found in the Suny College Catalog under the section addressing the attendance policy and what specifically constitutes a “legal” reason for absence from class. 1. Since this class only meets once a week, there are no provisions for “make-up” Speeches. Failure to be prepared will mean you will forfeit the potential points that said assignment would have provided for you towards your final grade point total. In addition, as previously stated, this is a mandatory attendance class. Your weekly presence in this classroom is expected, attendance will be taken at the start of each class, six o’clock sharp. You will be expected to be on time, seated and ready to get down to the task at hand. You have opted to enroll in a weekly class. Missing a session is the equivalent of missing 3 MWF classes or 2 Tu/Thu Classes. There are no “throw away” nights in my course. Every session counts. Either in preparation for speeches or tests, or the actual test and speech dates themselves. 2. Bring your memory card to class the day of the speech. Failure to do so will mean you will not be permitted to present your speech. 3. Please make certain you have a compatible memory card with the existing system that your speeches will be recorded on. 4. You must review the tape of your last speech and have completed in-writing responses to the self-evaluation form you will be provided with before attending the student speech conference w/ the instructor. Failure to do this will result in cancellation of conference and point reduction on speech point total. 5. You are responsible for all information, notes, outline criteria, etc. that is presented to you in this class, even if you are absent for a legitimate reason. If you do not understand what is expected of you in regards to each speeches set of specific expectations then it is your responsibility to seek immediate clarification. 6. Cell phones are not permitted to be in active mode to receive calls @ anytime during the duration of class.
