2. To develop cognitive tools for researching, evaluating, analyzing and synthesizing
written and oral communication.
3. To learn the basic principles of speech presentation and delivery including, but not
limited to; audience analysis, selection of topic/content, research, and presentation.
4. To increase the understanding and utilization of integrating modern technology to
enhance the overall effectiveness of the communication process.
5. To introduce and sustain secondary related practices and principles which will be
transferable to both academic and real world applications.
Communication Department Cognitive Benchmarks:
To apply rhetorical principals to design and evaluation of mediated and non-mediated messages.
To explain relationships among components of the communication process. Examine and
understand in application the types, functions and relationships of verbal and non verbal symbols
in mediated and non-mediated communications. Identify major communication technologies,

distribution of messages. To understand and apply the principles and art of rhetoric to public
communication for a specific desired outcome/purpose.
Department of Communication Philosophy
The faculty of the SUNY Fredonia Department of Communication encourages projects and
behaviors that are undertaken with thoughtful respect and consideration for others. We support

Examples/Explanations of Standards:
1. Academic honesty. Compliance with strict standards of academic honesty is expected.
Academic misconduct/plagiarism will not be tolerated and may be grounds for failure of
a course and suspension or dismissal from the university. Note that plagiarism is the
failure to correctly site/reference any ideas or words that are not originally your own; you
should always reference the sources of your information. Plagiarism also includes the
using others' (or sharing your own) essays, quizzes, etc., as well as the use of pre-written,
purchased or downloaded materials. Please review the SUNY Fredonia Academic
Integrity Policy at http://www.fredonia.edu/catalog/4442.htm.
2. Attendance. Regular attendance is expected for all class-related meetings. Notifying
professors in advance, as required by some faculty, does not constitute as an "excused
absence."
3. Punctuality. Punctuality is expected for all class-related meetings, as well as meetings
with faculty or staff. Students having a scheduling dilemma that makes punctuality to a
class difficulty should reconsider their registration for that course.
4. Courteous classroom behavior. Considerate and respectful conduct should be enacted at
all times. By way of example, this includes:
o having considerate attentiveness to others, including listening rather than talking
while others (professors and classmates) are engaged in discussion; talking is
distracting and disrespectful to the speaker and to the other students.
o avoiding side-work or distractions during class meetings. The focus during a class
meeting should be the class meeting; engaging in other activities (such as texting
or doing other reading) diminishes the ability to be fully involved in class
interactions. It will therefore negatively impact credit for participation.
o not packing up materials before the end of class meetings.
o refraining from putting feet on chairs or other funiture/materials in the classroom.
5. Respectful classroom environment. Your enrollment in any course indicates your
agreement that all discussions and interactions will be conducted with thought, maturity,
and respect for others' rights to differing values and views. Discussion of differing beliefs
is encouraged and should be conducted in a manner that maintains a climate conducive to
the thinking and learning of all members of the class. Students are encouraged to exercise
personal responsibility and self-discipline as they engage in the rigors of discovery and
scholarship.
6. University/Department equipment or properties. Equipment belongs to the State of
New York and SUNY Fredonia; access to the equipment is a privilege. Students using
this equipment are responsible, ethically and otherwise, for returning equipment in the
same condition that it was when it was checked out.

7. Sustainability policy. The Department of Communication is a Sustainability Partner on
the SUNY Fredonia campus. In keeping with the SUNY Fredonia's Go Green initiatives
to use resources more thoughtfully, students are encouraged to be mindful about paper
and other resource usage. Please use double-sided printing for all hard copies. Moreover,
you are encouraged to print selectively from course E-reserves, share with classmates,
and recycle all printed materials that cannot be passed on to future students.
8. Cell phones. Receiving telephone calls and sending or receiving text messages are
distracting from classroom goals. Cell phones and other interactive devices must be
turned OFF -- not to silent or vibrate -- and stored in students' bags before the beginning
of classes.
9. Laptops. Research shows that laptops are a distraction in the classroom*. In general, all
electronic devices should be turned off unless otherwise instructed by a course professor
or as needed to accommodate specific disabilities.
10. E-mail communications. E-mails written to any faculty or staff, or to any community
member as a representative of SUNY Fredonia, should use professional formatting. This
includes a clear subject heading, a courteous greeting, proper spelling and grammar,
respectful content, and an identifying "signature."
11. Study time. The Department of Communication enforces rigorous academic standards,
which maintain the high quality and success of our graduates. Students should expect to
devote a minimum of three hours of study/preparation time for each in-class/credit hour.

Department of Communication Philosophy - extended
Communication does not exist outside of relationships. With this in mind, the faculty of the
SUNY Fredonia Department of Communication believe that all communicators, whether in the
classroom, on the air, or within created works, have a responsibility to themselves and their
audience.
The faculty believe that it is our responsibility to provide perspective and structure as students
make choices about their work, and consequently, about themselves and who they are as adults
and scholars. We encourage students to make the effort to consider the consequences of their
choices for themselves, for others, and for those relationships.
Speaking Intensive – COMM 105
A. An explanation of how all students in the course will be involved in presentations and
assignments that help them achieve proficiency in oral discourse. These should typically include
researching a topic, developing an argument, and organizing supporting details. Please specify
types of oral discourse (for example, presentations, roundtables, debates, panels).
B. An explanation of how oral presentations are evaluated according to established criteria of
competent speaking in general and to standards relevant to a specific discipline or professional
context.
C. An assessment plan that facilitates course improvement by evaluating the effectiveness of the
course’s oral communication pedagogy in improving student proficiency in oral discourse.

Course Expectations
SUNY @Fredonia
PLEASE MAKE CERTAIN YOU PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THESE COURSE GUIDELINES
WHEN WE REVIEW THEM DURING THE INTRODUCTIORY LECTURE AND RETAIN THEM
FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. YOU WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE TO THIS INFORMATION.
1.According to the course agreement that you will sign and agree to you must be ready to present
your assigned speech on the day it is due. The only expectable reason for failure to be prepared
to present can be found in the Suny College Catalog under the section addressing the attendance
policy and what specifically constitutes a “legal” reason for absence from class.
1. Since this class only meets once a week, there are no provisions for “make-up” Speeches.
Failure to be prepared will mean you will forfeit the potential points that said assignment
would have provided for you towards your final grade point total. In addition, as
previously stated, this is a mandatory attendance class. Your weekly presence in this
classroom is expected, attendance will be taken at the start of each class, six o’clock
sharp. You will be expected to be on time, seated and ready to get down to the task at
hand. You have opted to enroll in a weekly class. Missing a session is the equivalent of
missing 3 MWF classes or 2 Tu/Thu Classes. There are no “throw away” nights in my
course. Every session counts. Either in preparation for speeches or tests, or the actual test
and speech dates themselves.
2. Bring your memory card to class the day of the speech. Failure to do so will mean you
will not be permitted to present your speech.
3. Please make certain you have a compatible memory card with the existing system that
your speeches will be recorded on.
4. You must review the tape of your last speech and have completed in-writing responses to
the self-evaluation form you will be provided with before attending the student speech
conference w/ the instructor. Failure to do this will result in cancellation of conference
and point reduction on speech point total.
5. You are responsible for all information, notes, outline criteria, etc. that is presented to
you in this class, even if you are absent for a legitimate reason. If you do not understand
what is expected of you in regards to each speeches set of specific expectations then it is
your responsibility to seek immediate clarification.
6. Cell phones are not permitted to be in active mode to receive calls @ anytime during
the duration of class.
