PROGRAMS OF STUDY:

B.A. in Health Care/M.S.N. (from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing)
Why study Health Care/Nursing at Maryville College?
Are you interested in becoming a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist or certified
nurse midwife? Would you like to be a nurse educator? If so, you’ll need a master’s degree
in nursing to pursue those careers, and through a partnership with Vanderbilt University
School of Nursing, you can begin your college education at Maryville College and earn
both a B.A. and an M.S.N. in five years. Studying three years at MC, you’ll take relevant
classes in biology, chemistry, psychology, math, sociology and physical education/health
before applying to the nursing school. If accepted, you’ll transfer to Vanderbilt in year
four, when you’ll start generalist nursing courses. After successfully completing those,
you’ll earn your B.A. from Maryville and continue studies for the M.S.N.
It is possible for students to pursue other combinations of transfer or graduate programs
in nursing, but those plans should be made early in their college career.

Allison Beaubien ’17
Hometown: Adrian, Mich.
Allison chose Maryville College specifically for its
participation in Vanderbilt University’s Senior Year in
Absentia program for nursing. After finishing her coursework
at MC, she plans to enroll at Vanderbilt for a master’s degree
in the university’s advanced nursing practice specialty Nurse
Midwifery/Family Nurse Practitioner (NMW/FNP).
“Becoming a nurse practitioner who specializes in midwifery
and family care interests me because of the broad range of
patients whom I will have the opportunity to care for,” she said. “Maryville is preparing me for
that career through a program of study that includes classes in both biology and psychology.”

Abby thought she would enroll in medical school after
graduating from Maryville, and her advisor recommended
that she job shadow in local medical clinics. Through that
experience, she met nurse practitioners and was impressed
by their ability to connect to patients and deliver a holistic
approach to health care. She enrolled in Vanderbilt
University’s School of Nursing in 2012, and graduated in 2014 with a master’s degree,
specializing in adult gerontology primary care.
“My education from Maryville put me miles ahead of my classmates at Vanderbilt
during my master’s program. My Animal Physiology class with Dr. [Drew] Crain helped
immensely with pathophysiology. My thesis project that I completed with Dr. [Jerilyn]
Swann made my master’s thesis a piece of cake,” she said. “I think that my liberal arts
education as a whole has helped me become a better nurse practitioner with its emphasis
on lifelong learning, creativity and exposure to new experiences.”
