Sousa Marches as Essential Band Repertoire
The clinic would involve live demonstrations showing the educational value of Sousa marches as essential
historical band literature and as highly effective teaching materials for high school bands. In particular it would
demonstrate the still largely unknown performance practices and special orchestrations used by Sousa while
performing his marches with his own band. The presentation would seek to bring new understanding and
stature to the works of this uniquely American band composer. One or two marches would be used to
demonstrate various keys to Sousa’s historical performance practices.

PMEA Invited Researcher: Conditions That Facilitate Music Learning Among Students With Special
Needs: Lesson Learned from The Prism Project
Since the passage of PL-94-142 (1975), now codified as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA),
the development of inclusive teaching models has provided positive steps forward toward uncovering the
environmental conditions that facilitate learning among children with special needs. In practice, however,
providing appropriate conditions for children remains a challenge for teachers in all disciplines. The purpose of
this session is to examine research that identifies and defines conditions that facilitate learning in music among
students with special needs. This research was completed as part of the Prism Project. This program is an arts
program for students with special needs. Lesson plans, case studies and techniques will be shared as a part of
this examination of best practice and research.
