Missouri Legal Trivia
By Joseph Fred Benson
In 1926, African-American Carter G. Woodson, a professor at the University of Chicago and one of the founders of the
Journal of Negro History, set aside the second week in February to be known as Negro History Week. This coincided with
the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. Dr. Woodson’s goal was to educate Americans about AfricanAmerican cultural backgrounds and the contributions of African-Americans to society. Since 1976, February has been
Black History Month.
March 8, 1911 was the first International Women’s History Day. In 1978, a week in March was set aside for Women’s
History Week. Three years later, Senator Orrin Hatch (R–Utah) and Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland) cosponsored a joint Congressional Resolution proclaiming a National Women’s History Week in March. In 1987, Congress
enacted legislation establishing March as Women’s History Month. This issue is devoted to African-American and Women’s
History Months.
