AUSTRALIA, AFRICA, SOUTH AMERICA
Australia is the largest island in the world, as well as the smallest continent in the world! The Australian
continent has only one country – Australia - and is known as the land down under as it lies entirely south of
the equator. The name Australia comes from the Latin word australis which means Southern. Australia is
home to the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef, that consists of coral deposits that span
approximately 2,000 kilometres. Some of the major animal species from Australia include kangaroos,
koalas, platypuses and emu.
South America is home to the Andes Mountains, which form the second highest mountain system in the
world next to the Himalayas in Asia. South America is also home to the world’s largest river by volume, the
Amazon. Mount Chimborazo and Mount Cotopaxi are the world’s highest volcanoes and they’re in South
America, too. Major languages spoken in South America are Spanish and Portuguese. Some of the major
animal species found in South America include llamas, alpacas, anteaters, armadillos and blue morpho
butterflies.
Africa is the second largest continent on earth and is the home of the longest river in the world, the Nile,
and the largest desert in the world, the Sahara. The equator passes through the middle of this continent, so
it receives direct sunlight year-round, creating a very hot climate. Africa is also very rich in minerals, with 95
per cent of the world’s diamonds and more than 50 per cent of the world’s gold. Some of the major animal
species found in Africa include the African elephant, addax, lion, cheetah, zebra, giraffe and Egyptian
mongooses, to name a few.
