North America is also home to Lake Superior - the largest fresh water lake in the world. This continent is the only one that experiences every kind of climate, in addition to five time zones. North America is the world’s largest producer of maize, wheat and soybean, and the largest exporter of wheat. Europe is the second smallest and third most populated continent in the world; it has 47 countries. Germany is the most populous country in Europe, with London and Paris being the most populous cities. The world’s smallest country, Vatican City, is in Europe, occupying less than half a square kilometre! Europe is the only continent without any deserts. It is widely believed that Europe is named originally after Europa, a Phoenician Princess from Greek mythology. Some of the major animal species found in Europe include European tree frogs, wild boars, hedge hogs and roe deer. The Australian continent has only one country – Australia - and is known as the land down under as it lies entirely south of the equator. The name Australia comes from the Latin word australis which means Southern. Australia is home to the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef, that consists of coral deposits that span approximately 2,000 kilometres. Some of the major animal species from Australia include kangaroos, koalas, platypuses and emu. South America is home to the Andes Mountains, which form the second highest mountain system in the world next to the Himalayas in Asia. South America is also home to the world’s largest river by volume, the Amazon. Mount Chimborazo and Mount Cotopaxi are the world’s highest volcanoes and they’re in South America, too. Major languages spoken in South America are Spanish and Portuguese. Some of the major animal species found in South America include llamas, alpacas, anteaters, armadillos and blue morpho butterflies. Africa is the second largest continent on earth and is the home of the longest river in the world, the Nile, and the largest desert in the world, the Sahara. The equator passes through the middle of this continent, so it receives direct sunlight year-round, creating a very hot climate. Africa is also very rich in minerals, with 95 per cent of the world’s diamonds and more than 50 per cent of the world’s gold. Some of the major animal species found in Africa include the African elephant, addax, lion, cheetah, zebra, giraffe and Egyptian mongooses, to name a few.
