Hills, Heavy Snow in Jet-Age Stride
The B.C. Department of Highways has been no t ed for pioneering in various engineering fields,
in cl u din g the development of
n ew eq uipmen t . I n January it
achieved a nother first by putting int o operation on t he SalmoCrest on su m mit' a snowplow power ed by a t ur bine engine. So far
as is kno wn this is the on ly one
in t h e world.
The vehicl e is a Pacific Truck and
Tr ail er four wheel drive, cab-overengine unit with a 9- yard sand box on
th e back. It is the same chassis used
for the familiar "5000 Series" plow
and it has a gross vehicle weight of
40,000 pounds.
The engine , a Pratt and Whitney
ST6- A industrial version of the 500
to 700 horsepower free turbine turbopr op. tur boshaft model, is a loan from
United Aircraft of Can ada Limited for
e xperime nt al purposes. It runs on anyt hing from furnace oil to unleaded gas olin e but diesel fuel is normall y used.

offers reliahility, good performance
and the compactnes s of the aircraft turbine engine . Rated at 320 horsepower.
t he engine weighs only 285 pounds and
has a diameter of 19 inches and a length
of 59 inc hes. By contrast the diesel
engine nor mall y used to power this
unit weighs over 2,000 pounds and
develops 250 horsepower.
Given the assignment to convert the 20 -ton "5000 S eries" snowp low from diesel
to turbine engine, the Langford garage crew have been raised for the excellent

The installation is simple and compact, using a three-point mounting s ystem. A centrally located mount
carried the engine's weight and two
r e maining mounts at the rear ca r r y
the torque produced by the engine.
A first class-job of tnstallatton was
done by the Departmen t's own Lan gford garage crew.

A flexible coupling is installed between the engine and transmission,
per mitting mi salignment and angular
move ment without damage to the ins ta llati on.
An Alli son tr ans mis s ion is used to
t r ans mit the high to rque at low shaft
speed to the four driving wheels. This
pr oduce s high sta rting power and fast
accel e ration without gear changes, for
exa mple, 0-30 m.p.h. in 10 seconds,
In addition to conventional air br akes,
a torque retarder incorporated into
the tranmis sion produces additional
br aking powe r , and tests showed tha t
from 35 m.p.h, a complete stop was
achieved in 5 seconds. (Above figures
obtained when vehicle unloaded with
a N. V. W. 31,100 pounds.)
Performance figures obtained from
initial tes ti ng under ac tual work ing
conditions have revealed interesting
facts: the noise level, when compared
to it s equivalent diesel power unit,
is signifi cantl y lower; it can ascend
a 6% gr ade te n miles long, maintaining
40 rn.p.h, without gear chan ges; it can
descend an equivalent grade without
an y inc r eas e in speed, using torque
r eta rder only.

Spring signals the approach o{ our busiest season. It also
means the start of the annual tourist migration to B.C. As
we have said before, we can 't build roads without mak ing
a little dust but let's do our best to ease things as much as
possi ble for our visitors. Th ere were more than 5,000,000
of the m last year. If we have to occasionally delay the
tra veller (and we include oUl own B .C. vacationer, of
course) detour him, or even dirty his car a little, let's offer
him help , guidance and a smile, and see tha t he ' gets
through" with the least difficulty . To urists spent $200
million in B .C. last year but even if th ey didn't spend a
nickel we owe them th e courtesy of good hosts and neigh bours.

his prese nt capacity as Captain.

Edith Sil ver (for me r l y Edi th Murray),
who has completed 25 yea r s of service
with the Govern ment of B r it is h Columb ia. All of this time has bee n with the
Depa rtm ent of Publi c Works and Highwa ys in Vande r hoof, with the exception
of four years with the Depart ment of
F inance. Mr s . Silver was among the
m ain lan d emp loyees who were presented wit h 25- yea r Se rv ice Awards
by the Honour able W. A. C. Bennett
at a Vancou ve r luncheon on December
16, 1965.

CAPT AIN ALISTER CAMPBE LL attended the 25-year award luncheon in
the Vancouver Hote l on December 16,
1965. He received a 25- yea r ce r ti ficate
for co nti nuous service since Ju ne 1st,
1939 .

Bridge Replaced
Edith joined the Civ il Se r vice in
1939 as a stenogr apher with the Publi c
Work s Department , but due to shortage
of work, was laid off after 13 months.
Her continuous em ployme nt began Ju ly,
1940 at the Gove rnm ent Agenc y in Fort
Fras e r , and s he r eturn ed to Vander hoo f as cl erk in 1944.
The Sil ve r s share an interest in
ch oi r and chur ch wor k, and Bill ' s
musical tal ents exte nd to band and
orchestra. Both enjoy the re c r eati on
of the ·a r ea , which inclu des fish ing,
boating, and r elaxing at their cottage
on Stuart Lake in summer , and s upporting the Vande r hoof Bea r s ' hockey
team and curling in wint er .

bridge, built in 1931, had become quite
a bottleneck in recent years and, with
t he rebu ilding of Highway 95 to a 60
M. P .H. road, its us eful days were ove r .
It has been rep laced by a new model
of re-inforced concrete beam s pan.

Vocational Insitute from Januar y 10- 14, 1966.
GEORGE F RANS ON, 65, diedFebr uary 6, 1966. He worked on the Ladner
Ferry from 1943-1959, then in the
De as Control Tower until he retired
18 months ago.
VICTOR A. LESLIE, Labor er at
'Hcamous died at the age of 55. Mr.

DOUG DEAN, District Office Manager in the Salmon Arm offi ce, who received his 25 Years Continous Se r vice
award only last December, died J anua r y 1, 1966. Mr. Dean's death, was a
blow to his many friend s in the Salmon
Arm Court House. He leaves his wif e,
Ethel.

Safety sessions were held on ea ch of the fi r s t thr e e days. The Regional Highway Engineer, Mr . G. Elston, int r oduced the s afety se ssions and stated the Department's pol icy toward safe wor k. J. D. Paton, Assistant Insp ecti on Supe rv isor,
Workmen's Compensation Board, spoke on safety gen e rally and the work of the
Board; R. L. Roscoe of Boyl es Brothers Dia mond Dr illing Company spoke on s afe ty
in the drilling industry; Gl en Ades fr om the offic e of the Supertntend ent of Equipment spoke on defensive driving; and Ken J ackson of t he Civil Servic e Commission ,
spoke about, and showed films on, safe driving habits.

CLARENCE AVISON died February
1, 1966 after 'a lengthy illness. Mr.
Avison he ld the position of Stoc kman
in the Depar t ment Garage at Clo verd ale. He had four years of war s er vice
and joined the New Westminster Mech anical Branch in J anuary 1964. He
l ea ves his wife and four child ren. He
was born on February 2, 1921, at Star
City, Saskatchewan.
CAPT AIN WARREN HAST INGS died
December 22, 1965 at t he age of 63.
He had been a Master Marine since
March 1943, joining the Highways F e rr y
System In Janu ar y, 1960 as re lief Capt ain on the Woodfib re Ferry and transfer rin g to the Barnston Is land Ferry
in the New Westminster Dis tric t In
March , 1963. Captain Ha stings had an
interesting career in coas ta l s hipp ing,
having wor ked for the Can adian Nation al Steamships and several Vanco uver Tu g Companie s. He worked for the
North Vancouver Ferries from 1940
to 1958 and did summer run s for Har bour Navigation. He was born June 30,
1903, in Courtland, Ontario. He leaves
hi s Wife, two son s and a daughte r . His
son, Rowland W., works for th e Department on the Coquitla m maintenance
c r ew.
FRANK B. GOW ANLOCK of T elkwa,
B .C. , died Januar y 11, 1966, after a
l ength y illness. He was 56 and had been
workin g as a Bridgem an in Ominec a
West for the past nine yea r s .

had stopped. Investigatin g police offi c ers reporte d that John waged a 25m inut e fight to s ave the life of U.B .C .

in a car accident near the south end

Czen's heart beat stopped twice and
both ti mes John used mouth to mouth
r es us c ita ti on to restore the pulse.

Swede Commons inspe cting 1932
A banquet was held December 14, ,196 5 in
F ernie for the retirement of SWEDE COMMONS.
Approximately 65 attended, incl uding Fern ie
District employees and their wives and Regional
officials.
One of the Department's longes t pe r iods of
continuous service came to an end. Swede
Commons spent 43 years with the Depa r t ment,
28 years as equipment operator and the re maining 15 years as Senior Foreman. He began in
1922 with the bridge crew and in 1927 operated
Model -T" ha lf ton and one ton dump t r uc ks with
gravity feed dump boxes. He became Senior
Foreman in 1950 and r etired as Road F or e man
De cember 8, 1965.
Swede and Mr s. Commons have four chil dr en,
all grown and _away from home. He and his
wife plan to remain in Fernie and devote much
of their time to fishing.

All Government Employees vacationing the Vancouver area this year, Please
note ••• From March 19 to October 22, the Department of Highways Dock District,
is sponsoring a monthly golf tournament. Any government employee is cordially

52.5 mi les wes t of Terrace on Highway 16 bloc king both r oad
and rail traffic for a period of 12 hour s . Skeen a West Dis trict
and C.N.R. crews joined forces to c lea r the s lide which
measured 20 feet de ep and 350 fee t long. T he railway brought
in one rail Vee s now plow, one tournadoz e r and one Euc lid
C - 6 dozer. Highways us ed one Cat D- 7 doze r , one Michigan
dozer and one large s now plower. P ar t wa y thr ough the slide
the ra ilwa y Vee plow be c ame derail ed whi ch furthe r dela yed

On The Job
The Fort S t J ohn Bridge Crew under the direction of
Floyd Erishstad built a bridge over the Upper Ha lfw ay
River 20 mi les south-west of the A lask a H ig h way at mile
143. Construction began during the third week of J anuary.
Work on the bridge was well under way the next week with
the piling being driven in temp erature of 40. below. Second
and third pictures show crewmen Bill Marshall and Donald
Peterson at u -orh in sub zero temperature.
