Effective for the Fall of 2014 at the U of R, U of S and SIAST
(Subject to change)
Updated October 2013
The western provincial and territorial governments have developed a common curriculum framework for high
school mathematics. The framework is a substantial change for Saskatchewan and is based on pathways
(Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics, Foundations of Mathematics, and Pre-calculus) starting in Grade
10. Additional information about the common framework initiative can be found at http://www.wncp.ca/
The University of Regina has established their admission requirements that include these new pathways
and courses through a formal approval process. The following lists each Faculty’s requirements.
Any of the following courses will meet the Math and Science requirements for this Faculty:





Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 30
Foundations of Mathematics 30
Pre-calculus 20
Pre-calculus 30
A 30 level Science
Either of the following courses will meet the Math requirements for this Faculty:
 Foundations of Mathematics 30 OR
 Pre-calculus 30
 Math B 30

 Or a 30 level Science
In Addition:
Elementary: Math 30, Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 30, Foundations of
Mathematics 30 or Pre-calculus 30.
Secondary with a major or minor in Math or Physics: Math B30 & C30 or major in Chemistry also
requires Chemistry 30 and Physics 30.
Secondary with a major or minor in Chemistry: Math B30 & C30 or Foundations of Mathematics
20 & Pre-Calculus 30. (Foundations 20 is under review)
Both of the following courses are required to meet the Math requirement for this Faculty:
 Pre-Calculus 30, Calculus 30 recommended
.

 Or a 30 – level Science
Here is the latest information on the new Math curriculum and admission at the U of S (January 2012).
To summarize Pre-Calculus 30 gives students the best flexibility with their programs at the U of S.
However, if they are not ever going to be interested in a science based degree or professional college,
Foundations 30 works very well.
Foundations 30 is acceptable, but students need to complete a math class. Students that have PreCalculus 30 are going to be at a large advantage as they will do much better in the math class that
involves some calculus.
The College of Arts & Science will accept Foundations 30 for admission. However, ALL of the Bachelor
of Science degrees require a university calculus class and Pre-Calculus 30 is the pre-requisite for this.
Therefore, we recommend Calculus 30 for all students pursuing a science degree.

Foundations 30 can be used for admission to the college, however, the Bachelor of Commerce degree
requires Math 121 or Math 110 which both require Pre-Calculus as a prerequisite. Therefore we
recommend Pre-Calculus 30 for this degree path.
Needs Pre-Calculus 30 and Calculus 30 (also need a combined average of 70% or greater to apply).
Foundations 30 or Pre-Calculus 30. If students are doing a combined Kin/Ed degree and want to have
math as a teaching area they do need Pre-Calculus 30.
Education or Law – depends on the classes that the students want to take through their degree.

Note: For entry requirements of grade 10, 11 and 12, there is no specific mathematics requirement
other than the math that is required to achieve that grade standing, Regular or Modified. Because there
are so many programs at SIAST, it is important to verify Math requirements at the SIAST website:
www.goSIAST.com.
*** Students NEED to research Math Requirements for Apprenticeship Programs as well as for
Employment Advancement. Each Trade has different requirements – information can be found at
www.saskapprenticeship.ca Usually, higher math is required for Apprenticeship than it is for SIAST
admission!!!
