Foundations of Mathematics & Pre-calculus 10
Course Outline
Course Description:
This course emphasizes the development of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes relevant to the
development of numeracy. It also promotes the development of positive attitudes, problem
solving, communication, applications, reasoning, and the use of technology.
This course is the common starting point for the Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-calculus
pathways. Students who successfully complete this course can choose Foundations of
Mathematics 11 and/or Pre-calculus 11.
Foundations of Mathematics
This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and
critical thinking skills identified for post-secondary studies in programs that do not require the
study of theoretical calculus. Topics include financial mathematics, geometry, measurement,
number, logical reasoning, relations and functions, statistics and probability.
Pre-calculus
This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and
critical thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that require the study
of theoretical calculus. Topics include algebra and number, measurement, relations and
functions, trigonometry and permutations, combinations and binomial theorem.
Foundations of Mathematics & Pre-calculus 10 has a provincial exam component. All students
must write this exam in order to meet British Columbia’s graduation requirements.
Course Breakdown
- Measurement; Trigonometry; Factors and Products; Roots and Powers; Relations and
Functions; Linear Functions; Systems of Linear Equations
Evaluation:
Math Labs and Projects
Quizzes
Tests
20%
30%
50%
This makes up 80% of your course
grade. The Provincial Exam at the
end of the year will count for 20%
of your final mark.
Rewrites of quizzes and tests are permitted under the following guidelines:
1) Quizzes must be rewritten before the unit test.
2) Unit tests must be rewritten before the next unit test.
3) Before being allowed to rewrite a unit test, students may be required to
complete test corrections and submit all notes, examples, and exercises for the unit.
Ms. Bianca Maritz
Note: No late work or rewrites will be accepted in the final week before the end of the term.
Letter Grades
A: 86-100%
C: 60-66%
B: 73-85%
C-: 50-59%
C+: 67-72%
F: 0-49%
Expectations:
Students are expected to attend class regularly, be punctual, and have all necessary equipment.
Regular attendance is the most critical component to success. Too many absences, even for the
best of reasons, can make it difficult if not impossible for a student to adequately complete the
required course outcomes.
Labs and Projects:
There is a Math Lab every unit and it will be marked using a rubric, which you will get on the
same day as the lab. Math labs are due 1 week after it is assigned.
There are 3 projects throughout the course and they will be due 2 weeks after it is assigned.
Legitimately absent/late:
a. I need a note (signed by a parent)/attendance slip. I will try my best to help you
catch up on missed work, but it is solely your responsibility to find out which
assignments you missed and get the work. (You should have a "buddy system"
where your "buddy" collects your assignments if you are away)
b. If you miss a quiz, or test, you need a note signed by a parent and you will need to
find a time in the next 5 days to complete it, or you will receive a mark of 0 (an
NHI) until that quiz or test is made up.
Equipment:
- Binder
- Lined Paper and Graphing Paper
- Pen and pencils and an Eraser
- Scientific Calculator
- Ruler (preferably with both metric and imperial units)
Absolutely no cell phones in class!
Communication:
Extra help: I will be available at lunch time and until 4pm everyday if you need extra
help. You can also contact me at bianca.maritz@colegiocanadiense.edu.co if you have any
further questions.
