—On my trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast
My recent five-day visit to the Gulf Coast casino jurisdiction was
full of surprises and got me thinking: How did this region become
so established and increasingly successful after suffering one of
the worst disasters in history when Katrina swept casinos off their
moorings and destroyed residential housing and businesses.
Take the case of publishers MICHAEL and MARY SUNDERMAN, who printed JACKPOT! Magazine to serve casinos and players, were wiped out by the hurricane and had only a handful of casino customers left. Though the challenge was difficult, the water did
not cover their spirit and today the couple’s M2 Media has evolved
into a modest communications services empire and publishes not
only Jackpot! Magazine, but also regional publications such as DISCOVERY, MISSISSIPPI LOUISIANA GAMING NEWS, and the
hugely successful SOUTH MISSISSIPPI LIVING. The Sundermans have always been expansionist, constantly seeking new growth
opportunities and will soon launch an outdoor/sports magazine.
How did this all take place? Well, consider that the health of M2
Media is tied directly to a healthy casino industry and you have the
answer. The glitzy SCARLET PEARL RESORT CASINO recently
opened and became the 13th casino lining the shore from Bay St.
14 JACKPOT! MAGAZINE • March 3 - March 16, 2016
Louis eastward to D’Iberville — a 30-mile stretch. And one casino
exec told me that two more casinos might be in the offing. I visited
the Welcome Center in Ocean Springs and the manager there told
me that a new train service would soon run along the coast and connect Orlando to New Orleans. It is expected to add significantly to
the number of visitations to casinos.
But it takes more than expensive buildings to make it all work.
A former Tunica casino executive, ROB WINKLER, said… “The
Coast is happening and with its beaches, great weather, golf courses
and more, it is truly a ‘stay and play’ destination.” Winkler, the swing
shift manager at ISLAND VIEW in Gulfport, said the compact
mass of attractions and amenities can only grow. After spending
five days at Island View, the beautiful Beau Rivage in Gulfport and
the glamorous new Scarlet Pearl in D’Iberville, I agree with that assessment.
ADOLPH LEPRE, the swing shift manager at Scarlet Pearl, is
well-known having spent many years in Tunica casinos, where he
developed a large and loyal following. “I have no problem inviting players to visit here,” he said. “Not only are our guest rooms
the very best but we have new games, such as 21+3 that are very
popular...” The likeable Lepre gained his following in large due to
a popular long-going series of blackjack tournaments, with large
prize pools coupled with modest buy-ins. Will he bring those blackjack tournaments back to life at Scarlet Pearl? Stay tuned.
For my readers information, the 21 + 3 game Adolph mentioned
is a blackjack game with a side bet. Now side bets are well known
for their terrible odds, but after playing it for several hours and winning many side bets it has become my favorite table game. After you
make your initial bet you place a minimum $5 side bet on the layout.
Your first two cards and the dealer’s up card are your hand for the
side bet. It pays a generous 9-1 for trips, straights, and flushes.
Summing up my sojourn, I dined at several excellent restaurants,
like Steamers, a stand-alone seafood house across from the front
door of Island View, Jia - the incomparable Asian-Fusion room at
Beau Rivage and Scarlet Pearl’s steakhouse, Scarlet Grille, with its
expansive horseshoe bar. I also had the pleasure to sample sushi
on another night with the accomplished MARY SPAIN, the public
relations director for Beau Rivage. There is a quiet little bar tucked
away in a corner adjacent to Jia. where the sushi selections and quality are incomparable. One last thought on F&B. When the comp
drinks on the floor are McAllen’s 12-year-old, Glenlivit and Johnny
Walker Black, you know it’s a class place and in this case it’s Beau
Rivage.
More good news: Revenue at Mississippi’s Gulf Coast casinos
increased dramatically in January year over year and gaming revenue was up statewide in Mississippi. Mississippi casinos were up
7.6 percent this January compared to January of last year. Statewide
revenue in January was also 6.2 percent higher than the December.

Gold Strike Pickle & Jam mixes modern and southern
TUNICA RESORTS – Gold Strike Casino Resort has completed its latest restaurant addition with Pickle & Jam - A Social
Eatery. The 7,500-square-foot restaurant transitioned from
food court to fast, casual dining to meet the needs
of guests on-the-go and those who prefer to
sit and dine. The new restaurant opened earlier this year.
The restaurant’s name was the brainchild
of Executive Food & Beverage Director Anthony Caratozzolo. “Pickles and jam are two
Southern staples, which is exactly what this
dining outlet offers. Guests place their order, and
it’s delivered directly to their table,” said Caratozzolo. “The
previous food court was three separate fast food venues in one
area. We’ve consolidated those into one stop and added a number
of bonuses guests will also appreciate.”

HOROSCOPE
You’re urged to merge with surroundings, Pisces
Editor’s Note: Horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes only
and are for the time period March 3 - March 16, 2016.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 19) —The Sun
in your sign forms a curious addition to
Neptune and Chiron in your part of the sky.
The Sun indicates your personal center and sense of
selfhood, while Neptune and Chiron are linked with
intangibles like faith, spirituality, compassion and the
urge to merge with others and your surroundings.
Aries (March 20-April 19) — This period
is a mixture of favorable and challenging
trends, but even complex issues that’ll need
more care can work out well if you apply yourself.
Dealings with folks you’d number among your
friends prove most fortunate. Anyone intent on
limiting your freedom gets short shrift.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) — Later this
period you’ll be asking where amid your
obligations and responsibilities, spare-time
activities and the things you do for fun, you can feel
most uniquely yourself. Know that a well-rounded
existence allows you enough scope to fulfil your
potential via the decisions you are making every day.
Gemini (May 21-June 20) — Your acting
without constraint or guidance is like a
runaway train, the brakes of which have
temporarily ceased to function. You are certain to
get a great deal done, but at the risk of burning out
and exhausting yourself. It might be lots of little tasks
here and there, one leading on to another.
Cancer (June 21-July 22) — If you have
an important matter to discuss, a vital
meeting to schedule or a telephone call, you
you’ll find the stars are on your side for a successful
outcome if you can approach matters with an open
heart. A positive attitude works wonders, so long as
you are willing to be honest.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) — Venus in your
partnership zone heads a powerful trend
that bodes well for your relationships on
a social and business level, or from an intimate
personal perspective. Mercury suggests the chance to
talk over certain complicated scenarios.
THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN • www.jackpotmagazine.com Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — The closing
days of this period suggest that with your
conservative approach you could maybe
push a little harder where a few ideas are concerned.
You are aided and abetted in your voyage toward new
horizons by your ability to work hard.
Libra (Sep. 23-Oct. 22) — Maybe it has
been the need to focus on your financial
interests or the fact that your best ideas
and greatest insights seem to prevail when you’re by
yourself, but you have increasingly felt that resolving
your concerns in private is the best way forward.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — Mars will be
acting like a wild card and since it’s in your
constellation, your energy and confidence
are generally unbridled. Life on the roller coaster
always did hold an attraction for you, but in practice
it feels gruelling and swiftly you will find it gets rather
old.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — Saturn
seeks to prove that its presence in your sign
isn’t all bad news. Develop a philosophical
standpoint and remind yourself how this planet is
the most accentuated of all when it comes to your
professional interests and attaining your ambitions.
The benefits can outweigh the downside.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — An
improving financial situation depends on
letting go of the past. As your emotional
state is irrevocably tied to this, you can include it in
the picture, too. You must accept that holding on to
prior preconceptions is impeding your progress, even
though you believe you must maintain them.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — You are
charm personified. You are able to say the
right thing to the correct person at the
opportune moment and you possess the rare quality
of being able to impress just as much with your
listening skills.
