Conference Guide
Inside you’ll find all kinds of useful tidbits to help you
with your conference experience. We’ve designed this

wherever possible. Please use this guide as your goto resource for conference planning, information for
newbies, logistics and frequently asked questions.
We can’t wait to see you all in The Big Apple!

Q&A
How do I pick up my badge?
This year we’re doing something new and different – we’re mailing your BlogHer ’10
badge in advance to the address you provided during registration. The primary reason
for this change is to streamline the onsite registration process and avoid those long lines
that are all too familiar. The badge will include your preferred data (that you entered
during the registration process) and the parties you are registered to attend. In addition,
your drink tickets will be included, so it’s important not to lose this document. You will
still need to pick up your badge holder, lanyard, commemorative pin and (optional)
conference tote bag.
Please watch the mail for your badge, and we will be sure to clearly mark the mailer so
you know it’s not junk!
I’ve arrived at the hotel. Now what?
Tired from a long day of travelling? Head to your room, unwind and power-up that
laptop. Remember, in-room WiFi is complimentary for BlogHer attendees.
If you’re arriving on Thursday evening, you can go ahead and pick up your badge-holder,
lanyard, commemorative pin and conference tote bag. We’ll have Registration open on
Level 2 of the hotel from 4-7pm on Thursday.
If you’re in a party mood, there are several events you can attend. Check out BlogHer’s
list of parties here. But don’t forget to RSVP! We have limited space, so only those
attendees who have RSVP’d in advance will be able to attend.
What if there’s a problem with my badge? How does registration work?
Our Registration & Information Desk, located on Level 2 of the hotel, will be open on
Thursday from 4-7pm. It will then re-open at 7am on Friday and stay open throughout
the duration of the conference.
Remember, if you’re planning on attending any of the Thursday evening parties, you’ll
need your conference badge to attend.
As noted above, we will be mailing out your badge in advance of the conference, but
please consider the Registration & Information Desk your one-stop-shop for anything
you need during the conference.
Do I need to sign up for sessions in advance?
No, we don’t require attendees to sign up for sessions in advance. However, we do
recommend creating an itinerary for yourself in advance. Peruse the online agenda and
pick out the sessions that sound interesting to you. If you end up not liking the session
4
you selected, you should feel free to vote with your feet by walking right out and going
to another.
Will there be WiFi? Places for me to plug in?
There will be complimentary WiFi for all attendees throughout the programming space
and in guest rooms at the Hilton. We’ll also have areas for you to plug in at the front of
each breakout room and of course, in our Internet Café, brought to you by Chevrolet.
With limited outlets for electricity, a helpful hint is to bring a power-strip so you can share
with your fellow attendees (not a bad way to make new friends either).
Can I bring my husband/partner/friend/children along?
Everyone, regardless of age or gender, is welcome to register for the conference.
However, only paid registrants are allowed into the conference area (although infants are
allowed to accompany a parent or guardian).
Thanks to conference sponsor, Kmart, on-site childcare is available for children ages
3 months to 10 years, for those who pre-register. If interested, please register here.
What do I do if I have a question? What if I lose something?
Consider the BlogHer Registration & Information Desk your concierge and help center.
There will be BlogHer staff and volunteers at the desk at all times throughout the
conference. Need something? Lose something? Have a question? They will be able
to steer you in the right direction and will be in direct contact with the entire conference
staff at all times.
You can also flag down a BlogHer staff member who can help you. We’ll be there with
green bands on our badges to assist you in whatever you need.
What will the weather be like in NYC?
New York in August is hot and humid, with average temperatures in the mid to upper
80°s. You should plan to bring light, summer clothing, but don’t forget your layers and
an umbrella – occasional downpours are not uncommon this time of year.
What should I wear?
As we mentioned above, the weather tends to be hot and sticky outside, but conference
spaces are known to be a bit cooler, with the AC pumping. Lightweight, summer attire
is best, with layering options. Perhaps a sundress with a cardi over-top? Jeans and a
5
tank? BlogHer attire runs the gamut. With 2,400 attendees, all with different style and
tastes, whatever you choose to wear should be just fine.
The most important item of clothing though, is your shoes! Even with all the conference
activities happening under one roof, there’s still a lot of walking and time spent on your
feet, so make sure your footwear is comfortable. Your best bet is to bring a couple pair
of shoes with varying heel heights, so your feet don’t get sore from being in the same
position all day.
What is BlogHer’s relationship with the sponsors?
We do everything we can to keep BlogHer attendee costs to a minimum. In order to do
this, our events must be subsidized…and that’s where the sponsors come in. This year,
the generous support of our sponsors has allowed us to not only keep the registration
costs the same as our first conference in 2005, it has also allowed us to let in an additional
200 bloggers off our waitlist for the second year in a row! Frankly, without them, our
events would not be possible. Nor would they be as fun. Not only do sponsors help
defray the costs of the event, they provide many of our conference “extras,” such as the
cocktail parties and some pretty cool swag.
Our sponsors are selected because they offer products or services that are relevant to
women and bloggers, and because they believe in what BlogHer is about. Stop by our
Sponsors Page to see who will be joining us in NYC this year. Sponsors do not pay for
or influence session content.
Will there be Birds of a Feather this year?
Yes, but this year we’re shaking things up a bit! We’ll have our usual Birds of a Feather
tables in a separate area off of the main ballroom during lunch each day - on Friday and
Saturday mornings, visit the Registration Desk to peruse a variety of topics, or to create
your own! Sign up by adding your name to the list, then find your table during lunch. And
this year, we’ve also added Birds of a Feather during lunch each day in the Writing, Geek
and Job Labs – the perfect spot to gather with your fellow writers, geeks and businesssavvy bloggers. And don’t forget! We’ll also have 2 Birds of a Feather gatherings in the
BlogHer Chill Space on Saturday evening: Patient bloggers will gather from 6-8pm and
Food bloggers will gather from 8-10pm. It’s a simple way to meet like-minded bloggers
and grow new friendships!
I have a sponsor helping to send me to BlogHer. Can I hand out swag
on-site?
Handing out swag within the conference space is NOT permitted. A new phenomenon
to last year’s conference, we know that many of this year’s attendees will have personal
sponsors, helping them cover their costs for attending the conference. If this applies
to you, please be sure to read our Guidelines for Sponsored Bloggers, which will be
enforced onsite.

Newbies
Should I bring my laptop? What if I don’t have one?
Laptops are encouraged, and there will be free WiFi throughout the conference space,
but they’re certainly not required. Laptops are great for note-taking, blogging from
the conference and uploading all your fabulous photos, but some attendees will find a
laptop too heavy or cumbersome. This is why many will opt for a good, old-fashioned
notebook and pen. It’s completely up to you.
Will there be men at BlogHer?
Of course! Anyone is welcome to attend BlogHer conferences and many men do. About
10% of BlogHer ’10 attendees will be male.

What are the cocktail parties like?
The BlogHer cocktail receptions are informal, fun, and a great way to unwind after a day
of conferencing.
We’ll kick things off on Thursday night with 3 community parties: Social Fiesta, The
People’s Party and Queerosphere. Click on the links to learn more and RSVP – and
remember, you’ll need a Full Conference, Cocktail Parties, or Cocktail + Expo Hall Pass
to sign-up for these parties.
On Friday night, BlogHer will host our Voices of the Year Gala Reception, to which all
BlogHer attendees are welcome.
And on Saturday night we’ll have 4 more community parties: Blogalicious, A Green
Affair, Sparklecorn and CheeseburgHer, as well as a BlogHer-hosted Chill Space. Once
again, click on the links to learn more and RSVP for these parties – you’ll need a Full
Conference, Saturday Only, Cocktail Parties, or Cocktail + Expo Hall Pass to sign-up for
these parties (except the Chill Space, no RSVP is required, but you will need to have one
of these pass types to attend).
To learn more about the parties this year read our announcement post, and stay tuned to
the Conference Blog for further updates.
What if I don’t know anyone? Who will be there?
Don’t worry! Many attendees travel alone and don’t know anyone before the conference.
This can be a little scary at first, but most people, newbies or not, can feel a little
overwhelmed. More importantly, remember that BlogHer attendees are a friendly group
and are eager to meet new blogging buddies.
Who will be there? Check out our Attendee Page on BlogHer.com and add yourself to
the list while you’re at it! (To add yourself, visit the BlogHer ’10 main page and click the
“I’m attending” link. You must first be logged in to your BlogHer.com account.) You can
also check out the #BlogHer10 Twitter feed for the latest talk about all things BlogHer.
Will there be any special activities for BlogHer Newbies onsite?
Glad you asked! We’ll be hosting a Newbie Breakfast on Friday morning at 8 a.m. in the
Trianon Ballroom, on level 3 of the Hilton. BlogHer’s own Deb on the Rocks will give you
an intro to the conference, Jes Ferris will guide you through the sessions and conference
programming and Erin Groh will let you know about the various sponsor activations you
may see during the conference.

BlogHer ’10 Goes Green
For the second consecutive year we have engaged a small group of bloggers who span
the eco-blogging spectrum, they are formally known as our Green Team. Their purpose
is to assist the BlogHer Conference Team with ideas, direction and support on how to
further “green” BlogHer. In addition, we at BlogHer only work with eco-friendly venues
in support of many green initiatives from recycling, composting, reusing and community
involvement. This year we are proud to announce the Hilton is actively “greening” their
venue as well as being a positive corporate citizen of the city of New York.
BlogHer’s Brochure: Online Only
It takes a lot of paper – and a lot of trees – to print this multi-page guide for 2,400
attendees. So this year, once again, the pre-conference guide will only be available
digitally. If you choose to print any of this guide, please only print those pages that you
need. There will be a printed map and abbreviated agenda on-site for your convenience.
The Swag Exchange
Now a conference tradition, the BlogHer Swag Exchange will be
back, thanks to conference sponsor P&G’s Future Friendly.
Experiencing Swag overload? We all love a free sample here
and there, but in the end, not every freebie makes it into our
suitcases home. That doesn’t mean they should be thrown away though!
Bring any items that you don’t want or need to the Swag Exchange, pick up any items
that you do want, and BlogHer and Future Friendly will ensure that the items get donated
or recycled properly. The Swag Exchange will be open throughout the conference in the
Gibson Suite on level 2. Please stop by!
The BlogHer ’10 Tote Bag: Reusable and Helping Women in India
This year’s tote bag sponsor, Gettington.com, has generously supplied us with ecofriendly, fair-trade bags from Freeset, handmade by women in India in search of a better
life.
Human trafficking and poverty feed India’s sex trade, where women and children forced
into prostitution face a life without choices, marginalized by society. Freeset is a bag and
t-shirt manufacturing business whose purpose is to provide these women with a way out
of prostitution. Women are employed on the basis of their need for a job, not the skills
they bring to it. They are trained, paid a good wage and signed up to a health insurance
plan and pension fund. Best of all they begin their journey to freedom.
9
Giving Up Bottled Water
Like last year, BlogHer will not be providing bottled water at the
conference. Thanks to sponsor Filtrete Water Filtration Products
from 3M, each attendee will receive a BPA-free water bottle in
your BlogHer tote bag. We’ll have water available throughout the
conference space, including in the back of every breakout room,
for you to fill up during the day.
Power Down, Don’t Just Sleep
Whenever possible, unplug your electronics instead of just setting them to “standby.”
According to the Department of Energy, up to 20% of each American’s electricity bill
comes from appliances and gadgets sitting on standby.
The Hilton New York: Partners in Sustainability
The Hilton is making an effort everyday to be more sustainable and eco-friendly, from
water-efficient bathroom fixtures to in-room occupancy sensors. But they need your
help too! Remember to turn off lights, re-use bed linens and towels, and even request no
housekeeping, which can save an average of 14.3 gallons of water per day. Learn more
about The Hilton’s efforts here.
Recycling, Reducing and Using Re-usable Materials
BlogHer tries to use re-usable materials wherever possible throughout
the conference. You won’t find a paper plate or cup at any of our
meals or breaks. Even the hotel keycards, sponsored by Nickelodeon,
will be produced from re-used materials.
The BlogHer ’10 Green Team
Our thanks go out to the entire Green Team for their advice, guidance and support of
BlogHer.

The Agenda…and Beyond!
THURSDAY, AUGUST 5TH
Although the conference doesn’t officially kick-off until Friday morning, there are plenty
of activities and parties happening on Thursday to welcome you to BlogHer and the Big
Apple.
The White House Project Workshop
BlogHer and The White House Project, both non-partisan organizations, have partnered
to co-produce a new, half-day workshop the day before BlogHer ‘10. This workshop
is designed to help women bloggers with a politics and public policy bent take their
political leadership one step further and become aspiring public servants.
This workshop features panel conversations with women who have successfully
attained various levels of government office. Speaker and attendees will share personal
experiences and concrete advice about how to advance political ambitions. A skills
training session will provide the kind of practical, tactical information needed to craft a
strategy and plan to run for elective office.
Learn more about the White House Project Workshop here.
Register here.
Volunteer a day of service with T-Mobile
BlogHer attendees have the opportunity to support the local community through T-Mobile
Huddle Up – a national community outreach program that connects kids, primarily from
single-parent families in high-need, urban communities to positive people, places, and
programs. BlogHer volunteers will join T-Mobile employees on a local community project.

BlogHer Community Parties
There are three official community parties on Thursday evening, all at The Hilton.
Social Fiesta, 6-8pm: Join us to celebrate Latinas and Hispanic culture at
the Social Fiesta. We’ll be reveling in the different Latin flavors, music,
colors and art, with plenty of food and drinks, and of course, lots of
dancing! What better way could there be to kick off BlogHer ‘10 than with
a fiesta de culturas? Co-hosted by Latinas in Social Media, learn more
about this event and how you can RSVP here. Sponsored by Qué Rica
Vida and MyBlogSpark.
The People’s Party, 7-10pm: Whether you’re a mommy, political, green,
life, fashion or any other kind of blogger, all are welcome at the 4th Annual
People’s Party. Come one, come all and celebrate all bloggerhood to kick
off BlogHer ‘10. The People’s Party is co-hosted by: Velveteen Mind, The
Bloggess, IzzyMom, Motherbumper and Oh, the Joys! Learn more about
The People’s Party and how you can RSVP here.
Queerosphere, 9-11pm: The second annual Queerosphere is held in
honor of the 100th anniversary of one of the most significant events in
lesbian literature and in the history of the arts: Alice B. Toklas moving into
the Parisian apartment of Gertrude Stein in 1910. Queer bloggers and
allies will gather in a special salon at the Hilton for cocktails, coffee and
conversation -- to connect and celebrate on the eve of the conference.
Learn more and RSVP here.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 6TH
The official first day of the conference, Friday is when things really get going.
BlogHer Voices of the Year Keynote, Reception & Gala and Art Auction
curated by kirtsy, with the auction benefitting the Nature Conservancy’s
Gulf Coast efforts, 6-10pm:
The 2010 BlogHer Voices of the Year will honor 90 bloggers as finalists in
the categories of Humor, Opinion/Editorial, Life, Geeky/Nerdy and Design.
From this group of 90 writers, a committee of curators will select 15 bloggers to share
their work at the Friday Community Keynote at BlogHer ‘10.
Our goal is to help the BlogHer community shine a spotlight on the bloggers whose
creativity deserves international recognition. This is not about popularity, or about how
many followers or fans anyone has. It is about what the Community Keynote and the
BlogHer Voice of the Week have always been about: Incredible words, designs, voices.
The Keynote will be immediately followed by an hour long Reception and then our
Welcome Gala. with entertainment provided by Walmart. We’ll party the night away,
celebrating the fabulous bloggers from our keynote and all our amazing attendees.
(That’s you!)
12
SATURDAY, AUGUST 7TH
So long, farewell, auf weidersehen, goodnight! The last day of the conference, Saturday
doesn’t disappoint!
Morning Keynote: The International Activist Blogger Scholarship
Recipients
Our second annual International Activist Blogger scholarship program highlights the work
of women who are galvanizing social change and social justice across their communities
-- and by the very public and distributed nature of the Internet -- across the world. For
some of them, this work is not without risk, yet still they continue. Because raising their
voices is not a luxury or a whim or an option. It is a necessity.
This year BlogHer presents its International Activist Blogger panel as a keynote, so that
every attendee can be inspired, right along with us, by the work of our four impressive
recipients. Perhaps their work can serve as a catalyst to activate each of us and our
communities around the issues closest to our hearts. This year’s recipients include
Esra’a Al Shafei from Bahrain, who is the founder of MidEastYouth.com; Dushiyanthini
Kanagasabapathipillai from Sri Lanka, who publishes Humanity Ashore; Marie Trigona
from Argentina, who publishes Latin American Activism; and Freshta Basij-Rasikh from
Afghanistan, who writes for the Afghan Women’s Writing Project.
Outbound Shipping
Love the amazing conference swag, but don’t love having to
pack it all into your already over-stuffed suitcases? Never fear!
Conference sponsor PepsiCo is returning this year with the Outbound Shipping Suite.
Attendees will have to cover their own shipping fees, but they’ll have boxes, shipping
labels and helpful staff all on-hand to help you ship home your BlogHer loot. Be sure to
visit them on Saturday afternoon (it will NOT be open on Sunday) on Level 2 of The
Hilton, across from the Registration/Information desk.
Community Parties
There are four official community parties on Saturday evening, as well as the BlogHer
hosted Chill Space, all at The Hilton.
A Green Affair, 6-9pm: At A Green Affair you will learn it really is okay to
cheat on your bleach. Like Kermit says, “It’s not easy being green,” but A
Green Affair will show you that being green-er is a breeze. This party will
feature lots of eco-friendly elements for attendees to enjoy - you definitely
don’t want to miss this! A Green Affair is co-hosted by 3 Green Angels.
Learn more about this event and how you can register here. Co-sponsored
by Bosch and Microsoft Hohm.
13
Blogalicious, 6-9pm: Sip a cocktail, dance and lounge with your fellow
BlogHer attendees, and enjoy a Girls Night Out in New York City at
Blogalicious! We’re in a Bloggy and Empire State of Mind. The second
annual Blogalicious party is co-hosted by the ladies of MamaLaw, the
founders of Blogalicious Weekend, the one and only social media
conference devoted to uniting women of color. Learn more about
Blogalicious and how to RSVP here.
Sparklecorn, 8-11pm: People of Earth, please to be putting your party
pants on, because Sparklecorn is back at BlogHer this year and glitterier
than evah! Unicorns? Check. Sparkles? Check. Booze and cake? Check.
Dancing? Check. Really, need we say more? (Umm ... no, you had me at
unicorns.) The second annual Sparklecorn is co-hosted by MamaPop.
Learn more about this party and how to RSVP here.
CheeseburgHer, 10pm-1am: A BlogHer Rite of Passage, CheeseburgHer
began at BlogHer ‘07, when a group of blogger friends decided to throw
an impromptu hotel room party involving cheeseburgers, bags on heads
and fun, and thus a tradition was born. There will be beverages, burgers (of
course), hats made out of burger bags, and lots of photos - you definitely
won’t want to miss the 4th annual CheeseburgHer! Learn more about
CheeseburgHer and how you can RSVP here.
The BlogHer Chill Space, 6PM-11PM: In addition to these amazing community parties,
BlogHer will be hosting a Chill Space on Saturday evening. This will be a space to relax,
unwind, nosh, imbibe and hang with your blogging buddies between the parties. There
will also be two Birds of a Feather meetups throughout the evening in the Chill Space,
Patient bloggers will gather from 6-8pm and Food bloggers from 8-10pm. And unlike
every other party on Saturday evening: No RSVP required. Open all night; open to all
attendee
Throughout the Conference
Aside from our keynotes and sessions, there are plenty of things to check out throughout
the duration of the conference.
Geek, Writing & Job Labs
This year BlogHer’s Geek Lab will be joined by a new Writing Lab and Job Lab. Each
Lab is actually two rooms...one in which pre-programmed panels and Room of Your
Own sessions will be held throughout both days, and a second where ad hoc hacking,
troubleshooting, networking, confabbing and perhaps even quiet reflection and writing
can be done!! The Geek Lab is BlogHer’s Technical Track. Sample sessions include
“Fight Spam and Hackers! Plugging Security Holes in Your Social Media Life” and “How
to Create (Or Massively Alter) a WordPress Theme.” The Writing Lab will cover how
to best showcase your wonderful words! Sample sessions include “Writing Inspiration:
Stoke Your Creativity” and “Humor Writing.” The Job Lab is the suggestion and brain
14
child of HR blogging expert Laurie Ruettimann. Let’s face it, the economy is still wreaking
havoc on our lives, and BlogHer has always been a place where business gets done.
Sample sessions include “Self-Marketing: Resume and Social Network Profile Clinic”
and “Get and Stay Hired: Social Media and Technical Skills for Today’s Job Market.” The
Labs will be open throughout both days, and lunch will be served in each Lab both days,
so attend the formal Lab sessions, but also please plan to take advantage of the more
free-form opportunity to connect, collaborate and contemplate that the Labs provide.
The Writing Lab Lounge is sponsored by Propel
The Geek Lab Lounge is sponsored by Microsoft, Kraft and Mozilla
The Job Lab Lounge is sponsored by University of Phoenix
The Lactation Lounge
A BlogHer Conference staple, the Lactation Lounge is back once
again, thanks to sponsor Lansinoh Laboratories. Many attendees
will bring their infants to the conference and this is a private room
set aside for them. Located on Level 2 of the Hilton, there will be comfortable seating, a
changing area and a fridge to store milk and formula.
BlogHer Bookstore
The BlogHer Bookstore will be on Level 2 of the Hilton and will feature a variety of
published works from some of our BlogHer community members and attendees, as well
as signings by some of the authors. We’ll have a schedule of book signings in our on-site
handout, so be sure to pick that up at Registration and stop by!
The Volt Recharge Lounge: The Official BlogHer Internet Café
With so much going on at the conference, we know how important it is to have a place
to relax and recharge (both yourself and your electronics). The Volt Recharge Lounge
will be on Level 2 of the Hilton and will have comfortable seating areas for relaxation
and networking, and plenty of recharging stations for every mobile and laptop device
imaginable, all thanks to conference sponsor Chevrolet.
The Expo Hall
BlogHer ’10 will have over 90 sponsors this year, many of them exhibiting in our 2-level
Expo Hall onsite at the conference. Not only do our sponsors help offset the costs of the
conference for attendees, but they’re planning some really fun stuff for you too! Be sure
15
to stop by both levels of the Expo Hall and pick up some cool swag, film a video-blog
or try out some new products. And who knows? Maybe you’ll even run into a celebrity
or two?
Sponsor Suites
Looking for a more personal way to engage with sponsors? In addition to our Expo Hall,
we will have a number of sponsors with special suites in the Hilton. As in the Expo Hall,
our Sponsor Suites will be showcasing products, giving out swag and providing a more
intimate setting to engage with sponsors and your fellow attendees.

Visting NYC
Get by in the Big Apple, with a little help from your BlogHer friends
You may not have known this, but BlogHer has wanted to take the conference to New
York City, ever since its inception in 2005. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be headed to
the city that never sleeps this year! There are so many things to see and do, and who
better to share their favorite sights and bites than the NYC and Travel bloggers from our
community?
• Vist the BlogHer ’10 Group and check out our Things To Do in NYC thread. Several
BlogHer.com attendees have already chimed in with tidbits about what they’re doing
and where they’re eating in the city.
• Want a great place to get a bird’s-eye-view of the city? NYCityMama recommends
the “Top of the Rock”, Rockafeller Center, that is. Check out her post and other New
York recommendations here.
• Need to escape the hustle and bustle with a quiet dinner? Losing in the City raved
about The Grocery in Brooklyn. Read all about her recent night out here.
• Bringing your kids to BlogHer? Check out TIGERS the Exhibition: Tracking the
Legend at Pier 17. Single Mama NYC went recently and loved it. Read all about her
visit here.
• In the mood for brunch? BlogHer’s own Jes Ferris recommends Bubby’s Pie Co. in
Tribeca.
• Motherhood in NYC has a great list of places to see (and places to avoid). And who
knew the Saks Fifth Avenue Shoe Department had its own zip code?
This year, we’re truly lucky to be at the Hilton. Perfectly located, there’s plenty to do and
see, all within walking distance of the hotel. A few places you won’t want to miss:
Rockefeller Plaza
Museum of Modern Art
Shopping on Fifth Avenue
Central Park
Times Square
