SmartCard
HELPS YOU TRAVEL SMARTER, FASTER
AND SECURELY
Rea Vaya smartcard is the quickest, easiest and most convenient way to
pay for your travel fares using Rea Vaya. It is one of the first public
transport systems in the world where bank cards are used to pay for
distance based fares.
Advantages of using the Smartcard?
¡ You no longer have to carry cash with you to pay for your travel, just
tap your Smartcard.
¡ The Smartcard automatically calculates how far you travel and you
only pay only the distance you travel.
¡ The Smartcard is re-useable and convenient. You can load cash on the
card at Rea Vaya stations, selected vendors and retail outlets as well
as at ABSA ATMs.
¡ You can use your Smartcard to pay for goods at stores for R200 per
transaction.
¡ You can load up to R3 000 per month with a maximum of R1 500 at
any given time.
¡ If your card is lost, when you report it, the funds will be transferred to
the new card within 30 days.
How much will I pay?

How the
SmartCard works
Step 1: Collect and activate the smartcard
Get your Smartcard from Rea Vaya stations for R20 or at the
following Customer Care Centres at our Rea Vaya stations for
FREE if you register;
¡
¡
¡
¡
¡
¡
Carlton Centre East Rea Vaya Station (CBD)
Johannesburg Art Gallery Station (Joubert Park)
Orlando Police Station (Orlando)
UJ Sophiatown Station (Melville)
Indingiliza Terminus (Dobsonville)
Bosmont Station (Bosmont)
The cashier at the station or customer care officer will help you
to activate your card by asking you to use a personalised pin
code.
Step 2: Loading money into your Smartcard
Load money into your Smartcard at the Rea Vaya stations,
selected vendors and retail outlets, as well as at ABSA ATMs.
Immediately after loading at the cashier, you will be given a slip
indicating the balance and the loading fee.
You must have a minimum amount of R12.50 on your card.
You also have to pay a loading fee of 2.5% or R1.50 if you top
up with less than R60. We urge you to load money once a
week or once a month to save on the loading fees.
Step 3: Begin the journey with a 'tap in' at the stations or
in the bus from a bus stop
Rea Vaya journey begins with a 'tap in' at the stations or in the
bus from the bus stop. Rea Vaya stations and buses have
validator machines. You simply tap your Smartcard onto the
validator and the gate or turnstile will open if you have
sufficient funds to travel.
Step 4: End the journey with a 'tap out' at the stations or
in the bus at the bus stop
Rea Vaya journey ends with a 'tap out' at the validators at a
station or in the bus at a bus stop. You only tap at the beginning
and end of your journey even if you transfer from a feeder to a
trunk service. If you do not 'tap out' you will be penalised up
to R12.50 next time you use your card.
Step 5: Check your balance for the next travel
Check your balance at the station for your next journey. Always
keep a minimum amount of R12.50 in your Smartcard for you
to travel. Keep your Smartcard safe. Keep your Pin a secret.
Enjoy your next travel.
If you believe that a mistake has been made and the Rea Vaya
owes you money, you are advised to appeal by completing and
submitting a “Customer Appeal Form” at one of the Customer
Care Centres of Rea Vaya closest to you.
The Customer Care Agent will log the appeal and provide you
with a reference number. The appeal process will be resolved
within seven working (7) days. If you are successful, your funds
will be refunded to your Smartcard.

How to find your way
with Rea Vaya
PLAN YOUR REA VAYA TRIP USING THE
MAPS IN THIS BOOKLET
There are three kinds of services:
¡
¡
¡
Trunk route services (T): These are buses that run only on the
dedicated lane and stop at the BRT stations.
The legend for the strip maps is
as follows:
Stadium
Complementary services (C): These are bus services which start
or end on routes in mixed traffic but join the trunk route.
Commuter rail
Feeder services (F): These are bus services that feed the trunk
route – they start in mixed traffic and end at a Rea Vaya Station.
Taxi rank
On the next pages we have strip maps which indicate all the places that
the Rea Vaya buses stop.
They either stop at a Rea Vaya Station if it is a trunk service or at a Rea
Vaya bus stop if it is a complementary or feeder service.
