Dear Friends,
In last year’s annual report, I wrote of a shifting focus from “building houses” to “revitalizing
communities.” Looking back over the past year, the completion of 40 homes is certainly
an accomplishment, but even more so is what that means for our family partners and the
communities they now call home.
We know that Habitat’s model of community revitalization not only benefits individuals through
better health and education outcomes, but also communities through an increased tax base and
a reduction in crime.

OUR MISSION
It is exciting to see future homeowners as they go through our Homebuyer Academy and
complete their volunteer “sweat equity” hours getting to know their future neighbors and
making plans for how they will enhance their neighborhood!
Even as neighborhoods are strengthened, with the celebration of Habitat Chesapeake’s 400th
home completion about to happen, we are looking forward to continuing to expand Habitat’s
work in Central Maryland. An important step in this process is our work to prepare to merge
with Sandtown Habitat this fall. Together we bring more than 57 years of affordable housing
development experience to qualified, hard-working families and individuals in Central
Maryland. This merger ensures that we will be able to meet the ever-increasing demand for safe,
decent, and affordable housing for generations to come.
It has truly been an incredible year, and as we prepare for even more growth ahead, we have you
– our family partners, board, staff, donors, corporate partners, sponsors and volunteers –
to thank for our continued success.
Sincerely,
y
Mike Posko
CEO
Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to
build homes, communities and hope.
Habitat Chesapeake serves communities throughout Baltimore City, and Anne
Arundel, Baltimore and Howard counties.
Family
Services
Much of Habitat Chesapeake’s success is measured by the number of families we
are able to partner with and match with homes throughout Central Maryland.
Building affordable, energy-efficient homes is the tangible outcome of the work
we do, but our families are the heart. Thanks to the support of many donors
throughout the year, we have been able to expand the services we provide to
families that are working hard to fulfill the dream of affordable homeownership.
With your support, we are proud of the following achievements:
•
Settled homes for 40 families, the most ever in a given fiscal year.
•
Hosted 10 orientation sessions to inform interested candidates about our
homeownership program, averaging 150 people in attendance.
•
Provided services and connections to resources to more than 6,000 families
through orientation sessions, community meetings, homeownership classes,
a free tax preparation site and a unique partnership with Consumer Credit
Counseling Services of Maryland.
•
Logged 3,489 hours of “sweat equity” volunteer time with our Habitat
families – 1,962 in construction; 1,112 in ReStores; and 415 in other
community programs.
•
Prevented 23 Habitat families from losing their home to foreclosure by
providing additional services tailored to the family’s specific need.

Habitat Chesapeake is blessed with many
remarkable people who come to us with
amazing stories of struggle and success. Our
family partners are hardworking, determined,
have often overcome great challenges in life
and are still looking for that hand up. And
it’s impossible to talk about successful family
partners without mentioning Michael.
housing support, which allowed him to rent
an apartment of his own after his parents were
no longer able to provide his care. Michael’s
goal has always been to live independently,
so he contacted Habitat for Humanity of
the Chesapeake to talk about his options for
affordable specialty housing.
“Unfortunately, I lived with no doors inside
my apartment as my power chair could barely
clear the doorways. I have a lot of bulky
medical equipment and there was no storage
space. I navigated around my commode chair,
Hoyer lift, hospital bed, suction machine
and ventilators.”
Michael was born with muscular dystrophy
that has progressed throughout his life
causing him to lose both his ability to walk
and his arm function—all before his mid20s. He now lives with quadriplegia and
respiratory failure, depending on a power
wheelchair and a ventilator to breathe.
His disability prevents him from obtaining
a job despite having earned his Associates
Degree. He lives on disability with some
But Michael doesn’t let muscular dystrophy
stop him from enjoying his life. While he
can only wiggle his fingers and maintain a
small degree of head control, his speech and
intelligence are not impaired. He stays active
in his church and community and explores
photography with his adaptive camera —
entering photos in the Maryland State Fair
photography competition every year, even
submitting photos from time spent doing
his volunteer “sweat equity” with Habitat
Chesapeake.
Michael also has turned his love of writing
and public events into a career opportunity,
writing a blog for The Baltimore Examiner that
covers free and low-cost family events.
In addition to taking the initiative to purchase
a home that is adapted to his disability
through Habitat’s program, Michael looked
into working with a service animal to help
him maintain an active lifestyle. And this isn’t
just any service animal. Kathy is a specially
trained Capuchin monkey from Helping
Hands Monkey Helpers for the Disabled, a
Boston-based organization whose mission
is to serve individuals with severe mobility
disorders.
The only individual in Maryland with a
helper monkey, Michael says, “Kathy’s manual
dexterity and intelligence helps me to be as
independent as possible.”
Michael is a constant beam of light to the
staff members he works with at Habitat
Chesapeake. His patience, sense of humor
and sincere gratitude makes him a joy to have
in the program.
Michael moved into his new home in Mt.
Winans in October 2013. With groundfloor access, wide doorways and hallways,
a specialized shower, accommodations for
his team of nurses and helper monkey and a
generator, Michael is feeling right at home.
Welcome home, Michael!

Habitat Chesapeake officially signed on as a neighborhood revitalization
affiliate in the summer of 2013. By embracing neighborhood revitalization
as a philosophy, rather than just a program, Habitat Chesapeake is shifting
the paradigm from “houses completed” to “families served” holistically
through a coalition of community partners, including schools, businesses,
churches, other nonprofits and, of course, residents.
While Habitat’s primary role within neighborhood revitalization remains
building and rehabbing homes, we now are extending that scope to
include performing a range of other “Repair and Renew” services within
designated communities. Habitat Chesapeake’s Community Engagement
department also is deeply involved in cultivating relationships within the
community and providing community organizing support. The ultimate
goal remains the empowerment of homeowners, the improvement of their
quality of life and their active engagement in the decisionmaking that
directly impacts their community.
Vision
Neighborhoods across the country are revitalized into vibrant, safe and inviting places to live for current and future residents. This will happen through
the hard work of engaged citizens, partnerships with civic and business groups and a renewed community spirit.
Community Engagement
Woodbourne-McCabe is Habitat Chesapeake’s first Neighborhood Revitalization-designated community. Beginning with a shared vision, Habitat
Chesapeake partnered with the Woodbourne-McCabe Community Association and York Road Partnership to listen to their dreams, learn about their
plans, and labor alongside them in the revitalization process.
Accomplishments
•
Actively partnering with communities in four Baltimore City neighborhoods: Woodbourne-McCabe, Washington Village, Brooklyn and Mt. Winans.

ReStore
Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores that sell building
materials, furniture, appliances, and much more at discounted prices. To accomplish its
mission, Habitat Chesapeake ReStores accept donated items then resell them to the public
at discounted prices, with 100 percent of profits generated invested back into the Habitat
program.
In addition to supporting affordable homeownership opportunities, ReStores also support
a healthier planet. By recycling used items, Habitat Chesapeake ReStores provide an outlet
through which the community can donate items to be reused, diverting millions of pounds of
material from local landfills.

A Habitat
Presented by
On September 28, 2013, HabiTown took place at Baltimore Inner Harbor’s West
Shore Park. The festival, produced by Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake and
sponsored by PayPal, brought diverse partners together—nonprofit and for-profit
organizations, donors, volunteers and more—to build community and awareness
for the 15 teams’ favorite nonprofits.
Each team had only four hours to complete an 8' x 8' structure representing a
significant part of a typical Central Maryland town. We were joined by four
celebrity judges: Director of Education Foundation for Baltimore County Public
Schools Debbie Phelps (and mother of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps),
Howard County Executive Ken Ulman; the American Visionary Arts Museum’s
Rebecca Hoffberger; and WBAL’s Jennifer Franciotti.
Five winning teams received $1,000 each for a nonprofit of their choice:
• Most Creative (Paul’s Place)
• Most Environmentally Friendly (Cross Street Partners - Design Collective /
Habitat Chesapeake)
• Most Mission-Driven (R2i / There Goes My Hero)
• Most Impressive Design (Carver Vo Tech / Build-A-Block Coalition)
• People’s Choice (Advance / Believe in Tomorrow)
HabiTown Challenge was attended by more than 1,000 people, featured three
live bands, assorted food trucks from The Gathering, a photo booth and other
fun activities.
