In Spirit and Truth
by Ray Makeever
In spirit and truth we come to worship our God:
Source of all living, joy of our thanksgiving,
Who has made us, redeemed us,
And leads us with a love that frees us –
Jesus, in spirit and truth.
In spirit and truth we give our burdens to God,
Trusting the promise peace will come upon us.
We are creatures, defenseless,
We sense in Christ a life that’s endless.
Mend us in spirit and truth.
In spirit and truth we come with thanks to our God,
Who in all kindness comes to us and finds us.
Please protect us, respect us,
And with your gentle touch caress us.
Bless us in spirit and truth.
In spirit and truth we gather at the table,
Sharing Christ’s body; Holy Lamb of God,
We know you heed us and feed us
To do the same for those who need us.
Lead us in spirit and truth.
In spirit and truth and grace that fills our living
We love our neighbors, blessings from our Savior.
Christ, be with us and guide us,
Abide with us your faithful servants,
Fervent in spirit and truth.

* CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS
Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who calls us beloved children, who gathers us
into one flock, who guides us into all truth. Amen.
Let us confess our sins, trusting that God will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Silence is kept for reflection.
Faithful and just God, we confess that we are captive to doubt and fear, bound by
the ways that lead to death. We have not loved our sisters and brothers as you
have first loved us. Forgive us, God of mercy. Let your Holy Spirit work in us to
change our lives and make us new, that we may know the abundant life given in
Jesus Christ, our risen Lord.
Amen.
In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and sent the Son to atone
for our sins. In the name of + Jesus Christ, I announce to you that your sins are forgiven. Let the perfect love of God cast out fear, fill you with joy, and inspire you to
live for others. Amen.
* PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray.
O God, you have prepared for those who love you joys beyond understanding.
Pour into our hearts such love for you that, loving you above all things, we may
obtain your promises, which exceed all we can desire; through Jesus Christ, your
Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
FIRST READING: Acts 10:44-48
44
While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard
the word. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were
astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the
Gentiles, 46for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God.
Then Peter said, 47Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these
people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited
him to stay for several days.
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
* THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE (spoken by the pastor)
* LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as
we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us
from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
SECOND READING: 1 John 5:1-6
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and
everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2By this we know that we
love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments.
And his commandments are not burdensome, 4for whatever is born of
God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world,
our faith. 5Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that
Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is the one who came by water and blood,
Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood.
And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
* PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
Confident that the resurrection of Christ has defeated sin and death, we offer our
prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need.
. . . ,let us pray.
Have mercy, O God.
Holy God, by the death and resurrection of your Son, you have granted new life, abundant renewal, and salvation. Hear our prayers for the sake of the one who has set us
free, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If
you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have
kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these
things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be
complete. 12This is my commandment, that you love one another as I
have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life
for one's friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I
do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know
what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have
made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You
did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear
fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask
him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love
one another.
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
