Term 3 UPCOMING EVENTS AUGUST Fri 7th Nepean Zone Athletics Carnival 7:05am Week 3 30th July, 2015 Dear Parents, Here’s a little modern day parable: “A certain king wished to test the wisdom of the sages in his kingdom, so he devised a test for groups of them. Without being allowed to see an elephant, an animal unknown to them, each group was asked to describe what it looked like on the basis of touching a single part of its anatomy. As might be expected, the king’s opinions of his wise men after the test were considerably lower than they had been before it. The elephant in the story, of course, is a symbol of God; the moral of the story being that humankind can only know God in a very limited sense.” Adapted from writing by Pope Benedict XV1. Knowing God is the ultimate ambition of any Christian and hope is the virtue that makes us want to know God. It is hope that motivates us to desire eternal life as the final happiness. It is hope that answers our strong desire for happiness; it gives us strength to avoid discouragement as it supports us in times of self-concern when feelings of disconnectedness from others and loneliness might be strong. Alexander Pope, the English poet, penned the famous words: “Hope springs eternal in the human breast Man never is, but always, to be blest.” Perhaps, Alexander Pope was expressing a desire for eternal life, the fulfilment of hope. Certainly, Dante in his work, The Inferno, had no illusions about what happens when eternal life is lost, when he said that the sign over the gates of hell reads, “Abandon all hope you who enter here.” On a lighter note, there is an old joke about a man who prayed week after week that he would win the lottery, and in the end God said to him, “For heaven’s sake, give yourself some hope – buy a ticket!” Only) Emotion Coaching Parent Course Thu 10th Dance Fever Sat 12th PRG Spring Fair Tue 15th 1-2-3 Magic & HO P E Challenge Emotion Coaching Parent Course FAITH Corpus Christi Primary School Page 2 The Christian Scriptures emphasise the importance of hope in the life of a Christian by referring to hope in a variety of ways: “Hope the anchor of the soul.” Heb. 6:19. “He is the God of hope,” Rom. 15:13. “Because of his Resurrection we also have hope for resurrection.” 1 Peter 1:3. St Paul, in particular, has many encouraging things to say to us about hope: “Now may the God of hope fill you with joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” “Now faith means we are confident in what we hope for, convinced of what we do not see.” Heb. 11:1. And that brings us back to the king and his elephant and how we can only have a limited sense of God, because, as yet, we cannot see him to know him fully. Oliver Goldsmith, the Irish writer and physician, in his poetic way tells us to keep seeking God even in our non-believing society: “Hope, like a gleaming taper’s light, Adorns and cheers our way; And still, as darker grows the night, Emits a brighter ray.” “Spirit of God within us, strengthen our virtue of hope, so that we enjoy our lives knowing that, ultimately, we will share eternal life with you. Amen.” Peace and Best Wishes. Richard Blissenden Principal RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Dear Parents, FAITH INFORMATION First Reading Ex 16:2-4. 12-15 Manna from heaven. A beginning point for discussion of this week's Gospel with children: What are some of your favourite things? Which of these are important because they keep you alive and well? In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us he gives us the bread of life, himself. How is Jesus good for us? The more we believe in him and do what he asks the more we have Jesus within us. We pray that Jesus will be with us this week and fill us with his goodness. © Creative Ministry Resources Pty Ltd CATHOLIC CULTURE The group sessions for the sacrament of First Communion commenced this week for any further information please contact Mrs Marie Cottee at the parish on 47301249. Corpus Christi Primary School Page 3 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION - Continued SOCIAL JUSTICE This term we will be supporting the work of Penrith Kitchen. In the past we have had a wonderful response to this social justice venture and we hope that it will once again be a great success. PILGRIMAGE The Church of the Multiplication is in the area of the Sea of Galilee. It has some beautiful mosaics but one of them particularly highlights the story of Jesus feeding the 5000. This mosaic shows 2 fish and 4 loaves of bread, however, scripture tells us there were 5 loaves. This raises the question ‘Where is the fifth loaf?’ The answer to this question from the artists who depict this story is that the fifth loaf has been shared with YOU. Capernaum is known as the town of Jesus. Jesus often went to this town to be with his apostles. This was the town where Peter lived with his family before he started his work with Jesus. Two discos will run on the night – one for Kinder to Year 2 and one for Years 3-6. NIGHT OF NOTABLES Last Thursday evening our Year 6 students presented their research work to parents, grandparents and invited guests in the hall and year 6 Learning Spaces. The night was the culminating event which followed months of research and preparation. Night of Notables combines Creative Arts with Research and Presentation Skills. Our Year Six students each researched a different notable person from the field of the Creative Arts and then show cased their research in creative ways including dressing and acting as their notable person. Our CARST team of Mrs Antonelli, Mrs Micallef and Mrs Hartog were supported by the Year 6 teachers – Miss Ohlsen, Mrs Ahern, Miss Jeffery and Mrs Talbot. Congratulations to all involved. KISS AND DROP Please be mindful of other families waiting to drop off students and move out of the Kiss and Drop area once your children have been safely dropped off. Children should only exit from the left hand side of the vehicle and can do so at any point along the drop zone. Please note that this is not a parking zone. The intention is that drivers do not wait in these zones and that they stay in the vehicle so that throughput is streamlined and traffic queues are minimised. In reality it only takes a few inconsiderate drivers to overstay in these zones and the system breaks down leading to frustration and traffic delays.
