Geoje-do or Geoje Island (alternative spelling Koje) is Korea’s second largest island. Located off the southern coast of Gyeongsangnam province, the island is joined to land by bridges to Busan and Tongyeong. Since December 2010, the Geoga Bridge has provided a road link to Busan. Geoje Island features several natural harbors. Shipbuilding is the largest industry on the island. The second and third largest shipyards in South Korea are both located on the island. Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, DSME, is located in Okpo and Samsung Heavy Industries, SHI, in the island’s largest district of Gohyeon. The population of Geoje city is 230.000 people. For many Geoje Island is considered a holiday destination. There are a number of beaches on the island, of which Deokpo, Wahyeon, Heungnam and Gujora Beach are some of the most popular. Geoje has a very mountainous terrain. Famous mountains of Geoje include Mt Guksabong (462m) and Mt Daegeumsan (437m). Korea has four distinct seasons. The official summer months are July and August. The rainy season usually occurs around July or August. Weather warnings for high yellow sand index, pollen count and typhoons in the area can be followed on http://web.kma.go.kr/eng/ and www.w365.com. Korea is nine hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Korean women do not change their family names after marriage. Always remove your shoes before entering a Korean home. Sharing food from relationships closer. one bowl is thought to make Koreans love light colours. Never use red ink when writing a person’s name. Red is only used for a deceased person. Patting children on the back or on the head expresses warm feelings. The Korean language uses honorific and makes a distinction between formal and causal expressions. Formal expressions usually end with “Yo” and are used towards elders or unfamiliar people. Informal expressions are used between friends. Blowing one’s nose in front of others is considered bad manners. Throughout its long history, Korea has respected the elderly. It’s very common in Korea to see younger people give their seats to older people on the bus. When you give something to, or receive something from, someone older, you should use two hands. While talking with someone older, it is considered very rude to look directly at them. As you take the bath nude there are separate bathing areas for men and women. There are several pools at a bath house with different temperatures or different mineral contents. Before entering a pool you need to wash yourself thoroughly and rinse off all soap using one of the showers. Long hair is recommended to be tied up while in the bath. Body scrubbing is part of the Korean bath houses. Using a special towel, people scrub their bodies to exfoliate. Most bath houses also offer a body scrubbing service. The body scrub usually lasts an hour and includes a massage. Korean saunas are similar to Jimjilbangs (bath houses). Many public bath houses also offer saunas. VII · 22 In association with RESTAURANTS Geoje Expat Guide · February 2013 Geoje Expat Guide RESTAURANTS By OIS Parent Teacher Committee February 2013 VIII · 1 In association with KOREAN CUISINE AND TABLE MANNERS Korean cuisine is made up of rice, soup, and three to four side dishes, including Kimchi. Koreans use a spoon to eat rice and soup, and chopsticks for side dishes. Koreans don’t hold their bowls or plates while eating, and believe that sharing food from one bowl stimulates close relationships. KIMCHI is a fermented vegetable dish that can be stored for a long time. There are many varieties of Kimchi and they differ due to region and /or ingredients. Although Kimchi is a basic side dish, it is also a major ingredient in other popular dishes, such as Kimchi Jjikae (Kimchi stew), Kimchi pancakes, Kimchi fried rice, and Kimchi ramyeon. Kimchi is gaining worldwide popularity because of its nutritional value. DDEOK is a traditional Korean rice cake served during festive occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and traditional holidays. There are many kinds of Ddeok. During Lunar New Year celebrations all Koreans eat Ddeok-guk (rice cake soup). BIBIMBAP is mixed vegetables with rice. This is one of Korea’s most popular and healthy meals. Vegetables, a fried egg, and rice are mixed with different ingredients and Gochujang (Korean red pepper paste). BULGOGI is thin strips of marinated grilled meat (pork or beef). Sometimes it is cooked using a charcoal grill. GALBI is ribs, which can be either stewed or barbecued. SAMGYETANG is a nutritious soup that is very popular in the summer. A bowl of Samgyetang contains one small chicken, rice, ginseng, garlic, and jujubes. Koreans have traditionally eaten hot meat dishes, such as Samgyetang, on the three hottest days of the year to increase their stamina. SOJU, a traditional alcohol unique to Korea, is the most popular drink in the country. The average amount of alcohol is about 21%, and each province has its own brand of Soju. It goes especially well with Samgyepsal (pork barbeque), but Koreans like to drink it with any dish. VIII · 2 In association with RESTAURANTS Geoje Expat Guide · February 2013 STREET FOOD AND FAST FOOD There are many street vendors throughout Korea offering a full range of Korean snacks. One of the most popular street foods is DDUKBOKGI (rice cakes mixed with sweet, spicy Korean red pepper paste). Other famous snacks include UMUK (fish ball soup), TWIGIM (fried food), HODDUK (a hot pancake with black sugary syrup), and SUNDAI (Korean sausage). KIMBAB, a Korean style California Roll, is one of the most famous Korean foods. Seaweed around sticky rice, rolled around various vegetables, sausage, tuna, or cheese. Basic Kimbab usually costs W1,000 and is available at the many 24 hour Kimbab shops. Prices vary according to the ingredients. HANSOT LUNCH BOXES include many Korean dishes, such as Bulgogi, pork cutlets, curry, fried fish with rice, or kimchi fried rice. Quick and affordable. Prices range from W1.500-W4.000. MANDU is Korean style dumplings. Gogi/mixed meat, Mandu and Kimchi Mandu are the most popular. Mandu can be eaten fried or steamed. The price is typically W3.000 for ten pieces of Mandu. TASTES OF GEOJE Geoje’s cuisine is simple but offers a great authentic taste. It consists mainly of seafood. Some local dishes to try here are SAENG SEON HOE (raw fish), GUL GUI (grilled oysters), DAE GU TANG (fresh codfish soup), DODARI SSUKGUK (flounder soup with mugwort leaves), MULMEGI TANG (snailfish soup), MEONG GAE and SEONG GE BIBIMBAP (rice mixed with sea squirt & sea urchin,) BOLLAK GUI (grilled rockfish) and EO JUK (rice porridge with fish). Some of these dishes are seasonal and others are served all year around.
