FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY’S COLLEGE OF NURSING & HEALTH SCIENCES
ADDS NEW HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM
Program addresses growing need for healthcare team managers
MIAMI (March 7, 2012) – Florida International University’s College of Nursing & Health Sciences has
expanded its curricular offering with the addition of the new Health Services Administration education
department. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration (BHSA) which
complements the already diverse curricula provided by the CNHS’s other academic disciplines of Nursing,
Athletic Training, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy.
Originally a unit of the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, the Health Services
Administration department was transitioned to the CNHS to further embody the multi-disciplinary makeup of
today’s healthcare teams, including the management component.
“Today’s healthcare system needs expertly educated individuals to handle this critical ‘facilitator’ role that
combines politics, business, and science in managing the human and fiscal resources needed to deliver
effective health services,” said Dr. Ora L. Strickland, dean of the College. “As healthcare policy and insurance
reform continue to change, demand will be greater for administrators who can effectively mange procedure and
policy so that healthcare providers can still provide optimum patient care. Our College is ready to meet this
demand head-on.”
FIU’s BHSA program focuses on scientific and values-based approaches to healthcare management and
policies that promote better community healthcare with an emphasis on urban and multicultural populations.
Graduates will be prepared to be outstanding business managers at either an entire facility or a specific
department. During the program, students will become equipped to create and implement policy and
procedures, hire and supervise staff, control finances, order supplies, and coordinate long and short-term plans
with other healthcare managers.
