Nov 1811:01 AM November 24, 2014 The process of breaking down food into its usable parts is called digestion. There are two types of digestion: Chemical digestion – using chemicals to break down food and Mechanical digestion – physically breaking down food Digestion Nov 1810:44 AM Digestion begins in the mouth Saliva is the chemical in the mouth that begins the process of breaking down food. 2 point exercise your brain: (in complete sentences) 1. Where does digestion begin? Your teeth, tongue and lips continue the digestive process by mechanical digestion. Nov 1811:00 AM 2. What are the two types of digestion taking place in the human body? Nov 178:33 AM 2 Digestion1.notebook Peristalsis Peristalsis the “wavelike” muscle contractions that push the food throughout the digestive system. This keeps the food moving in one direction. November 24, 2014 Mouth and Salivary Glands • (6) Digestions Begins in the mouth • (1) Salivary Glands moisten the food so it is easier to swallow. • Saliva contains digestive enzymes that begin the process of breaking down food. (see spit is good for something) Nov 1811:03 AM Nov 1811:04 AM ( 7) Esophagus (8) Stomach Your esophagus is a soft tube that carries the food from your mouth to your stomach. It takes about 7 seconds for food to travel that distance. The stomach is an empty muscular sac that helps continue the process of digestion. The stomach muscle This allows the stomach acids to coat the food and continue the chemical digestion. Nov 1811:06 AM Nov 1811:07 AM 3 Digestion1.notebook THINK ABOUT IT? If the stomach is a muscle and so is the meat we eat, how come the stomach doesn’t eat itself? Nov 1812:28 PM Digestion Continues...... Please place all the remaining notes in your notebook. All notes today will be in green. 1. Take a look at the bottom half of the digestive system 2. Place notes in notebook 3. Demonstrate PERISTALSIS with Cheetoes Nov 1810:05 AM November 24, 2014 Mucus in the stomach protects it from digesting itself. A break in that lining creates an “ulcer”. Ulcers can be painful and dangerous, and any pain in the stomach should not be ignored. Nov 1812:29 PM DIGESTIVE HELPERS (organs that help with the digestive process) • (2) Liver – creates bile, a chemical that breaks up fat. • (3) Gallbladder – stores bile until you need to use it. Nov 1810:09 AM 4 Digestion1.notebook November 24, 2014 • (9)Pancreas – creates pancreatic juice to help break down food and insulin to control sugar levels in the blood stream. Nov 1810:12 AM Villi are the many “fingerlike” projections in the small intestine. They allow for a larger surface area where the body can absorb nutrients from the passing food. Nov 1810:16 AM (5) Small Intestine (getting down to business now) Most of digestion takes place in the small intestine. It is here that digestion continues and nutrients are absorbed into the body. These nutrients are used by the cells to create energy and allow the body to do its work. Nov 1810:13 AM Villi (4) Large Intestine The large intestine is all about the dirty work! You’ve absorbed all the nutrients, and the undigested waste must go. Undigested waste ﴾mostly fiber﴿ moves through the large intestine and has any excess liquid removed, and creates feces ﴾doo doo, poopy, you know what I mean﴿. Nov 1810:19 AM 5 Digestion1.notebook END OF THE LINE November 24, 2014 And They Lived Happily Every After. The End. The (10)rectum is about eight inches long and serves, basically, as a warehouse for poop. The rectum has little shelves in it called transverse folds. The rectum holds stool in place until you're ready to go to the bathroom. When you're ready, stool enters the lower rectum, moves into the anal canal, and then passes through the anus on its way out.
