Dr. George Kelling February 16, 2016 LEMIT is honored to host a discussion about “Broken Windows” by Dr. George Kelling on February 16, 2016. Dr. Kelling’s presentation is part of the newly created Larry T. Hoover Distinguished Speaker Series at LEMIT. Dr. George Kelling is among the most influential individuals in policing over the past 50 years. In 1972 he began working at the Police Foundation and conducted several influential studies, including the Kansas City Preventive Patrol Experiment and the Newark Foot Patrol Experiment. The Newark project laid the foundation for his well-known, 1982 article in The Atlantic, “Broken Windows,” with James Q. Wilson. During the late 1980’s Dr. Kelling developed the order-maintenance approaches in the New York City subways that led to dramatic crime reductions. Later, he was a close consultant of the New York City Police Department and helped develop successful crime reduction policies and practices. His work in New York City led to his book “Fixing Broken Windows: Restoring Order and Reducing Crime in our Communities,” that he co-authored with his wife Catherine M. Coles. Dr. Kelling is Emeritus Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University, a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University, and formerly a Fellow in the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
