Horticulture 276: Concrete Construction; 3.5 credits
Course Description
Introduces basic concrete and masonry construction techniques. Appropriate material choices
and site preparation included. Students practice skills through construction of simple projects.
Prerequisites: Placement into Math 080 or higher, Hort 103 and Hort 174

MATERIALS
All tools and materials are supplied for projects in class. Students may choose to construct a
small project on their own and will need to supply their own tools and supplies.
COURSE OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Identify and describe the aesthetic and functional aspects of available materials for
construction of landscape paths, patios and walls. [REASON]
2. Identify and describe construction techniques of paving with concrete, pavers and stone.
[COMMUNICATE]
3. Demonstrate appropriate techniques to estimate quantities of materials required for a patio
or path. [REASON]
4. Demonstrate skills and knowledge in order to construct and set a wooden form for a small
concrete pour. [ACT]

the class at least twice a week.

COURSE POLICIES
Be sure to dress for working outside. You will need warm clothes that you don’t mind dirtying,
rainwear, sturdy shoes and gloves. Safety equipment will be provided when using power tools.
Sturdy shoes and gloves are required equipment. If you arrive for class without these
items you will not be allowed to participate and will receive a zero for that class.
Please turn cell phones off or to vibrate.

There is a calendar on Canvas with due dates for all assignments.
Reading quizzes will be taken online. There will be a due date for each quiz after which the quiz
will not be available.
Since quizzes are online you will receive your grade immediately. You will have unlimited
attempts. Be careful with spelling.
There will be opportunities for extra credit.
Attendance is required. It is worth 18% of your grade. There are no excused absences. You do
however have opportunities to earn extra credit to make up for missed classes.


COURSE EXPECTATIONS

Students will have different expectations for their careers and thus different learning
outcome focuses. Therefore it will be important for students to be responsible for their own
learning goals. Students also have different learning styles. The instructor will make every
attempt to provide alternative means to access information of the course. Some of the
activities will require hands on participation and therefore class attendance and participation
is essential.
