ELIGIBILITY
Employees to notify the Board as soon as possible when absent due to sickness.
OTHER RELEVANT INFO
Regular employees earn at 1.5 days/month worked not to
exceed 120 days in any calendar year. Part-time
employees receive sick leave in proportion to the number of
days they work.

6-20 consecutive working days of absence requires a completed medical note
to the School Board office stating the intended date of return to work. More than
20 days required a Medical Certificate (on website) and requires receipt of a
Medical Certificate for Full Return to work 5 working days prior to return.

Illness in Family *
Up to 3 days for immediate family. Up to additional 2 days may be granted with
pay from sick leave. One paid day depending on the distance involved to attend a
funeral as a pallbearer.
Immediate family is defined as spouse, child, parent,
brother, sister, in-law of previous, grandparent, grandchild or
dependent relative or step-family.

Jury or Witness Duty*

Parental and
Adoptive Leaves *

Day of Birth Leave: one day on the day of birth of child. With written application
up to a maximum of 10 days without pay.
To be charged against accumulated sick leave.
Adoptive Leave: one parent to a maximum of 3 days without loss of pay on the
adoption of child or assuming legal guardianship depending on circumstances and
distances involved.
Short Term Leave *

Leave without pay for personal time on instructional days will be considered only
for extra-ordinary circumstances. Must be submitted no less than 14 days in
advance and cannot be attached to a school break (Winter Break, Spring break
and begin/end of school year). Requests from 12 month staff will be considered if
submitted no less than 14 days in advance and if allowable based on the needs of
the operations of the school district so that services to schools, students and staff
are maintained year-round.
Requests also require a Leave Without Pay Request
Form.
May be changed to Family Without Pay (FWOP) or Granted
Without Pay (GWOP) after being considered by Leave
Without Pay Committee.
The district will allow regular support staff to request up to 3 (three) “personal days
without pay” (PWOP) per school year that will not be subject to the LWOP protocol
but will require advance notice and approval by the Director of HR. Such “personal
days without pay” can be taken consecutively but cannot be attached to a school
break (as above). Carryover of “not taken” PWOP will not be allowed.

To be taken at a time most convenient to the operation of the school district.
Regular employees who are not required to work the days
when schools are closed during Christmas, spring and
summer break (10/11 mo. employees) have their vacation
credits applied during these breaks and not during
instructional time. They can request to have vacation credits
applied to non-instructional days by contacting the AMS
helpdesk.
Banked Time

Banked time must be pre-approved by the supervisor.
For 10/11 month employees – must be used within the start
and end date of an appointment within the school year at the
same location it was earned.
Every 8 hours banked needs to be scheduled on an approved attendance form
prior to any additional banked time being accrued.
For 12 month employees – must be used within the calendar
year at the same location it was earned.

Leave without pay granted pursuant to the Employment Standards Act AND for the
remainder of the school year or calendar year will be granted.
Employees must submit a written notice of their intention to
return to work at least six (6) weeks prior to the date they
wish to return (November 15th or June 15th).
Employees with 3 or more years of service may be granted up to 24 months leave
without pay which will expire on June 30th in any year.
Employees must provide written application by March 15.
Employees must also submit a written notice of their
intention to return to work by March 15 of the year they
intend to return.
Must have minimum 3 years of service. Must be for good and sufficient cause.
Maximum length is 2 years.
Needs to be submitted in writing to Director of HR no later
than March 15 in the calendar year in which the leave is to
commence.
Returning employees will be given employment and, where possible, in a position
equivalent to the one held prior to commencement of leave.
