The ceremony was held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, who appointed Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi to represent him at the event. Students who completed their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees were honoured in the presence of government officials, parliamentarians, family members and friends. Sixty-three graduates received degrees in medicine, 114 in nursing, 16 were conferred with Masters from both nursing and medicine while nine completed their Masters from RCSI Institute of Leadership. n Prof Murphy honours graduates Degrees were presented by RCSIMUB interim president Professor Sameer Otoom, while National University of Ireland (NUI) degrees were presented by chancellor Dr Maurice Manning. Two Bahraini students were among the winners of four new inaugural prizes at this year’s conferring ceremony. The James Finucane Prize in Medicine was won by Ameer Adnan Al Arrayed while the Rufaida Al Aslamia Prize in Nursing was won by Zainab Aqeel Maki Mohamed Humood. Ms Humood was nominated by senior clinical staff for consistently excelling in the delivery of nursing care to patients. “It is the culmination of many years of hard work, singular focus and utmost dedication,” said Professor Otoom. “These graduates have overcome many difficulties and challenges. “Therefore, you all are worthy of our admiration and congratulations.” RCSI-MUB is a constituent university of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. “I am confident that those graduating here in RCSI Bahrain will be worthy ambassadors for NUI degrees in future,” said Dr Manning, who attended the graduation for the first time. LuLu to celebrate 115th Philippines Independence Day LULU Hypermarket will celebrate the 115th Philippines Independence Day from tomorrow until Saturday at its branches in A’ali, Riffa, Hidd and Sanabis. The celebration, which will focus on the Filipino way of life, aims to shed light on the country’s culture, colour, sport and food. Philippines Ambassador Sahid Glang and Philippines consul general Raquel Solano will be present at the launch of the celebration at Ramli Mall at 6.30pm tomorrow. It will be followed by a cultural presentation by the community and Filipino staff of LuLu Hypermarket. The celebrations will feature favourite Filipino pastimes such as darts and table tennis tournament, a children’s art competition and a singing contest for children, all of which will take place at Ramli Mall. Filipino cuisine will also be highlighted at the hypermarket’s hot foods section. Man cleared of arson charge A SAUDI has been cleared of arson after judges learned that he was arrested an hour after tyres were burnt. The 24-year-old was acquitted of arson and taking part in an illegal gathering in Muharraq by the High Criminal Court yesterday. He was accused of being among a group of masked men who burned tyres near a petrol station on January 17. “It is not possible that the defendant will set the tyres on fire and then wait there for an hour until the police arrest him,” said the court verdict. The defendant had pleaded not guilty and said he was simply in the area to get his car fixed, although police said he tried to escape arrest. Jailed for theft TWO Bangladeshis have been jailed for three years for credit card theft. One of them stole it from his Indian roommate and gave it to his friend, who withdrew BD110.
