Page 1 Incident Reports At our May meeting, at the end of the meeting, a very lively discussion developed around the issue of safety at the fields. This conversation started as a comment on the photo of Jon’s landing his plane in the tailgate of my car. We actually have three issues here: 1. Safety at the field for flyers and spectators. 2. The issue of needlessly wrecked airplanes that were built over hours and hours of time—we do become attached to our aircraft…! 3. What can be done to prevent most mishaps and crashes. I’ve decided to do an “Incident Report” on my last two crashes—both of these had to do with fuel related issues. One was due to catastrophic mechanical failure and the other was due to pilot error on the ground. Both of them could have been prevented. Pre-Flight Check “In flying, I have learned that carelessness and over-Confidence are usually for more dangerous than deliberately accepted risks. Wilbur Wright !!!Before Every Flight!!! In the above picture, Dave is checking out this plane before flying. This simple step eliminates all on the ground pilot error: I completely rebuilt my Tiger 2 with Paul’s help, and Replaced everything, but didn’t even look at the fuel tank. I just put it back into the plane, but the Rubber stopper had deteriorated over 14years of nonuse. A minor oversight—catastrophic results. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Sufficient volts to fly. Full fuel tank. Transmitter matched to plane. All control surfaces in working order. All control surfaces in the correct direction. Throttle functioning correctly. Really, Really Dumb..! Just as I was getting ready to Take the “Slow & Low” up again, Dana brought in the pizza. I was just About to refuel the plane, and I got Up for pizza. I came back, and I forgot To check the fuel levels. The result is to the left. Ron told me that the plane Was a tough old bird, so, I renamed The plane to “Tough Ol’ Bird” The Talespinner June 2013 Page 2 PILOTS_TO_CO-PIL0TS JIM HODGES PRESIDENT The PresidenT has gone fishing…..! June 23 Pond Fly The Talespinner June 2013 Page 3 A little bit about Allan Bougher, The Baugher family And the creation of Baugher Field I have always been fascinated about the stories of immigrant families in America, especially when these stories span generations of a family in the same business. I come from a large Irish Catholic family with 10 aunts and uncles on one side of the family and 11 on the other. One of my uncles was a priest, and the family get-togethers were often held either in the church rectory or church hall. I can vividly remember the stories of the arrival from Ireland, the struggles, failures and successes, especially the stories of the Honorary Member Allan Bougher and his Wife Marjorie First World War, the 20’s, the Depression and the Second World War. Allan Bougher’s great-grandfather immigrated to the United States after the Civil War and settled in Pennsylvania. By the beginning of the 20th Century, 1/3 of all newspapers were printed in German, so great were the waves of German immigration. Two months ago, I met with Allan and his wife Marjorie at the business office of their enterprises. Mr. Bougher is a third generation farmer, of a farm that is now in its fourth generation since his son Dwight took over the operations of the farm. His great-grandfather immigrated to the United States from Germany in the 19th century and settled in Jefferson, Pennsylvania, where he practiced the trade of a leather-hide tanner. His son, Myers, fell in love with a woman from Taneytown, and he married her and moved there. (Oh, what we do for love…!) In 1900, he bought 60 acres of land called the “Home Farm” and began a new life as a farmer. When his grandfather passed away, his son, Allen’s dad, bought the farm from the family for the incredible sum of $6,000.00. The total size of the farm property now is 730 acres, with an additional 90 acres which are rented. The Valley Farm that we fly out of is around a 100 acres of land. Allen was born in 1935, and by age six, he knew that he wanted to be a farmer. He told me a delightful story among many that he told me. When he was six, his father hitched his small wagon behind the farm tractor, and that was when he knew that he wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps. He began working on the farm full-time in 1953. He married Marjorie in 1961, and they have five children, four of whom work, manage and direct the farm and the Baugher Enterprises, which was formed in 1964 under Marjorie’s guidance. The restaurant that we all enjoy was opened in 1947. Mrs. Baugher’s delicious pies sold then for 25 cents! (As I am writing this, I am enjoy the delicious rhubarb & strawberry pie. It cost more than 25 cents!) Wendell recounted to me the story as to how Baugher Field came to be. At that time, Wendell was the President of the club, and Allan’s son, Dwight, also was a member. Several of the club members went on a trip to The Talespinner June 2013 Page 4 one of the big annual swap/flea market events in 1994—Wendell thinks that it was the one in Lebanon. Dwight, who was around 20 at the time, was on this trip, and somehow the discussion came around to the club would sure like to have a pond to fly off of, and Dwight invited them to try flying off of the pond on the Home Farm. So, a bunch of guys, including Wendell took Dwight up on his offer, and they went to fly off of the pond. Later in the day, Allan showed up with some iced tea and snacks, and everyone got to talking. At that time the club had just moved from the field off of John Owings to Speigel, but the relationship with the county was rocky. The conversation came around to this issue with the county and the risk that the club might lose Allan by his tractor—where else would he be..! its field. Allan offered to the club the use of his land for a field. The next week, Wendell gave him a call to ask him if the offer were a serious offer, to which he replied, “When I say something, I mean what I say!” (Don’t we wish we had politicians with the same value in their word…!) So, Milt and Wendell got together with Allan and looked at several possible sites, and the present field was selected. Milt at that time was very informed in the issues of private land use and AMA insurance requirements for sanctioning by the AMA. Allan’s only requirement was that the club kept the field mowed and the area around the pond. We are very, very fortunate to have such a good friend and supporter of the club. Because of his offer, we have two beautiful flying sites. In the middle of our conversation that day, as Marjorie and I were talking, Allan took out his harmonica and began to play a tune–then I realized that he was playing “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”. I was very touched by his musical serenade. I could have listened to Marjorie and Allan for hours. I felt as if I were in my early teens listening again to the family stories around the dinner table of struggles, hardship, hard work, family pride, successes and joy. Here is Dwight managing the farm. With the responsibilities of a large farm enterprise and three children, Dwight doesn’t have time now for flying as he once did...maybe sometime in the future, he will be flying with us once again…!
