Office Hours: M, T, W, Th.: 1-2 pm.
GRADE BREAKDOWN:
60%: 4 Tests (15% each) They will not be cumulative. The later tests, however, will
include sight passages so be forewarned.
24%: Class Participation: This includes regular attendance, preparation and sight
reading. Roughly, here is how it will work. Each day you are there and prepared
you will recieve 2 pts. If you are poorly prepared you will lose a point. If you are
unprepared or absent, you will recieve none. Count on being called on at least
once per day. There are 57 days of class (not counting exams) so you can see
exactly how much wiggle room you have before your grade suffers.
16%: 8 Vocab Quizzes (2% each) These cannot be made up without prior arrangements,
but can be taken early. Plan ahead if you think you will be absent.
TEXTS:
Benner, A Selections from Homer’s Iliad
Owen and Goodspeed, Homeric Vocabularies
Lattimore, R., trans. Iliad
CLASSICS DEPT. WEBSITE
http://www.classics.web.arizona.edu/ ACADEMIC HONOR CODE:
Cheating is not remotely allowed. For me, cheating includes anything deceptive in the
context of the class, including pretending you did work when you did not. The general
rule is that if a ten year old thinks it is cheating, it probably is. Don’t do anything that
would be considered morally sketchy by anyone. If you are unsure, ask.
Consult U of A’s code of academic integrity Code of Academic Integrity: http://dos.web.arizona.edu/uapolicies/cai1.html for any questions. Don’t cheat.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Naturally I expect you all to be there and to be prepared each day and will be counting
your absences. If you miss classes for any reason, excused or unexcused, the burden is
upon YOU to make up the work.
OTHER POLICIES
All holidays or special events observed by organized religions will be honored for those students who show affiliation with that particular religion (UA Calendar of Religious Holidays <http://www.registrar.arizona.edu/religiousholidays/calendar.htm> ). Absences pre-‐approved by the UA Dean of Students (or Dean's designee) will be honored. In class, please always be respectful of others (for the UA policies regarding threatening behavior by students, click here <http://policy.web.arizona.edu/%7Epolicy/threatening.pdf> ) and practice common courtesy, e.g. turn cell phones, laptops, and other electronic devices off, do not come to class late or leave early, do not read the Arizona Daily Wildcat or any other publication during class, etc. Students with disabilities should contact the UA Disability Resource Center (621-‐3268: http://drc.arizona.edu) for any special needs or accommodations.
*The information contained in this syllabus, other than the grade and absence policies, may be subject to change with reasonable advance notice, as deemed appropriate by the instructor.
THE BIG PICTURE
This semester we are going to read Iliad Books 1, 22 and a significant portion of 24 in
Greek. We will also be reading the entire poem in English. In addition to our normal
readings, however, you will see that there will be more and more class time spent on
sight-reading. During this time there will be no assignment for you to prepare. Instead,
you will merely show up and be prepared to think on your feet. It will seem like toughlove at first, but as we go on I expect your confidence will grow. Trust me.
This syllabus is subject to change- and very likely will do so at some point. Heads up!
Each assignment is due on the day listed.
ALSO... I am trying to set up a marathon reading of the Iliad (in English!) sometime in
the late spring. I hope you will all be interested in participating and will certainly give
extra credit if you should do so. We'll talk about this later.
